International Symposium: The Gospel of John and the Early Development of Jewish – Christian Relations

On 16–18 September 2024, an international group of scholars from the fields of New Testament, ancient Christianity, and Jewish studies will gather to explore the role of John’s Gospel in the entangled development of Judaism and Christianity in the first seven centuries CE. The aim is to engage, critique, and move beyond flat and linear—yet still eminently influential—scholarly narratives that have viewed John mainly as a tool in the polemical toolbox of early Christian anti-Judaism. While not in the slightest dismissing or overlooking that role, the intellectual aim of the symposium is to explore the various creative and generative roles that John played as a resource in the broader development of Jewish and Christian identities—and their interactions—from the time of John itself to the composition of the Babylonian Talmud.

All members of the CTR are welcome to attend! Since there will be limited seating, please contact Wally Cirafesi (wally.cirafesi@ctr.lu.se) if you would like to join. Details concerning time and location will come at the start of the Fall semester.
