Course 10 credits • TRVN01
TRVN01. Monastic life with its roots in the ascetic currents of Late Antiquity had a major influence on the spread and development of Christianity. Asceticism is also found in early Judaism and Islam. An in-depth study of ascetic and monastic traditions is critical to the understanding of the roots of our European religions. The course work involves home study of general course literature, seminars to discuss these readings, a focused study of specific original texts which are presented in a seminar as well as an essay. Instruction is provided partially over the internet and partially during intensive seminars. Participation in the course forum on the internet is a requirement, as well as the submission of an essay.
