Efficient solution of the self-consistent field theory for block copolymer fluids displaying Schulz-Flory polydispersity

We develop a new formulation of polymer self-consistent field theory for polydisperse copolymer fluids satisfying the Schulz-Flory distribution. The result we obtain is remarkably simple and quickly solved numerically. The computational effort scales inversely with the width of the Schulz-Flory distribution. This suggests a significant saving in computational effort when compared with existing app

Stable isotopes as an indicator of diet in omnivorous crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus): the influence of tissue, sample treatment, and season

Stable isotopes have been used to analyse food webs and (or) trace movements of animals for about 30 years. There has been some debate on the use of different tissues and treatments before isotope analysis, as well as on seasonal effects. We found different crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) tissues (muscle, hepatopancreas, exoskeleton, gill, and whole body) to have different isotope values. Lipi

Brood parasitic European starlings do not lay high-quality eggs

Chicks of obligate brood parasites employ a variety of morphological and behavioral strategies to outcompete nest mates. Elevated competitiveness is favored by natural selection because parasitic chicks are not related to their host parents or nest mates. When chicks of conspecific brood parasites (CBPs) are unrelated to their hosts, they and their parents would also benefit from traits that enhan

RNA splicing mediated by YB-1 is inhibited by TLS/CHOP in human myxoid liposarcoma cells

Human myxoid liposarcoma contains a characteristic t(12;16) chromosomal translocation that results in fusion of the N-terminal domain of the translocated in liposarcoma (TLS) protein to the C/EBP homologous protein (CHOP). TLS possesses structural motifs that suggest it may participate in RNA processing. We demonstrate that in human myxoid liposarcoma cells, wild-type TLS binds to RNA polymerase I

Palaeomagnetism of 935 Ma mafic dykes in southern Sweden and implications for the Sveconorwegian Loop

New palaeomagnetic results for the 935 Ma Goteborg-Slussen mafic dykes in southern Sweden provide a well-dated high-quality palaeomagnetic pole for Early Neoproterozoic Baltica. New U-Pb geochronological data for several palaeomagnetically studied mafic intrusions yield three additional well-dated palaeopoles and one virtual geomagnetic pole. This set of dated poles suggests minimal drift of Balti

Maternal use of selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors in early pregnancy and infant congenital malformations.

BACKGROUND: Maternal use of selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs) has recently been associated with an increased risk for certain malformations. METHODS: Using the Swedish Medical Birth Register, we identified women who had reported the use of SSRIs in early pregnancy and studied their infants, born between July 1, 1995 and the end of 2004. Congenital malformations were identified from

Multifunctional biomass production systems - an overview with presentation of specific applications in India and Sweden

This perspective discusses multi-functional biomass production systems, which are located, designed, integrated and managed so as to provide specific environmental services, in addition to biomass supply. Besides discussing the general concept and outlining a range of different possible applications, we present in somewhat more detail specific applications of such systems for the cases of Sweden a

Entrapping of tyrosinase in a system of reverse micelles

The enzymatic activity of tyrosinase was studied both in aqueous and organic media. In the latter case tyrosinase was entrapped in a system of reverse micelles of Aerosol OT in octane. At hydration degree 25, when the inner cavity of the reverse micelles was comparable with the size of a tetrameric tyrosinase form known for aqueous solutions, an optimum level of catalytic activity was observed. An

Spontaneous epileptic rats show changes in sleep architecture and hypothalamic pathology

Purpose: The goal of the present study was to investigate the relationship between sleep, hypothalamic pathology, and seizures in spontaneous epileptic rats. Methods: Rats were implanted with radiotelemetry transmitters for measuring electrocorticogram (ECoG) and stimulation electrodes in the hippocampus. Epileptogenesis was triggered by 2 h of electical stimulation-induced self-sustained status e

Development and application of an analytical protocol for evaluation of treatment processes for landfill leachates. I. Development of an analytical protocol for handling organic compounds in complex leachate samples

A strategy is presented for evaluation of treatment procedures for landfill leachate with emphasis on organic pollutants. An analytical scheme, the LAQUA protocol, was developed as a guide for the analytical work. The protocol includes organic as well as metals,. inorganic ions, water-quality parameters, and toxicity. The proposed strategy considers the behaviour of both polar and non-polar organi

Association between protein tyrosine phosphatase 22 variant R620W in conjunction with the HLA-DRB1 shared epitope and humoral autoimmunity to an immunodominant epitope of cartilage-specific type II collagen in early rheumatoid arthritis

Objective. To analyze the genetic impact of allelic variants of the protein tyrosine phosphatase N22 (PTPN22) and HLA-DRB1 alleles on IgG autoantibody formation directed toward an immunodominant conformational epitope (C1(III); amino acid residues 359-369) of type 11 collagen (CII) in early rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Methods. Sera obtained at study inclusion from an inception cohort of RA patients

Cognition and adaptive skills in myotonic dystrophy type 1: a study of 55 individuals with congenital and childhood forms

Aims To investigate cognitive abilities and adaptive skills in children and adolescents with myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) and correlate the findings to the cytosine-thymine-guanine (CTG) repeat expansion size. Method Cognitive level was assessed in 55 children and adolescents with DM1 (31 males, 24 females; mean age 12y 1mo, SD 5y 1mo; range 2y 7mo-21y 5mo) divided into the following categories

Mycelial uptake, translocation and assimilation of N-15-labeled nitrogen by ectomycorrhizal Pinus sylvestris plants

Mycolial uptake, translocation and assimilation of 15N-labelled ammonium was followed in Pinus sylvestris plants infected with the ectomycorrhizal fungus. Paxillus involutus. The distribution of labelled compounds within the systems was examined using gas chromatography / mass spectrometry. Labelled nitrogen was incorporated into a range of free amino acids in the fungal mycelium, the principal si

Cell replacement therapy in human neurodegenerative disorders

Clinical studies with intrastriatal transplants of embryonic mesencephalic tissue in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) provide proof-of-principle for the cell replacement strategy in the diseased human brain. The grafted dopaminergic neurons can reinnervate the denervated striatum, restore regulated dopamine release and movement-related frontal cortical activation, and give rise to significan

Adherence with advice and prescriptions in SLE is mostly good, but better follow up is needed: A study with a questionnaire.

The objective was to evaluate the efficacy of the information policy given to all systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients. One hundred consecutive SLE patients were asked to answer anonymously a questionnaire covering demographic issues including education, adherence with prescriptions and advice given and methods of sourcing information. Seventy-three females and ten males responded. The demo

A novel von Willebrand factor binding protein expressed by Staphylococcus aureus

When a shotgun phage-display library of Staphylococcus aureus Newman was affinity selected (panned) against recombinant von Willebrand factor (vWf), a novel von Willebrand factor binding protein (vWbp) was found. Experimental data indicate that the interaction between vWbp and vWf is very specific and mediated by a region of 26 aa residues in the C-terminal part of vWbp. vWbp has an N-terminal sec

Interpretation of captopril renography using artificial neural networks.

The purpose of this study was to develop a method based on artificial neural networks for interpretation of captopril renography tests for the detection of renovascular hypertension caused by renal artery stenosis and to assess the value of different measurements from the test. A total of 250 99mTc-MAG3 captopril renography tests were used in the study. The material was collected from two differen

Complex telomere-associated repeat units in members of the genus Chironomus evolve from sequences similar to simple telomeric repeats

The dipteran Chironomus tentans has complex tandemly repeated 350-bp DNA sequences at or near the chromosome ends. As in Drosophila melanogaster, short simple repeats with cytosines and guanines in different strands have never been observed. We were therefore interested in learning whether the Chironomus repeats could have evolved from simple sequence telomeric DNA, which might suggest that they c
