The origin of Fe II and [Fe II] emission lines in the 4,000-10,000 Å range in the BD Weigelt Blobs of Eta Carinae

We present numerical simulations that reproduce the salient features of the amazingly strong [Fe ii andFe ii emission spectra in the B and D Weigelt blobs of Carinae. For our studies we have used spectraobtained during the 1998 epoch observations with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The spectrum of the Band D Weigelt blobs dominates in [Fe ii and Fe ii emission lines. The same observations show

Excess mortality after hospitalisation for vertebral fracture

An excess mortality is well described after vertebral fracture. Deaths are in part related to co-morbidity, but could also be due to the fracture event itself, either directly or indirectly. The aim of this study was to examine the quantum and pattern of mortality following vertebral fracture. We identified 16,051 men and women aged 50 years or more with a vertebral fracture that required hospital

The role of the meniscus in osteoarthritis genesis.

The history of treating meniscal lesions has been characterized by firm belief in "radical" surgery, with serious long-term consequences for the individual and society. The menisci play a critical protective role for the knee joint through shock absorption and load distribution. Currently, the consensus in surgical treatment of meniscal tears is to preserve as much functional meniscal tissue as po

Biological monitoring of methylhexahydrophthalic anhydride by determination of methylhexahydrophthalic acid in urine and plasma from exposed workers

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether methylhexahydrophthalic acid (MHHP acid) in urine and plasma can be used as a biomarker for exposure to methylhexahydrophthalic anhydride (MHHPA). METHODS: MHHPA in air was sampled by Amberlite XAD-2 and analysed by gas chromatography (GC) with flame ionisation detection. MHHP acid in urine and plasma was analysed by GC with mass spectrometric detection. Workers o

Recursive construction for a class of radial functions. II. Superspace

We extend the recursion formula for matrix Bessel functions, which we obtained previously, to superspace. It is sufficient to do this for the unitary orthosymplectic supergroup. By direct computations, we show that fairly explicit results can be obtained, at least up to dimension 8x8 for the supermatrices. Since we introduce a new technique, we discuss various of its aspects in some detail. (C) 20

Role of membrane-bound thiol-disulfide oxidoreductases in endospore-forming bacteria

Thiol-disulfide oxidoreductases catalyze formation, disruption, or isomerization of disulfide bonds between cysteine residues in proteins. Much is known about the functional roles and properties of this class of redox enzymes in vegetative bacterial cells but their involvement in sporulation has remained unknown until recently. Two membrane-embedded thiol-disulfide oxidoreductases, CcdA and StoA/S

Immunolocalization of the saposin-like insert of plant aspartic proteinases exhibiting saposin C activity. Expression in young flower tissues and in barley seeds

The plant- specific insert ( PSI) of cypro11 gene- encoding cyprosin, an aspartic proteinase from Cynara cardunculus, has been cloned by polymerase chain reaction ( PCR) into a bacterial expression vector. A rearranged form of this PSI in which the N- and C- terminal sequences were permutated to make it more similar to the structural arrangement observed in saposins was also cloned and expressed i

Local recurrence of deep-seated, high-grade, soft tissue sarcoma: 459 patients from the Scandinavian Sarcoma Group Register

This study was based on 459 adult patients with deep, high-grade, soft tissue sarcoma of extremities or trunk wall reported to the Scandinavian Sarcoma Group Register (1986-1993). All patients had their definitive surgery for primary tumor at a sarcoma center. The median follow-up was 7.5 (3-12) years. 204 patients are still alive. 68 patients had amputations and 391 underwent limb-sparing surgery

A gene conferring susceptibility to type 2 diabetes in conjunction with obesity is located on chromosome 18p11

Genome-wide nonparametric linkage analysis of 480 sib-pairs affected with type 2 diabetes revealed linkage to a previously unreported susceptibility locus on chromosome 18p11. This result improved with stringent subphenotyping using age- and sex-adjusted BMI, ultimately reaching a logarithm of odds of 3.82 (allele sharing 0.6654) at a point between markers D18S976 and D18S391 when the most obese 2

First report of Amoebophrya sp parasites infecting dinoflagellates from Brazilian coastal waters

Members of the parasitic dinoflagellate genus Amoebophrya lethally infect other marine dinoflagellates, including red tide forming and toxin-producing species. The known geographical distribution of Amoebophrya sp. parasites in costal waters of the northern hemisphere is more likely reflecting a lack of information from other areas rather than the actual picture. We investigated the presence of Am

Valence band ARPES study of La1-xSrxMnO3 single crystals

We have observed a feature at similar to2.5 eV binding energy (BE) in the valence band of La1-xSrxMnO3 single crystals not previously reported in the literature. The relative intensity of this feature decreases with increasing Sr concentration x and has a strong photon energy dependence. It also exhibits a complicated angle dependence. In this report we present a full set of angular-resolved photo
