Valorization of Brewer's spent grain to prebiotic oligosaccharide : Production, xylanase catalyzed hydrolysis, in-vitro evaluation with probiotic strains and in a batch human fecal fermentation model

Brewer's spent grain (BSG) accounts for around 85% of the solid by-products from beer production. BSG was first extracted to obtain water-soluble arabinoxylan (AX). Using subsequent alkali extraction (0.5 M KOH) it was possible to dissolve additional AX. In total, about 57% of the AX in BSG was extracted with the purity of 45–55%. After comparison of nine xylanases, Pentopan mono BG, a GH11 enzyme

Genetic variation in the C-type lectin receptor CLEC4M in type 1 von Willebrand Disease patients

von Willebrand factor (VWF) levels in healthy individuals and in patients with type 1 von Willebrand disease (VWD) are influenced by genetic variation in several genes, e.g. VWF, ABO, STXBP5 and CLEC4M. This study aims to screen comprehensively for CLEC4M variants and investigate their association with type 1 VWD in the Swedish population. In order to screen for CLEC4M variants, the CLEC4M gene re

Yellowstone Lake Coring Projects : Research with a History

The Yellowstone National Park ecosystem is a product of dynamic earth system processes, which have been of interest to scientists and the public since the park's discovery. Here, we outline the history of two successive generations of scientific collaboration in Yellowstone National Park. Early collaboration was spurred by the discovery of an unknown diatom species found in Yellowstone Lake. This

Towards physiologically meaningful water-use efficiency estimates from eddy covariance data

Intrinsic water-use efficiency (iWUE) characterizes the physiological control on the simultaneous exchange of water and carbon dioxide in terrestrial ecosystems. Knowledge of iWUE is commonly gained from leaf-level gas exchange measurements, which are inevitably restricted in their spatial and temporal coverage. Flux measurements based on the eddy covariance (EC) technique can overcome these limit

Making the sustainable more sustainable : public transport and the collaborative spaces of policy translation

This paper investigates where and how sustainable transport goals are translated into public transport planning and operations. The case where this is explored is the Regional Public Transport Authority (RPTA) in Stockholm, Sweden. By drawing upon recent discussions on policy translation and political–administrative relationships, sustainable transport is found to be translated in two different co

Acoustic Streaming and Its Suppression in Inhomogeneous Fluids

We present a theoretical and experimental study of boundary-driven acoustic streaming in an inhomogeneous fluid with variations in density and compressibility. In a homogeneous fluid this streaming results from dissipation in the boundary layers (Rayleigh streaming). We show that in an inhomogeneous fluid, an additional nondissipative force density acts on the fluid to stabilize particular inhomog

The role of relationships in start-up development

Relationships are important in the business start-up phase for a variety of reasons. Internal relationships can support knowledge exchange that determines the business model development and external relationships can facilitate a wide range of opportunities, support and insights. The paper explains the key relationships experienced by the founding team of a recently formed Swedish digital trading

From climate skeptic to climate cynic

Whilst we know quite a bit about organized forms of climate skepticism, very few studies focus on how disorganized climate skeptics seek an underdog position to speak truth to power. Hence, we investigate frank speech as updated ancient forms of truth-telling ‘parrhesia’, in two Swedish empirical sources that strongly question the climate change consensus. The first is a digital space for free spe

Quasifree (p, 2p) Reactions on Oxygen Isotopes : Observation of Isospin Independence of the Reduced Single-Particle Strength

Quasifree one-proton knockout reactions have been employed in inverse kinematics for a systematic study of the structure of stable and exotic oxygen isotopes at the R3B/LAND setup with incident beam energies in the range of 300-450 MeV/u. The oxygen isotopic chain offers a large variation of separation energies that allows for a quantitative understanding of single-particle strength with changing

Healing Brazil's Blue Amazon : The role of knowledge networks in nurturing cross-scale transformations at the frontlines of ocean sustainability

HIGHLIGHTS • The Anthropocene compels unlocking of ocean-related network capabilities. • Orchestration of local, regional, and global knowledge networks can augment transformative capacity. • Transdisciplinary network diagnostics are promising social learning tools. • Strategic advice for transformational research in ocean territories are provided. This paper dedicates to understanding of what is

Uncertainty after heart transplantation. A new perspective on self-efficacy and self-management.

Background Self-management is the main concept constituting the foundation of follow-up care after heart transplantation. Self-efficacy is a foundation of self-management. Little is known about heart recipients’ experiences in relation to self-efficacy and self-management after heart transplantation. Aim The overall aim of this thesis was to explore uncertainty and self-efficacy as important aspecBackground Self-management is the main concept constituting the foundation of follow-up care after heart transplantation. Projects in Automatic Control 2017

This report contains the student papers describing the projects in the 2017 course Projects in Automatic Control (FRTN40). The course is given annually by the Department of Automatic Control, Lund University, during the second half of the fall semester, with the possibility of projects starting at other times upon agreement. It is an advanced level course, giving 7.5 ECTS credits. The main purpose

Structural health monitoring of concrete structures using diffuse waves

The work presented in this thesis has aimed to investigate and implement techniques for ultrasonic measurements in structural health monitoring applications for civil structures. The focus of the work has been to make these systems practical in real applications, where the large size of the structures, and the changing environments they are exposed to, pose problems for many methods which otherwis

Time-frequency representation of autoionization dynamics in helium

Autoionization, which results from the interference between direct photoionization and photoexcitation to a discrete state decaying to the continuum by configuration interaction, is a well known example of the important role of electron correlation in light-matter interaction. Information on this process can be obtained by studying the spectral, or equivalently, temporal complex amplitude of the i

Identification of 12 new susceptibility loci for different histotypes of epithelial ovarian cancer

To identify common alleles associated with different histotypes of epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC), we pooled data from multiple genome-wide genotyping projects totaling 25,509 EOC cases and 40,941 controls. We identified nine new susceptibility loci for different EOC histotypes: six for serous EOC histotypes (3q28, 4q32.3, 8q21.11, 10q24.33, 18q11.2 and 22q12.1), two for mucinous EOC (3q22.3 and

Hypothalamic alterations in neurodegenerative diseases and their relation to abnormal energy metabolism

Neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs) are disorders characterized by progressive deterioration of brain structure and function. Selective neuronal populations are affected leading to symptoms which are prominently motor in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or Huntington’s disease (HD), or cognitive in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Besides the common existence of neurona
