Analysis of Extracellular Vesicle-Associated Proteoglycans

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) have emerged as a central mechanism of intercellular communication in physiology and disease. EVs participate in paracrine exchange of nucleic acids as well as lipids, proteins, and glycans to elicit a complex biological response in target cells. Proteoglycans (PGs) are widely expressed in EV-producing cells and are sorted to the membrane of secreted EVs to participate

Adaptive Water Management : On the Need for Using the Post-WWII Science in Water Governance

Although the UN concluded, already in 1997, that water would be the most contentious issue of the 21st century, water governance is still confused, nearly everywhere. Even the severe impacts of escalating water bankruptcy and global warming have so far failed to incur a marked improvement in governance systems. The global community has adopted sustainable development as a common vision and guide f

Visual Tracking and Control of a Quadrocopter

The main goal of this master thesis project was to take a manually controlled consumer quality quadrocopter and build the foundations which allows it to be autonomously controlled. This was achieved by introducing a exterior frame of reference through the use of a webcam coupled with image analysis algorithms. The position and rotation of the quadrocopter was identified, and several control struct

Neither Fish, Nor Fowl : A New Way to a Fuller Understanding of the lex specialis Principle

International lawyers ascribe to the lex specialis principle three distinctly different meanings. Thus, lex specialis is referred to, first, as a norm designed to resolve conflicts between entire categories of norms; secondly, as a norm designed to resolve conflicts on a case-by-case basis; and, thirdly, as a rule of interpretation designed to avoid the occurrence of normative conflicts, rather th

Decreasing the Adverse Effects in Pelvic Radiation Therapy : A Randomized Controlled Trial Evaluating the Use of Probiotics

Purpose: The aim of this randomized controlled trial was to evaluate the potential benefit from 2 probiotic bacteria of the species Lactiplantibacillus plantarum against radiation therapy–induced comorbidities. Methods and Materials: Women (>18 years of age) scheduled for radiation therapy because of gynecologic cancer were randomly allocated to consume placebo or either low-dose probiotics (1 × 1

Numerical Investigation on Flow and Cooling Characteristics of a Micro-Ribbed Vane Endwall

The secondary flow originated from the inherent pressure gradient inside the vane cascade has a strong impact on the endwall cooling performance as the crossflow sweeps the upstream coolant jet towards the suction side, resulting in intensifying thermal load near the pressure side endwall. Hence a novel ribbed-endwall is introduced to suppress passage crossflow. The effects of the mass flow ratio

Analysis: Why not everyone will benefit equally from a transition to a low-carbon economy

Although the 2023 Budget set the stage to finance a renewable-energy transition, ensuring that energy can be used as a tool to deliver environmental and socioeconomic well-being across all brackets of society requires multilevelgovernance and diverse actor networks. Some levers that all stakeholders – including investors – can use to embed justice in the financial architecture of renewable-energy

Planning for human diversity : design patterns of Universal Design

Ensuring the conditions for an inclusive society in the face of humandiversity places various demands on the built environment. Planning isessential for accommodating a wide range of individual preferences andabilities. This article examines the presence and absence of Universal Design (UD)in contemporary urban planning and construction in eight new or remodelledSwedish building and public space pr

Massive open online courses in chemistry : A comparative overview of platforms and features

Open-access, online educational platforms launched in the last decade are receiving growing attention from both academia and the general public. A special class of such courseware known as MOOCs (massive open online courses) allows enrollment of up to hundreds of thousands of students from all over the world. This report reviews and compares currently available chemistry MOOCs as well as other Web

Lower Bounds for Monotone q-Multilinear Boolean Circuits

A monotone Boolean circuit is composed of OR gates, AND gates and input gates corresponding to the input variables and the Boolean constants. It is multilinear if for any AND gate the two input functions have no variable in common. We consider a generalization of monotone multilinear Boolean circuits to include monotone q-multilinear Boolean circuits. Roughly, a sufficient condition for the q-mult

Numerical Simulation and Optimization of SCR-DeNOx Systems for Coal-Fired Power Plants Based on a CFD Method

In order to solve the problem of the uneven distribution of the flow and ammonia concentration field in the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) denitrification system of a 660 MW coal-fired power plant, a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was established at a scale of 1:1. The existing flow guide and ammonia fume mixing device were then calibrated and optimized. The relati

Comparison of the six-minute walk test performed over a 15 and 30 m course by children with cerebral palsy

Background: The aim of this study was to compare performance on the six-minute walk test (6MWT) performed over 15 m and 30 m courses by children and youths with cerebral palsy (CP). Methods: Children and youths with CP at Gross Motor Function Classification System levels I–IV performed the 6MWT in a straight 15 m-long corridor (first trial) and 30 m-long corridor (second trial). The intraclass cor

Assembly of shape-controlled nanocrystals by depletion attraction

Recently (Baranov et al., Nano Lett., 2010, 10, 743) we demonstrated that depletion attraction between semiconductor nanorods in solution can be employed for both their self-assembly and their separation from spherical nanoparticles. Here we show that depletion attraction can be used to fabricate binary superlattices of nanorods and 3D networks of octapod/tetrapod-shaped nanocrystals.

Surface microdialysis measures local tissue metabolism after Ivor Lewis esophagectomy; an attempt to predict anastomotic defect

Anastomotic defect (AD) after esophagectomy can lead to severe complications with need for surgical or endoscopic intervention. Early detection enables early treatment and can limit the consequences of the AD. As of today, there are limited methods to predict AD. In this study, we have used microdialysis (MD) to measure local metabolism at the intrathoracic anastomosis. Feasibility and possible di
