Local recurrence of deep-seated, high-grade, soft tissue sarcoma: 459 patients from the Scandinavian Sarcoma Group Register

This study was based on 459 adult patients with deep, high-grade, soft tissue sarcoma of extremities or trunk wall reported to the Scandinavian Sarcoma Group Register (1986-1993). All patients had their definitive surgery for primary tumor at a sarcoma center. The median follow-up was 7.5 (3-12) years. 204 patients are still alive. 68 patients had amputations and 391 underwent limb-sparing surgery

A gene conferring susceptibility to type 2 diabetes in conjunction with obesity is located on chromosome 18p11

Genome-wide nonparametric linkage analysis of 480 sib-pairs affected with type 2 diabetes revealed linkage to a previously unreported susceptibility locus on chromosome 18p11. This result improved with stringent subphenotyping using age- and sex-adjusted BMI, ultimately reaching a logarithm of odds of 3.82 (allele sharing 0.6654) at a point between markers D18S976 and D18S391 when the most obese 2

First report of Amoebophrya sp parasites infecting dinoflagellates from Brazilian coastal waters

Members of the parasitic dinoflagellate genus Amoebophrya lethally infect other marine dinoflagellates, including red tide forming and toxin-producing species. The known geographical distribution of Amoebophrya sp. parasites in costal waters of the northern hemisphere is more likely reflecting a lack of information from other areas rather than the actual picture. We investigated the presence of Am

Migration of model contaminants from PET bottles: influence of temperature, food simulant and functional barrier

To simulate post-consumer recycled plastics, selected model contaminants were incorporated into PET bottles using a time saving method. Migration into 3% acetic acid, a cola-type beverage and 95% ethanol was followed during 1 year of storage at 20 and 40degreesC. Aroma compounds previously found in post-consumer PET material were used as model contaminants. Benzaldehyde was found to migrate to the

Frequency Offset Correction for Coherent OFDM In Wireless Systems

In this paper, a new frequency offset correction approach for OFDM is proposed to track a wider range of offsets than conventional proposals, without devoting specific pilot symbols for synchronization. This can be attained since, in coherent OFDM, channel estimation is usually performed employing pilot-symbol assisted-modulation (PSAM), based on inserting known symbols in the time-frequency grid.

Evaluation of capture ELISA for detection of antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies directed against proteinase 3 in Wegener's granulomatosis: first results from a multicentre study

Objective: To evaluate the performance characteristics of direct and capture ELISA for the detection of PR3-ANCA in Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) in international ANCA reference laboratories. Methods: Serum samples were derived from patients with histological and clinical diagnosis of WG (n = 60), rheumatoid arthritis (RA) (n = 30) and healthy controls (n = 30). Each of them was tested for the pre

Tidningsmakt och politiska organisationer : den borgerliga samlingsrörelsen i Fyrstadskretsen 1962-1968

The big Malmö newpapers Sydsvenska Dagbladet and Kvällsposten, both owned by the family Wahlgren, involved themselves heavily in Swedish party politics in the 1960s. The Social Democrats had in 1962 been in almost permanent power in Sweden since 1932. There was a desperate wish for change in power among many Swedishy voters. In this atmosphere Olof Wahlgren, Sydsvenska Dagbladet´s deputy editor,

Physical attractiveness stereotype and memory

Five experiments examined explicit and implicit memory for information that is congruent with the physical attractiveness stereotype (i.e. attractive-positive and unattractive-negative) and information that is incongruent with the physical attractiveness stereotype (i.e. attractive-negative and unattractive-positive). Measures of explicit recognition-sensitivity and implicit discriminability revea

Physical activity and risk of colon and rectal cancers: The European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition

We investigated several aspects of the role of physical activity in colon and rectal cancer etiology that remain unclear in the European Prospective Investigation into Nutrition and Cancer. This cohort of 413,044 men and women had 1,094 cases of colon and 599 cases of rectal cancer diagnosed during an average of 6.4 years of follow-up. We analyzed baseline data on occupational, household, and recr

Bacterial killing by heparin-binding peptides from PRELP and thrombospondin

Antimicrobial peptides (AMP) are effector molecules of the innate immune system. A cross-functionality exists between AMPs and heparin-binding peptides. Here, we show that the peptides QPTRRPRPGTGPGRRPRPRPR-P (QPT22), derived from proline arginine-rich end leucine-rich repeat protein (PRELP) and KRFKQDGGWSHWSPWSS (KRF17) from thrombospondin exert antimicrobial activities against the Gram-negative

Improved cardiac function and quality of life following upgrade to dual chamber pacing after long-term ventricular stimulation.

Aims Many patients with sinus node disease or atrioventricular block have previously received pacemakers with only ventricular stimulation (VVI or VVIR). This study aimed to investigate whether quality of life and cardiac function were affected by an upgrade to dual chamber pacing (DDDR or DDIR) following long-term ventricular stimulation. Methods After implantation of an atrial lead and a DDDR pu

Multiscale detection of transient evoked otoacoustic emissions

This paper presents a unified approach to multiscale detection of transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs). Using statistical detection theory, it is shown that the optimal detector involves a time windowing operation where the window can be estimated from ensemble correlation information. The detector performs adaptive splitting of the signal into different frequency bands using either wav

A study of the influence of grain boundaries on short crack growth during varying load using a dislocation technique

The propagation of short cracks in the neighbourhood of grain boundaries have been investigated using a technique were the crack is modelled by distributed dislocation dipoles and the plastic deformation is represented by discrete dislocations. Discrete dislocations are emitted from the crack tip as the crack grows. Dislocations can also nucleate at the grain boundaries. The influence on crack gro

Nuclear motion and symmetry breaking of the B 1s-excited BF3 molecule

Out-of-plane nuclear motion stimulated in the core-excited state and symmetry breaking due to this nuclear motion have been investigated for B Is excitation in the BF3 molecule by a combination of three different experimental methods: angle-resolved ion-yield spectroscopy, vibrationally resolved resonant Auger electron spectroscopy and quadruple-ion coincidence momentum-imaging technique.
