Glypican-1: Structural and functional analysis of the N-glycosylated human protein

Popular Abstract in English All living things somehow communicate with each other. Cell-to-cell communication, or signalling, occurs on the molecular level, regulating the body’s activities and coordinating various cell actions and is thereby valuable for realizing cell as well as system functions. Errors in the cellular transferred information may induce diseases such as cancer and autoimmune disGlypicans are multifunctional cell surface heparan sulphate proteoglycans co-regulating numerous signalling pathways, and are thereby involved in the control of cellular division, differentiation, and morphogenesis. The heparan sulphate (HS) chains are responsible for many of those biological functions; nevertheless recent studies suggest functional roles for the glypican core proteins in mediatin

Youth at risk of marginalization – long-term effects of early labour market exclusion in Sweden

The heavy recession in Sweden during the first half of the nineties led to a very difficult situation for young people with a weak position on the labour market. Around a third of the youths born in the mid seventies had received social welfare benefits before the age of 24. Despite the recovery in the Swedish economy a group of young adults, now in their thirties, simply can not find a way to eit

Remote sensing phenology at European northern latitudes - From ground spectral towers to satellites

Popular Abstract in Swedish Växters fenologi påverkar ekosystemens funktion och tjänster, och återkopplar till klimatet genom att påverka utbytet av kol, vatten och energi mellan atmosfär och ekosystem. Under de senaste decennierna har växternas fenologi studerats i allt större omfattning, men fortfarande är osäkerheten stor och enighet saknas om klimatets inverkan på fenologi och förändringar övePlant phenology exerts major influences on carbon, water, and energy exchanges between atmosphere and ecosystems, provides feedbacks to climate, and affects ecosystem functioning and services. Great efforts have been spent in studying plant phenology over the past decades, but there are still large uncertainties and disputations in phenology estimation, trends, and its climate sensitivities. This

Experimental test of the delayed single-photon self-interference effect

A modified version of the delayed single-photon self-interference experiment is performed using a sample of Pr:Y2SiO5 for detecting the interference pattern. Instead of using a beam splitter and two spatially separated paths for the light to travel towards the material, acousto-optic modulators are used to create two light pulses and let the pulses travel along the same path towards the material.

QCD and weak interactions of light quarks

This review contains an overview of strong interaction effects in weak decays starting with a historical introduction. It contains a short overview of semileptonic decays and their relevance for measuring CKM matrix elements. The main part is devoted to the theoretical calculation on nonleptonic matrix elements relevant for K0-K0bar mixing and K to pi pi decays. It concludes with a short summary o

Correlations in multiparticle production

Different aspects of the strong interaction in particle collisions are studied. Most of the work is based on the Lund string fragmentation model for hadron production. A model which incorporates interference between identical bosons in the string model is presented. With this model the consequences for the Bose-Einstein effect are investigated in detail. What happens at the end of the QCD cascades

Imperfect Tagging Revisited

Revisiting Parsons' 1996 article about disability insurance with imperfect tagging in a two type-economy -- individuals are either able or disabled. Here Parsons' analysis is extended in several directions. The model is generalized to allow for different utility functions over work status. The analysis extends to three different cases of a two-type economy. Finally Parsons' model is extended to th

Conformational Studies of Biologically Active Peptides

In this work conformational studies have been performed on peptides from four different systems in an attempt to gain knowledge about their biological function. Circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy in combination with distance geometry and restrained molecular dynamics simulations were the methods used. A detailed conformational study of a cyclic p
