The effect of oxygen on the regioselectivity in the rhodium catalysed hydrosilylation of 1,3-dienes
The regioselectivity of the hydrosilylation of substituted 1,3-dienes catalysed by several rhodium complexes in the presence and absence of oxygen was studied. In addition to the already known accelerating effect, the presence of oxygen strongly affected the product distribution. For 2-substituted 1,3-dienes in the presence of oxygen the regioselectivity was in the range of 1 : 6 to 1 : 10 in favo
The importance of body mass index and weight-change in patients with coronary artery disease
Obesity is also an independent risk factor for coronary artery disease (CAD) and can cause structural as well as functional changes in the heart. High BMI is associated with increased mortality in the population. Weight-loss from a state of overweight or obesity may
Signals From the Embryonic Mouse Pancreas Induce Differentiation of Human Embryonic Stem Cells Into Insulin-Producing {beta}-Cell-Like Cells.
The recent success in restoring normoglycemia in type 1 diabetes by islet cell transplantation indicates that cell replacement therapy of this severe disease is achievable. However, the severe lack of donor islets has increased the demand for alternative sources of beta-cells, such as adult and embryonic stem cells. Here, we investigate the potential of human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) to differ
Rectal carcinoma: double-contrast MR imaging for preoperative staging
PURPOSE: To evaluate and compare the imaging findings and staging of rectal carcinoma by using conventional magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, MR imaging with an enema of superparamagnetic ferristene-based contrast material, and MR imaging with an enema of ferristene solution plus intravenous injection of gadodiamide. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-nine patients (17 women, 12 men; age range, 39-91 ye
Taxpayers' responsiveness to tax rate changes and implications for the cost of taxation in Sweden
Historically, labor supply elasticities have been used to evaluate tax policy and predict tax revenue effects. They are likely to underestimate taxpayers' response to tax rate changes, and hence to underestimate changes in potential tax revenues, however, because they measure only how taxpayers alter hours worked. Taxpayers can also respond to tax rate changes by altering, for instance, their work
Human fetal cortical and striatal neural stem cells generate region-specific neurons in vitro and differentiate extensively to neurons after intrastriatal transplantation in neonatal rats.
Human fetal brain is a potential source of neural stem cells (NSCs) for cell replacement therapy in neurodegenerative diseases. We explored whether NSCs isolated from cortex and striatum of human fetuses, aged 6-9 weeks post-conception, maintain their regional identity and differentiate into specific neuron types in culture and after intrastriatal transplantation in neonatal rats. We observed no d

Detection of cardiac pathology: time intervals and spectral analysis.
AIM: To develop an objective diagnostic method that facilitates detection of noncyanotic congenital heart diseases. METHODS: Heart sounds and murmurs were recorded from 60 healthy children and 173 children with noncyanotic congenital heart disease. Time intervals were measured and spectrum of the systolic murmurs analyzed. Stepwise logistic regression analysis was used to distinguish physiological

Increasing stroke incidence and decreasing case fatality, 1989-1998: a study from the stroke register in Malmö, Sweden.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Although the incidence of and mortality from myocardial infarction (MI) have declined in most industrialized countries, incidence studies of stroke have shown less consistent trends. This study examines time trends in the incidence of stroke and case fatality rates in relation to socioeconomic circumstances and history of MI.METHODS: Stroke incidence in the city of Malmö, S
Sexual behavior risk factors associated with bacterial vaginosis and Chlamydia trachomatis infection
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Few studies have demonstrated that bacterial vaginosis (BV) is associated with sexual behavior risk factors similar to those for other sexually transmitted diseases. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of these factors in a multivariate analysis of data from women infected with BV and Chlamydia trachomatis, and noninfected control subjects. GOALS:
Direct visual evidence for quinoidal charge delocalization in poly-p-phenylene cation radical
Recently, X-ray crystallographic evidence of quinoidal charge delocalization in poly-p-phenylene cation radicals was reported [Banerjee, M. et al., J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2007, 129, 8070]. In this paper, direct visual evidence for quinoidal charge delocalization in quaterphylene (QP) is shown with three-dimensional (31)) charge difference densities. It was revealed that the extra positive charge mainly

Dependence of Curie temperature on the thickness of epitaxial (Ga,Mn)As film
We present the magnetotransport properties of very thin (5-15 nm) single (Ga,Mn)As layers grown by low-temperature molecular beam epitaxy. A lower (Ga,Mn)As thickness limit of 5 nm for the ferromagnetic phase and the dependence of the Curie temperature on (Ga,Mn)As thickness are determined from electrical-transport measurements. The Curie temperature is determined to be 97 K for the thinnest ferro
A method to simultaneously determine sorption isotherms and sorption enthalpies with a double twin microcalorimeter
Sorption of vapors of water, ethanol, and other liquids on solids like pharmaceuticals, textiles and food stuffs are of both practical and theoretical importance. In this article we present a technique to simultaneously measure sorption isotherms and sorption enthalpies. The sample is contained in one end of a sorption vessel. In the other end a vaporizable liquid is introduced to start the measur
Hydrogenation of Benzene to Cyclohexene on an Unsupported Ruthenium Catalyst: Effects of Poisons
The influence of poisoning of ruthenium catalysing the selective hydrogenation of benzene to cyclohexene has been studied. Both the yield of cyclohexene and the rate of hydrogenation are greatly affected by the degree of poisoning (e.g. FeSO4, FeCl3, TiCl3 and oxygen), and may also be optimised. A reproducible catalyst has been prepared by precipitating the catalyst precursor, as the hydroxide, in
Test-retest reliability of knee kinesthesia in healthy adults
Background Sensory information from mechanoreceptors in the skin, muscles, tendons, and joint structures plays an important role in joint stability. A joint injury can lead to disruption of the sensory system, which can be measured by proprioceptive acuity. When evaluating proprioception, assessment tools need to be reliable. The aim of this study was to assess the test-retest reliability of a de
Prevalence and clinical correlations of antibodies against six beta 2-glycoprotein-I-related peptides in the antiphospholipid syndrome
Two-hundred ninety five patients with the antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) were studied for the presence of antibodies against six anti-beta2GPI-related peptides Abs. The prevalence of a wide spectrum of clinical and laboratory parameters of APS was evaluated in all patients, and correlated with the presence of each anti-beta2GPI peptide antibody. The rates of the various antipeptides Abs ranged fr
