Evaluation of a school-based cognitive–behavioral depression prevention program

Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility and cost-utility of a school-based cognitive–behavioral (CB) depression prevention program. Methods: A quasi-experimental trial with an intervention group and a control group, with follow-up measurements obtained at three and 12 months after baseline, was conducted. The setting was six Swedish municipalities. The participants were stude

Ecological determinants of avian malaria infections : An integrative analysis at landscape, mosquito and vertebrate community levels

Vector and host communities, as well as habitat characteristics, may have important but different impacts on the prevalence, richness and evenness of vector-borne parasites. We investigated the relative importance of (1) the mosquito community composition, (2) the vertebrate community composition and (3) landscape characteristics on the prevalence, richness and evenness of avian Plasmodium. We hyp

Intravascular ultrasound assessment of minimum lumen area and intimal hyperplasia in in-stent restenosis after drug-eluting or bare-metal stent implantation. The Nordic Intravascular Ultrasound Study (NIVUS)

Introduction: Drug-eluting stents (DES) reduce the risk of restenosis after percutaneous coronary intervention. The aim of the study was to evaluate, by intravascular ultrasound (IVUS), the minimum lumen area site in the stented segment and the distribution of intimal hyperplasia in patients presenting with a DES or bare-metal stent (BMS) in-stent restenosis. Methods: The “Nordic Intravascular Ult

When the problem of incorrigible girls became a problem of psychopathy

Bolette Frydendahl Larsen explores the history of defining female juvenile delinquency through the emergence of the notion of psychopathy in the re-education of girls in interwar Denmark. The chapter argues that the category of psychopathy was used in the pragmatic management of the girls in re-education and that it also enabled a call for increased resources to solve the problem of female juvenil

Legal aid in Iceland

The aim of the chapter is to give a brief overview of the development of legal aid in civil cases in Iceland. The current law, which came into force in 1992, allows for legal aid to be granted not only on the basis of low economic status, but also if the outcome of the case is deemed to have great public or individual significance. The latter criterion, however, remains contested, seemingly as a m

Fourteen sequence variants that associate with multiple sclerosis discovered by meta-analysis informed by genetic correlations

A meta-analysis of publicly available summary statistics on multiple sclerosis combined with three Nordic multiple sclerosis cohorts (21,079 cases, 371,198 controls) revealed seven sequence variants associating with multiple sclerosis, not reported previously. Using polygenic risk scores based on public summary statistics of variants outside the major histocompatibility complex region we quantifie

Approximative computation methods for monostatic scattering from axially symmetric objects

Two approximation methods are presented for fast calculations of the monostatic scattering from axially symmetric scatterers coated with electromagnetic absorbers. The methods are designed for plane wave illumination parallel to the axis of rotation of the scatterer. The first method is based on simulating the scattering of a perfect electric conductor (PEC) enclosing the absorber coated scatterer

Influence of awareness and availability of medical alternatives on parents seeking paediatric emergency care

Aims: Direct seeking of care at paediatric emergency departments may result from an inadequate awareness or a short supply of medical alternatives. We therefore evaluated the care-seeking patterns, availability of medical options and initial medical assessments – with overall reference to socioeconomic status – of parents at an urban paediatric emergency department in a Scandinavian country provid

A more generalized fear response after a daytime nap

The aim of this study was to examine how a daytime nap affected the consolidation of fear learning. Participants first underwent fear conditioning during which they were exposed to a large and a small circle. One of these was repeatedly paired with an electric shock (making it the CS+), whereas the other circle was never paired with the shock (the CS−). After a delay interval containing either a n

Outcomes of psychotherapeutic and psychoeducative group interventions for children exposed to intimate partner violence

Witnessing violence toward a caregiver during childhood is associated with negative impact on children's health and development, and there is a need for effective interventions for children exposed to intimate partner violence in clinical as well as in community settings. The current effectiveness study investigated symptom reduction after participation in two established group interventions (one

Organisational factors and occupational balance in working parents in Sweden

Background: Parents with small children constitute a vulnerable group as they have an increased risk of sick leave due to stress-related disorders compared to adults without children. It has been shown that mothers and fathers to small children together spend more time in paid work than any other group, which could create negative stress and an experience of low occupational balance. Aim: The aim

Mental illness in Sweden (1896–1905) reflected through case records from a local general hospital

Mental illness in a hospital in a medium-sized town in Sweden was studied. Consecutive case records from 1896 to 1905, and also from 2011, were selected. In the historical sample, neurasthenia was the most common diagnosis, followed by affective disorders and alcohol abuse. ICD-10 diagnoses corresponded well with the historical diagnoses. Melancholia resembled modern criteria for depression. Mania

GARD : Genomic allergen rapid detection

Genomic allergen rapid detection (GARD) is an in vitro assay for the prediction of skin sensitizing capacity of chemicals. The GARD assay monitors changes in the expression of 196 genes, termed the GARD prediction signature. In short, MUTZ-3 cells, representing a well-characterized in vitro model of human dendritic cells (DCs), are exposed to the test substances for 24 h. After RNA extraction and

In the first half of the 1900s, 'yellow bulls' was a negative designation for a certain group of middle-men in Shanghai's commodity trade. Now, some 'yellow bulls' work in Shanghai's markets for counterfeit goods. They present themselves as 'real men', while fighting for a respectable place in reform-era urban China. 'Gule tyre' var i 1900-tallets første halvdel den negative betegnelse for en slag

Fabrication procedures and birefringence measurements for designing magnetically responsive lanthanide ion chelating phospholipid assemblies

Bicelles are tunable disk-like polymolecular assemblies formed from a large variety of lipid mixtures. Applications range from membrane protein structural studies by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to nanotechnological developments including the formation of optically active and magnetically switchable gels. Such technologies require high control of the assembly size, magnetic response and therma

Blue growth : savior or ocean grabbing?

While the global rush to control land resources is well established, ‘power-grabs’ in relation to marine and coastal resources are less well researched. Under the banner of ‘blue growth’, such power-grabs are taking shape through global policy processes that purportedly align the needs of the poor with profit interests and climate change concerns. This contribution critically interrogates these po

Relationship quality, well-being and, externalizing problems : The prospective importance of behavior profiles among young women who experienced care in special residential homes

This study examined the adjustment of a sample of adolescent girls and young women (N = 228) who were in compulsory care in Sweden between 1999 and 2000. Using person-oriented analyses, participants’ responses to the Adolescent Drug Abuse Diagnosis Instrument (Friedman & Utada, 1989; ADAD) at intake yielded five externalizing problem configurations. The main analyses focused on examining wheth
