Targeted sequencing of BRCA1 and BRCA2 across a large unselected breast cancer cohort suggests that one-third of mutations are somatic

BACKGROUND: A mutation found in the BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene of a breast tumor could be either germline or somatically acquired. The prevalence of somatic BRCA1/2 mutations and the ratio between somatic and germline BRCA1/2 mutations in unselected breast cancer patients are currently unclear.PATIENTS AND METHODS: Paired normal and tumor DNA was analyzed for BRCA1/2 mutations by massively parallel seque

3-Phosphoinositide-dependent kinase 1 potentiates upstream lesions on the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase pathway in breast carcinoma

Lesions of ERBB2, PTEN, and PIK3CA activate the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) pathway during cancer development by increasing levels of phosphatidylinositol-3,4,5-triphosphate (PIP(3)). 3-Phosphoinositide-dependent kinase 1 (PDK1) is the first node of the PI3K signal output and is required for activation of AKT. PIP(3) recruits PDK1 and AKT to the cell membrane through interactions with the

Social Mechanisms in Empirical Sociology : Introduction to Special Issue

The social mechanism program has been successful in sociology and neighboring social science disciplines, such as criminology and political science. However, in our view the literature on social mechanisms is still too preoccupied with intratheoretical and metatheoretical discussions, and we find very few empirical applications. This is surprising since one of the basic aims of the social mechanis

Terrorism, Belief Formation, and Residential Integration : Population Dynamics in the Aftermath of the 2004 Madrid Terror Bombings

In this article, we study the effects of the 2004 terrorist bombings in Madrid on ethnic segregation in Spain. Using large-scale Spanish register data consisting of information on 5.4 million international migration events on a monthly basis and 13.9 million intermunicipal migration events, of which 3.8 million events concern the foreign-born population’s internal migration within Spain, the analy

Brittle Failure Modes in Nailed Steel Plate Connections

This paper deals with theoretical and experimental investigations of nailed steel plate connections. For the experimental part, a total of 43 laboratory tests on connections loaded in tension parallel to the grain are reported. The paper deals also with finite element analysis of the connection, presenting a study on the 3D stress distributions within the wood member and a study of the progressive

Häktad eller omedelbart omhändertagen? : En studie om akuta frihetsberövanden av unga lagöverträdare.

This thesis deals with the question of how Swedish society responds when juveniles commit crimes. The concepts “treatment”/”goal-rational decision- making” and “correction”/ “norm-rational decision-making” is used to illustrate either the social services’ or the police/attorneys’ work. The focus of the study is social work co-operating with the legal system and the interaction between these two.Th

Social capital, friendship networks, and youth unemployment

Youth unemployment is a contemporary social problem in many societies. Youths often have limited access to information about jobs and limited social influence, yet little is known about the relationship between social capital and unemployment risk among youth. We study the effect of social capital on unemployment risk in a sample of 19 year olds of Swedish, Iranian, and Yugoslavian origin living i

Friendship networks and psychological well-being from late adolescence to young adulthood : A gender-specific structural equation modeling approach

BACKGROUND:The importance of supportive social relationships for psychological well-being has been previously recognized, but the direction of associations between both dimensions and how they evolve when adolescents enter adulthood have scarcely been addressed. The present study aims to examine the gender-specific associations between self-reported friendship network quality and psychological wel

Foreign molecules in biomembranes : Molecular effects on intact stratum corneum and model lipid systems

The skin is our largest organ and its main function is to protect us from uptake of foreign chemicals and from desiccation. The barrier function of the skin is mainly assured by its outermost layer, the stratum corneum (SC). When one wants to deliver a compound into or through the skin, for example in (trans)dermal drug delivery and cosmetics, one generally needs to make the skin more permeable. TThis thesis mainly explores how the molecular mobility of lipid and protein components in the outermost layer of the skin, the stratum corneum (SC), varies with different conditions and upon adding foreign compounds. These studies require methods that makes it possible to detect and characterize the minor amount of fluid components in the highly ordered solid SC sample with resolved molecular info

Aerodynamics in the amusement park : Interpreting sensor data for acceleration and rotation

The sky roller ride depends on interaction with the air to create a rolling motion. In this paper, we analyse forces, torque and angular velocities during different parts of the ride, combining a theoretical analysis, with photos, videos as well as with accelerometer and gyroscopic data, that may be collected e.g. with a smartphone. For interpreting the result, it must be taken into account that t
