Studies of the combustion process with simultaneous formaldehyde and OHPLIF in a direct-injected HCCI engine

This paper presents simultaneous laser based measurements of formaldehyde and OH-radical distributions in a 0.5 liter optical HCCI engine with direct injection. Formaldehyde is formed as an intermediate species when combusting hydrocarbons. The formation occurs through low temperature reactions in an early phase of the combustion process. Later in the process formaldehyde is being consumed. Formal

Phosphatised olenid trilobites and associated fauna from the Upper Cambrian of Vastergotland, Sweden

Secondarily phosphatised olenid trilobites from organic-rich limestones (orsten) in the Furongian (Upper Cambrian) of Vastergotland, south-central Sweden, are described and illustrated. All trilobites originate from the Peltura scarabaeoides Zone and were collected on the western slope of Kinnekulle. Only the dorsal exoskeletons have become secondarily phosphatised, and the ventral appendages are

Charge carrier photogeneration and recombination in ladder-type poly(para-phenylene): Interplay between impurities and external electric field

Charge carrier generation and decay in m-LPPP polymer films were examined by means of femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy in the time window of 100 fs-15 ns. Two modes of polaron formation with distinct behavior were identified, impurity induced in the absence of an external electric field and electric field induced in pristine film. While field induced charge generation is relatively sl

Immunohistochemical analysis of glioma-infiltrating leucocytes after peripheral therapeutic immunization with interferon-gamma-transfected glioma cells

We have shown previously that rejection of preinduced rat brain tumours is possible following therapeutic immunizations with interferon-gamma (IFN gamma)-transfected glioma cells (N32-IFN gamma). In the present study we have used the same model to evaluate whether quantitative differences in tumour-infiltrating lymphocytes can be detected between animals receiving therapeutic immunizations with ei

Iatrogenic injury to the accessory nerve.

We describe two patients with uncommon causes of iatrogenic injuries and review the anatomy, presentation, possibilities of repair, and results. The incidence of such nerve injuries during lymph node biopsies is 3%-10%, but the diagnosis is often delayed. Symptoms are shoulder pain and inability to abduct the arm beyond the horizontal plane. Surgical repair may improve function and pain and should

Monitoring referral and treatment in soft tissue sarcoma: study based on 1,851 patients from the Scandinavian Sarcoma Group Register

This report is based on 1.851 adult patients with soft tissue sarcoma (STS) of the extremities or trunk wall diagnosed between 1986 and 1997 and reported from all tertiary referral centers in Norway and Sweden. The median age at diagnosis was 65 years and the male-to-female ratio was 1.1:1. One third of the tumors were subcutaneous, one third deep, intramuscular and one third deep, extramuscular.

Ultrasonographic risk score of carotid plaques

OBJECTIVE: to determine the relative significance of ultrasonographic parameters of carotid plaques to develop an Activity Index (AI) which could correlate with clinical findings. METHOD: two hundred and fifteen plaques in 141 patients underwent ultrasonography and computer-assisted structural analysis. In half the patients (group 1), plaques were classified as either homogeneous and heterogeneous

Is optic nerve head swelling of prognostic value in central retinal vein occlusion?

Purpose. To investigate the prognostic value of optic nerve head swelling (ONHS) in central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) and compare it to other prognostic factors. Methods. Seventy-four patients with CRVO were studied retrospectively. The parameters analysed were the initial presence of ONHS, the fluorescein angiographic appearance, the implicit time in the 30-Hz flicker ERG and the initial visu

A computer program for the analysis of timber structures exposed to fire

The fundamental equations for the theoretical treatment of wood during the process of pyrolysis are presented in Chapter 1. Expressions which must be specially introduced for combustible materials are those which describe the pyrolyctic reaction and reactions at the surface of the material. The reactions are assumed t o conform to first order Arrhenius functions. The treatment also includes the va

Remote Multicolor Excitation Laser-Induced Fluorescence Imaging

Remote laser-induced fluorescence of stone materials was performed with application towards cultural heritage. Fluorescence was induced in targets ∼60 m from a mobile lidar laboratory by ultraviolet laser light, either from a frequency-tripled Nd:YAG laser or from an optical parametric oscillator system. Analysis was performed on combined spectra from the different excitation wavelengths and it wa

Search for a fourth generation b '-quark at LEP-II at root s=196-209GeV

A search for the pair production of fourth generation b'-quarks was performed using data taken by the DELPHI detector at LEP-II. The analysed data were collected at centre-of-mass energies ranging from 196 to 209 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 420 pb(-1). No evidence for a signal was found. Upper limits on BR(b'-> bZ) and BR(b'-> bZ) were obtained for b' masses ranging from 96 t

Iron superoxide dismutase from the archaeon Sulfolobus sulfataricus : Analysis of structure and thermostability.

The crystal structure of superoxide dismutase (SOD) from the hyper thermophile Sulfolobus solfataricus has been determined at 2.3 Å resolution by molecular replacement and refined to a crystallographic R-factor of 16.8 % (Rfree 19.8 %). The crystals belong to the space group C2 (a = 76.3 Å, b = 124.3 Å,c = 60.3 Å, β = 128.8°) with two identical monomers in the asymmetric unit. The monomer has a mo

A note on the simple random walk on Z^2: probability of exiting sequences of sets

In this note we establish that the probability that the simple random walk on Z2 returns to its origin before leaving a strip of width L has asymptotically the same probability as the one for hitting the origin before exiting the centered box of the same size. We also generalize this theorem for fairly arbitrary sequences of increasing sets in Z2.

Justice and Society : Problems of Reformist Politics

The subject of the dissertation is a theoretical discussion of the possibilities and limitations of reformist politics. Theories of social justice and democracy are discussed and assessed in relation to the argument that reformist politics, which underlie the welfare state program, is a contradictory politics. It is suggested that it is contradictory because reformism is constituted by a double re

Measuring and modelling stomatal conductance and photosynthesis in mature birch in Sweden

Stomatal conductance (gs), net photosynthesis (An) and twig water potential (Ct) were measured in mature silver birch (Betula pendula) during 3 years in southern Sweden. Measurements from 2 years were used to parameterise three different gs models and measurements from a 3rd year were used to validate these models. Two different multiplicative stomatal models were used. In one of these, the gs res
