The Postmigrant Society. A Conversation with Naika Foroutan.

21 maj 2025 13:15 till 14:45 Seminarium

How can we go beyond the binary between “migrants” and “non-migrants” to live together in societies that are becoming more and more plural? This is the question that scholars of the postmigrant society aim to ask and answer under the conditions of the 21st century where migration is the “new normal”. In connection with the conferment of the honorary doctorate of the Lund Faculty of Theology, this seminar features a conversation with the 2025 honorary doctor, Professor Dr. Dr. h.c. Naika Foroutan.

A public intellectual with international reach, Foroutan is Professor of Social Sciences at Humboldt-University Berlin where she heads the Department of Integration Studies and Social Policy at the Berlin Institute for Empirical Integration and Migration Research. She is also the Director of the German Center for Integration and Migration Research. As leading scholar of migration and integration, Foroutan has developed the concept of the postmigrant society in field-defining publications, such as The Postmigrant Society: A Promise of Plural Democracy (2019), The Society of Others, co-authored with journalist Jana Hensel (2020), and It would once be German… On the Postmigrant Society (2023).

Naika Foroutan will be in conversation with Dianne van den Bosch (Lund University) and Öykü Yener-Roderburg (Lund University). The conversation will be chaired by Ulrich Schmiedel (Lund University).
