A possible 5 km wide impact structure with associated 22 km wide exterior collapse terrain in the Alhabia–Tabernas Basin, southeastern Spain

The Tabernas–Alhabia Basin is a structural depression situated in the province of Almería, southeastern Spain. The basin is filled with Neogene, Pliocene, and Pleistocene sediments resting discordantly on a Paleozoic metamorphic basement. During the marine Tortonian sedimentation, a bed of breccia (Gordo megabed) was formed. It consists of rotated sedimentary megablocks commonly capped and/or surr

Characterisation and analysis of the surface texture of injection-moulded automotive interior ABS and PP components

Interior automotive plastic components are often manufactured by injection moulding since this technique enables cost-efficient manufacturing, large design freedom, and easy integration of functions. However, to obtain a high-quality impression, it is important to produce components with uniformity in texture, colour, and gloss. Unfortunately, this is rather difficult since a large number of mater

Toward Detecting and Addressing Corner Cases in Deep Learning Based Medical Image Segmentation

Translating machine learning research into clinical practice has several challenges. In this paper, we identify some critical issues in translating research to clinical practice in the context of medical image segmentation and propose strategies to systematically address these challenges. Specifically, we focus on cases where the model yields erroneous segmentation, which we define as corner cases

Further Validity Evidence for Patient-Specific Virtual Reality Temporal Bone Surgical Simulation

Objective: Patient-specific virtual reality (VR) simulation of cochlear implant (CI) surgery potentially enables preoperative rehearsal and planning. We aim to gather supporting validity evidence for patient-specific simulation through the analysis of virtual performance and comparison with postoperative imaging. Methods: Prospective, multi-institutional study. Pre- and postoperative cone-beam CT

The Case of Vanishing Borders : Theorizing diversity management as internal border control

The aim of this paper is to contribute to the theorizing of diversity management, studied from a postcolonial perspective. This paper draws on an empirical study of a Swedish municipal school for adults in order to theorize how construction of privileged and disadvantaged ethnic identities is an integral diversity management practice, situated in the Swedish context. Further, the paper looks not o

Electric off-road mobile machinery systems with portable energy supply and local energy generation

Electrification of many industries using off-road high power machines presents several problems. In order to analyse the viability of different solutions the logistics, machine operation and power management have to be analysed. In this paper a model is presented that in a novel way combines these problems into a complete system model that can be optimized on several levels. Complex charging schem

Highly Efficient Base Catalyzed N-alkylation of Amines with Alcohols and β-Alkylation of Secondary Alcohols with Primary Alcohols

Borrowing hydrogen (BH) reactions are very useful for the sustainable synthesis of C−C and C−N bonds. They generally operate with transition metal-based catalysts along with stoichiometric/catalytic amounts of added base. Here we report that two catalytic transformations, generally carried out with the BH methodology, i. e. N-alkylation of amines with alcohols and β-alkylation of secondary alcohol

Genetic variants associated with weight loss and metabolic outcomes after bariatric surgery : A systematic review

The extent to which genetic variations contribute to interindividual differences in weight loss and metabolic outcomes after bariatric surgery is unknown. Identifying genetic variants that impact surgery outcomes may contribute to clinical decision making. This review evaluates current evidence addressing the association of genetic variants with weight loss and changes in metabolic parameters afte

Precision cancer medicine : Concepts, current practice, and future developments

Precision cancer medicine is a multidisciplinary team effort that requires involvement and commitment of many stakeholders including the society at large. Building on the success of significant advances in precision therapy for oncological patients over the last two decades, future developments will be significantly shaped by improvements in scalable molecular diagnostics in which increasingly com

Are agricultural extension systems ready to scale up ecological intensification in East Africa? A literature review with particular attention to the Push-Pull Technology (PPT)

Agricultural extension, or advisory services, have a key role to play in supporting farmers’ learning and adoption of new practices and technologies. This paper analyses gaps and needs which require addressing in order for extension systems to more effectively contribute to the upscaling of ecological intensification approaches in East African smallholder agriculture. Our starting point is the pus

Optimizing fibrosis detection : a comparison of electroanatomical mapping and late enhancement gadolinium magnetic resonance imaging

Background: Fibrotic atrial cardiomyopathy plays an important role in determining the outcome of ablation in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). Two main methods are being used for the evaluation of fibrosis: voltage-based high-density (HD) electroanatomical mapping (EAM) and late gadolinium enhancement MRI (LGE-MRI). The comparability between both methods in detecting fibrosis has not been sy

Toeplitz determinants with a one-cut regular potential and Fisher-Hartwig singularities I. Equilibrium measure supported on the unit circle

We consider Toeplitz determinants whose symbol has: (i) a one-cut regular potential, (ii) Fisher-Hartwig singularities and (iii) a smooth function in the background. The potential is associated with an equilibrium measure that is assumed to be supported on the whole unit circle. For constant potentials, the equilibrium measure is the uniform measure on the unit circle and our formulas reduce to we

A cognitive-semiotic approach to impoliteness : Effects of conventionality and semiotic system on judgements of impoliteness by Russian and Swedish speakers

The field of (im)politeness studies has been steadily growing and developing but the role of conventionality and the type of semiotic system (e.g., language vs. gesture) for impoliteness perception has not been sufficiently explored. We used a cognitive-semiotic framework combining a reaction-time experiment and in-depth interviews with sixty participants to explore how Russian and Swedish native

Learning from the COVID- 19 Pandemic : Implications for Science, Health, and Healthcare

COVID-19 was first identified in Wuhan City in December 2019 and spread throughout Hubei Province and other parts of China. After causing significant morbidity and mortality in China, by February 2020, it had spread to numerous other countries, infecting millions of people and causing a large number of deaths across the world. The COVID-19 pandemic put a burden on almost all areas of the world inc

Impact of Covid- 19 on Science, Education, Health Care, Environment, Economy, and Lifestyle

Epidemics and pandemics are associated with a variety of life-threatening conditions and have serious effects on physical as well as mental wellbeing. The Covid-19 pandemic raised the same difficulties for public and private sectors including schools, businesses, healthcare sectors, etc. The disease, which originated in Wuhan, China in December 2019, has ravaged nearly every country in the world.

Dietary Intake and Body Mass Index Influence the Risk of Islet Autoimmunity in Genetically At-Risk Children : A Mediation Analysis Using the TEDDY Cohort

Background/Objective: Growth and obesity have been associated with increased risk of islet autoimmunity (IA) and progression to type 1 diabetes. We aimed to estimate the effect of energy-yielding macronutrient intake on the development of IA through BMI. Research Design and Methods: Genetically at-risk children (n = 5,084) in Finland, Germany, Sweden, and the USA, who were autoantibody negative at

Genetic mechanisms underlying arrhythmogenic mitral valve prolapse : Current and future perspectives

Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) is a heart valve disease that is often familial, affecting 2%–3% of the general population. MVP with or without mitral regurgitation can be associated with an increased risk of ventricular arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death (SCD). Research on familial MVP has specifically focused on genetic factors, which may explain the heritable component of the disease estimated to

Estimating Weak DOA Signals Using Adaptive Grid Selection

In this work, we consider the problem of estimating the directions of arrival of far-field sources impinging on a sensor array using a computationally efficient approach. A novel adaptive grid selection technique is employed to reduce the dimensionality of the used dictionary matrix. The method further makes use of a SPICE-inspired dictionary to adaptively select an appropriate regularization para
