Developmental phenotypic plasticity in embryos during incubation

Bird embryos depend on the attendance of parents to provide the optimal temperature for development. When parents cannot incubate optimally, the embryos need to adjust rates of growth and modes of development to compensate. I review data on the plasticity of embryo growth in birds, and relate this to mode of incubation, climate, nest insulation, and the continuum between precocial and altricial sp

Electrocochleographic and audiometric evaluation of hypobaric effect in Meniere's disease

OBJECTIVES: To elucidate the effects of hypobaric pressure on cochlear hydrodynamics in patents with well-defined Meniere's disease. DESIGN: Sixteen patients were consecutively selected. Elevated hearing threshold levels and pathological transtympanal electrocochleography (tt-ECOG) were confirmed at the day of trial. The patients were exposed to repeated episodes of hypobaric pressure in a pressur

Chromatography of microbial cells using continuous supermacroporous affinity and ion-exchange columns

Continuous supermacroporous chromatographic columns with anion-exchange ligands [2-(dimethylanlino)ethyl group] and immobilized metal affinity (IMA) ligands (Cu2+-loaded iminodiacetic acid) have been developed allowing binding of Escherichia coli cells and the elution of bound cells with high recoveries. These poly(acrylamide)-based continuous supermacroporous columns have been produced by radical

Making Manufacturing Flexibility Operational Part 1 - A Framework

Develops a framework for manufacturing flexibility which illustrates how to obtain consistency from manufacturing strategy to the resource characteristics in the production system. Provides guidance on how to analyse and develop manufacturing flexibility in a corporate decision-making context. Uses the well-known input-transformation-output (ITO) model as a starting point for building the frame-wo

Tankefigurer i socialt arbete : Operationalisering och reflektion

The dissertation is a case study, the topic of which was a participant-oriented research project in which a development programme for support to parents and care of young people was to be implemented in the organization and the concrete social work was developed and changed through researcher-supported intervention. The project was part of a large-scale effort for change and development carried ou

Extinction and recovery patterns of the vegetation across the Cretaceous-Palaeogene boundary - a tool for unravelling, the causes of the end-Permian mass-extinction

High-resolution palynofloral signatures through the Cretaceous-Palaeogene boundary succession show several features in common with the Permian-Triassic transition but there are also important differences. Southern Hemisphere Cretaceous-Palaeogene successions, to date studied at high resolution only in New Zealand, reveal a diverse palynoflora abruptly replaced by fungi-dominated assemblages that a

Neural network prediction of polyproline type II secondary structures

This study considers detection of polyproline type II secondary structures from protein sequences. This difficult problem was handled with multilayer perceptron neural networks, which were found to be useful for such bioinformatics studies. Polyproline II secondary structures have not previously been tried to be predicted from sequences.

Extent of salmeterol-mediated reassertion of relaxation in guinea-pig trachea pretreated with aliphatic side chain structural analogues

1. Salmeterol is a potent, selective and long acting beta 2-adrenoceptor agonist. In vitro, salmeterol exerts 'reassertion' relaxation of airways smooth muscle. Reassertion relaxation refers to the capacity of salmeterol to cause repeated functional antagonism of induced contraction when airway smooth muscle is intermittently exposed to, then washed free from, beta-adrenoceptor antagonists such as

Aqueous polymer two-phase systems formed by new thermoseparating polymers

A set of new polymers that can be used as phase forming components in aqueous two-phase systems is presented. All polymers studied have thermoseparating properties i.e. form one separate polymer enriched phase and one aqueous solution when heated above the critical temperature. This property makes the polymers attractive alternatives to the polymers used in traditional aqueous two-phase systems su

In Defence of the Open Question Argument

The purpose of this paper is to defend G. E. Moore's open question argument, understood as an argument directed against analytic reductionism, the view that moral properties are analytically reducible to non-moral properties. In the first section I revise Moore's argument in order to make it as plausible and resistant against objections as possible. In the following two sections I develop the argu

The allyl radical revisited: A theoretical study of the electronic spectrum.

In this Letter, we report the electronic spectrum of the allyl radical, obtained with multiconfigurational perturbation theory (MS-CASPT2). The assignment of the spectrum is in accordance with experiment to within 0.2 eV. We have computed the complete first Rydberg series and the beginning of the second Rydberg series. A new valence-excited 2B1 state has been found which has hitherto been hidden b

Bose-Einstein correlations in W+W- events at LEP2

Bose-Einstein correlations (BEC) between final state particles in the reaction e(+)e(-) -> W+ W- -> q(1)(q(2)) over barq(3)(q(4)over bar>) over bar) have been studied. Data corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 550 pb(-1), recorded by the DELPHI detector at centre-of-mass energies ranging from 189 to 209 GeV, were analysed. An indication for inter-W BEC between like-sign particles has
