Climatic signals and frequencies in the Swedish Time Scale, River Ångermanälven, Central Sweden

Popular Abstract in Swedish Denna avhandling handlar om hur man kan utläsa klimatiska signaler från klastiska årsvarviga sediment i Ångermanälven i södra Norrland. Avhandlingen bidrar med kunskap till den pågående diskussionen om klimatets- och den hydrologiska cykelns förändringar, framförallt sett ur ett retrospektiv men den behandlar också frågor om framtiden och en eventuellt ökande växthuseffAny future climate variation forced by human activities will be superimposed on the background of natural climate variation. Therefore, before interpreting the present climate and addressing future climate scenarios some knowledge of past climate is necessary. This thesis offers a rare glimpse into a long record of fluvial activity in Central Sweden and illuminates some of the possible forcing age

Psychology in a global world - Locally relevant ... but globally ignored?

Abstract in UndeterminedThe indigenous psychologies (mostly, Non-Western approaches to scientific research in psychology) occur in different varieties but they all aim to be culturally and pragmatically relevant to the researcher’s own society. In these psychologies Western mainstream psychology has been argued to be too affected by liberal, individualistic and secular values. Some examples of suc

The role of K2O in the selective reduction of NO with NH3 over a V2O5(WO3)/TiO2 commercial selective catalytic reduction catalyst

To elucidate the nature of the acid sites of the V2O5(WO3)/TiO2 catalyst upon K2O addition and its relation to the selective reduction of NO with NH3, measurements were made by means of infrared and Raman spectroscopy, NH3 chemisorption, and NO reduction measurements as a function of the K2O loading. The catalytic activity was found to decrease rapidly with the K2O loading, irrespective of the sim

Intermediate resonance excitation in the gamma p -> p pi(0)pi(0) reaction

The helicity dependence of the total cross section for the (gamma) over right arrow(p) over right arrow -> p pi(0)pi(0) reaction has been measured for the first time at incident photon energies from 400 to 800 MeV. The measurement, performed at the tagged photon beam facility of the MAMI accelerator in Mainz, used the large acceptance detector DAPHNE and a longitudinally polarized frozen-spin targ

Environmental Monitoring - using diode-laser-based spectroscopic techniques

Monitoring of environmental gases is necessary to understand the complex processes governing global warming and the impact of pollutant emissions related to human activity. Diode-laser-based spectroscopic techniques, being robust and affordable, have a great potential to become an industrially well-established technology for environmental sensing. This thesis deals with the further development of

One week sweating simulation test with a thermal foot model

This study aimed to find out how the insulation of the footwear changes over one week of use. A thermal foot model with 8 measuring zones and 5 “sweat glands” was used for tests. A thin sock was donned on the model to allow better water distribution all over the foot surface. Four boots were tested over a period of 5 days. Each day was divided into 9 hour measurement period and 15 hour conditionin

Performance of an On-Demand Beam Excitation System for PIXE Analysis

A system for electrostatic on-demand beam excitation in PIXE analysis has been built and carefully tested. Significantly increased count rate capability without any need for corrections for electronic dead time and with less target deterioration makes the system superior to a traditional system with electronic pile-up rejection. By adding a fast external electronic pulse pile-up rejection system,

Changes in bone mineral, lean body mass and fat content as measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry: a longitudinal study

Bone mineral density (BMD) and soft tissue composition were measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) 3-4 years apart in 273 men and women aged 23-90. We found different rates of BMD loss in different skeletal regions. There were also different rates of BMD loss in different regions within the hip. Average rates of loss for male subjects 50 years of age and above for BMD total body were 0

A Silicon-Tungsten Electromagnetic Calorimeter for LEP

This report describes a silicon-tungsten electromagnetic calorimeter used to determine some beam properties and luminosity in the DELPHI experiment at LEP. The polar angular range covered by this detector is 5–8 mrad, which allows the detection of a Bhabha rate about 10 times the rate of produced Z particles at the peak cross section.

Thermal manikin measurements - exact or not?

According to the European prestandard ENV 342:1998, the thermal insulation of cold-protective clothing is measured with a thermal manikin. Systematic studies on the reproducibility of the values, measured with different types of clothing on the commonly used standing and walking manikins, have not been reported in the literature. Over 300 measurements were done in 8 different European laboratories

Bibeltolkningens metoder

Induced morphological defenses in the wild: Predator effects on a mayfly, Drunella coloradensis

Phenotypic plasticity may enable organisms to optimize their phenotypes in environments that are heterogeneous over time or space. For example, inducible defenses are favored for prey populations faced with variable predation risk. We studied the impact of brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) on the development of defensive morphological characters in larvae of the mayfly, Drunella coloradensis, bo

C*-crossed products and shift spaces

We use Exel's C*-crossed products associated to non-invertible dynamical systems to associate a C*-algebra to arbitrary shift space. We show that this C*-algebra is canonically isomorphic to the C*-algebra associated to a shift space given by Carlsen [Cuntz–Pimsner C*-algebras associated with subshifts, Internat. J. Math. (2004) 28, to appear, available at arXiv:math.OA/0505503], has the C*-algeb
