Towards cell replacement therapy in Parkinson’s disease. Proteoglycans and Nogo-A as modulators of axonal growth in midbrain dopaminergic neurons

Popular Abstract in English Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the second most common, after Alzheimer’s disease, neurodegenerative disease in man. Stiffness in joints, shaky hands, and slowness of movements make it difficult for people with PD to complete normal daily tasks like buttoning up a shirt. Additionally, PD affects memory, mood, sleep and the function of the gastro-intestinal tract. Over time,Parkinson’s disease (PD) is currently the second most common neurodegenerative disorder (after Alzheimer’s disease). PD is diagnosed on its motor symptoms, which include akinesia, bradykinesia, rigidity, postural imbalance and resting tremor. It is well established that the motor symptoms develop due to lack of dopamine in the striatum. This is caused by progressive degeneration of dopaminergic ne

Interpretation of the high spin states in Lu-161: A paired and unpaired study

A paired cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky-Bogoliubov (CNSB) model is presented, which employs the same method to calculate the liquid-drop energy and moment of inertia as the unpaired cranked Nilsson-Strutinsky (CNS) model. In the CNSB model, the energy minimization is carried out in the mesh of pairing gaps Delta and Fermi levels lambda as well as deformation parameters. The high spin states in Lu-161

Bracketing the Age of Magmatic-Hydrothermal Activity at the Cerro de Pasco Epithermal Polymetallic Deposit, Central Peru: A U-Pb and Ar-40/Ar-39 Study

The Cerro de Pasco epithermal Cordilleran base metal deposit in central Peru consists of two mineralization stages which are spatially and genetically related to a mid-Miocene diatreme-dome complex. In order to constrain the duration of the magmatic-hydrothermal system at Cerro de Pasco, U-Ph age determinations and Hf isotope determinations have been conducted on single zircon grains. Biotite from

Small-Sample Improved Seasonal Unit Root Tests for Trending and Breaking Series

In this paper three unit root tests that allow for a break in both the seasonal mean and linear trend of the data are proposed. The tests, which can be seen as smallsample corrected versions of already known asymptotic tests, are shown to perform very well in simulations, and much better than their asymptotic counterparts.

Anaerobic treatment of methanol condensate from pulp mill compared with anaerobic treatment of methanol using mesophilic UASB reactors.

The feasibility of anaerobic treatment of methanol condensate from pulp and paper mill in UASB reactor was investigated and compared with the anaerobic treatment of methanol. The UASB reactor treating methanol condensate was operated for 480days with minimum problems of overload. COD removal from methanol condensate and methanol under normal operating conditions ranged from 84-86% to 86-98%, respe

Mortality and Morbidity among Farmers, Nonfarming Rural Men, and Urban Referents A Prospective Population-Based Study

A cohort of 1,220 farmers, 1,130 nonfarming rural men, and 1,087 urban referents from Sweden were monitored for 12 years. Farmers had lower mortality than urban referents for all causes of death (hazard ratio [HR] = 0.51; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.37-0.71), cancer (HR = 0.44; 95% CI, 0.24-0.78) and cardiovascular diseases (HR = 0.60; 95% CI, 0.36-0.99). Nonfarming rural men had lower mortali

Pamfletter!

Det teoretiska och metodologiska syftet är att diskutera vilket slaThis thesis discusses argumentative strategies for legitimation and delegitimation in political pamphlets published in 1769 and in 1809–1810, each period representing the onset of democracy and freedom of the press. The aim of the study is twofold. The empirical aim is to examine the political language in the early political debate in pamphlets, with a focus on how the discursive strategies of leg

Ways of constructing research questions: gap-spotting or problematization?

This article examines ways of constructing research questions from existing literature, which are likely to promote the development of interesting and influential theories. We review 52 articles in organization studies and develop a typology of how researchers construct their research questions from existing literature. The most common way across paradigmatic camps is to spot various 'gaps' in the

Characterization of the complete genomes of Camelus dromedarius papillomavirus types 1 and 2

Camel papillomatosis has been described previously, but the genome of the suspected papillomavirus (PV) has not been identified. An outbreak of papillomatosis occurred in a dromedary farm of 55 animals in Sudan during August 2009. The disease was only present in young animals aged about 3-7 months, of which 44% (11/25) were affected with lesions, mainly on the lips and lower jaw. This study report

Concepts of functioning and health important to people with systemic sclerosis: a qualitative study in four European countries

Objective To describe the experiences of people with systemic sclerosis (SSc) in different European countries of functioning and health and to link these experiences to the WHO International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) to develop a common understanding from a bio-psycho-social perspective. Method A qualitative multicentre study with focus-group interviews was perform

Greater reduction of platelet activation markers and platelet-monocyte aggregates by prasugrel compared to clopidogrel in stable coronary artery disease

Prasugrel, a novel P2Y(12) ADP-receptor antagonist, has been reported to achieve greater inhibition of platelet aggregation compared to clopidogrel as assessed by light transmission aggregometry. It was the objective of this study to investigate the effect of prasugrel on alternative markers of platelet activation in comparison to a high loading dose and the approved maintenance dose of clopidogre

Zinc Transporter 8 Autoantibodies and Their Association With SLC30A8 and HLA-DQ Genes Differ Between Immigrant and Swedish Patients With Newly Diagnosed Type 1 Diabetes in the Better Diabetes Diagnosis Study.

We examined whether zinc transporter-8 autoantibodies (ZnT8A; arginine ZnT8-RA, tryptophan ZnT8-WA, and glutamine ZnT8-QA variants) differed between immigrant and Swedish patients due to different polymorphisms of SLC30A8, HLA-DQ, or both. Newly diagnosed autoimmune (≥1 islet autoantibody) T1D type 1 diabetic patients (n = 2,964,

Interstitial laser thermotherapy (ILT) of breast cancer - Methodology and immunological responce

Interstitial laser thermotherapy (ILT) is an attractive form of local therapy against cancer because of its anti-tumor immune activity. The aim of this work was to evaluate ILT in breast cancer with respect to technique, changes in tissue immunocompetent cells and effect on prognosis. The method is dependent on accurate assessment of the tumor, and another aim was therefore to evaluate if MRI is b

Electrochemical behavior and application of Prussian blue nanoparticle modified graphite electrode

Prussian blue nanoparticles (PBNPs) were immobilized on the surface of a graphite electrode (GE) through a simple adsorption route and then the modified surface was covered with a layer of Nafion. The electrochemical behavior of the resulting sensor was investigated using cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry. The sensor showed good electrocatalytic activity toward hydrogen peroxide reduction,

Modelling the response of stable water isotopes in Greenland precipitation to orbital configurations of the previous interglacial

The relation between delta O-18 of precipitation and temperature has been used in numerous studies to reconstruct past temperatures at ice core sites in Greenland and Antarctica. During the past two decades, it has become clear that the slope between delta O-18 and temperature varies in both space and time. Here, we use a general circulation model driven by changes in orbital parameters to investi

Therapeutic Effect of Blocking CXCR2 on Neutrophil Recruitment and Dextran Sodium Sulfate-Induced Colitis

Dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis in mice is characterized by polymorphonuclear neutrophil (PMN) infiltration into the colonic mucosa and lumen. The mechanism by which this occurs is unclear. To begin to understand the mechanism, we determined the role of the PMN chemokine receptor, CXCR2, in DSS-induced colitis by using CXCR2(-/-) mice or by neutralizing CXCR2. DSS was administered thr
