Thylakoids promote release of the satiety hormone cholecystokinin while reducing insulin in healthy humans.

Objective. The effects of a promising new appetite suppressor named "thylakoids" (membrane proteins derived from spinach leaves) were examined in a single meal in man. Thylakoids inhibit the lipase/colipase hydrolysis of triacylglycerols in vitro and suppress food intake, decrease body-weight gain and raise the satiety hormone cholecystokinin (CCK) in rats, but their effects in man remain unclear.

Improved quality in the hospital discharge summary reduces medication errors-LIMM: Landskrona Integrated Medicines Management.

PURPOSE: We have developed a model for integrated medicines management, including tools and activities for medication reconciliation and medication review. In this study, we focus on improving the quality of the discharge summary including the medication report to reduce medication errors in the transition from hospital to primary and community care. METHODS: This study is a longitudinal study wit

The Birth and Early Evolution of the Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD) Concept.

An historical overview of the development of the concept of frontotemporal dementia is presented, regarding the last 30 years, using as a backbone the conferences held on this theme, with a start in 1986 in Lund, Sweden. Since then, a dramatic increase in research activities and publications has rapidly expanded our knowledge in this field, a step necessary for the ultimate goal to find an effecti

Minimizing Contrast Medium Doses to Diagnose Pulmonary Embolism with 80-kVp Multidetector Computed Tomography in Azotemic Patients.

Background: In diagnosing acute pulmonary embolism (PE) in azotemic patients, scintigraphy and magnetic resonance imaging are frequently inconclusive or not available in many hospitals. Computed tomography is readily available, but relatively high doses (30-50 g I) of potentially nephrotoxic iodine contrast media (CM) are used. Purpose: To report on the diagnostic quality and possible contrast-ind

Protein subtype-targeting through ligand epimerization: talose-selectivity of galectin-4 and galectin-8.

A series of O2 and O3-derivatized methyl beta-d-talopyranosides were synthesized and evaluated in vitro as inhibitors of the galactose-binding galectin-1, -2, -3, -4 (N- and C-terminal domains), 8 (N-terminal domain), and 9 (N-terminal domain). Galectin-4C and 8N were found to prefer the d-talopyranose configuration to the natural ligand d-galactopyranose configuration. Derivatization at talose O2

Nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae Adhesin Protein E: Characterization and Biological Activity.

The adhesin protein E (PE) of the human respiratory pathogen nontypeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi) exists in all clinical isolates. In the present study, NTHi adherence to epithelial cells of various origins was further analyzed. The number of intraepithelial PE-deficient NTHi was decreased compared with PE-expressing NTHi. Interestingly, PE-expressing NTHi or Escherichia coli transformants, i

Doppler-variant modeling of the vocal tract

A common technique to deploy linear prediction to non- stationary signals is time segmentation and local analysis. Variations of a process within such a segment cause inac- curacies. In this paper, we model the temporal changes of linear prediction coefficients (LPCs) as a Fourier series. We obtain a compact description of the vocal tract model limited by the predictor order and the maximum Dopple

Evidence for a rapid sea-level rise at 7600 years ago

Dating the transgression and subsequent regression in marginal basins of the southeastern Swedish Baltic Sea provides a new perspective of global ice-volume changes and the isostatic adjustment of the mantle after the retreat of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet from this area. Superimposed upon a smooth pattern of local sea-level rise, acceleration occurred ca. 7600 calibrated (cal) yr B.P., evidenced a
