ETS and plastid sequence data indicate a spontaneous origin of Scandinavian betony, Betonica officinalis L.

Background and aims: Betony (Betonica officinalis L.) is one of the rarest and mostspectacular plants in the Scandinavian flora. A long-term question has been whether it is spontaneous or introduced, or whether it comprises both spontaneous and introduced populations. This study aimed to answer this question by analyzing sequence data from the nuclear external transcribed spacer (ETS) region and t

Bacterial antibody hydrolyzing enzymes – as bacterial virulence factors and biotechnological tools

Antibodies are an essential part of the human immune system, and antibody mediated immunity has been an area of interest for many researchers for almost a century. An accumulation of knowledge regarding antibody structure, glycosylation and receptor interactions has contributed to the current understanding of antibody mediated immunity. It has more recently become evident how bacteria and other mi

Hypophysiotrophic systems in the brain of the Atlantic salmon. Neuronal innervation of the pituitary and the origin of pituitary dopamine and nonapeptides identified by means of combined carbocyanine tract tracing and immunocytochemistry

The neuroanatomical organization of neurons projecting to the pituitary and the origin of pituitary dopamine and nonapeptides were investigated in the brain of the Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). Carbocyanine tract tracing in combination with tyrosine hydroxylase, arginine vasotocin and isotocin immunocytochemistry for double labelling revealed a previously unknown organization of hypophysiotrophic

Byggherredialogen i Sege Park : –reflektioner två år in i processen

Sustainable operations in reusable food packaging networks

This chapter explores the processes of a typical logistics network for the management of reusable packaging for food products. While theimpacts associated with packaging waste in the food sector are well known, the adoption of reusable crates or handling systems for fooditems entails many logistics processes such as storage, transportation, and cleaning, whose impact needs to be quantified and assThis chapter explores the processes of a typical logistics network for the management of reusable packaging for food products. Cold Atmospheric Plasma Disarms M1 Protein, an Important Streptococcal Virulence Factor

Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) has been demonstrated to be a successful antiseptic for chronic and infected wounds. Although experimental work has focused on elucidation of the curative power of CAP for wound healing, the molecular mechanisms behind this ability are less understood. To date, the direct effect of CAP on the activity of microbial virulence factors has not been investigated. In the pr

Disentangling ‘ecosystem services’ and ‘nature’s contributions to people’

People depend on functioning ecosystems, which provide benefits that support human existence and wellbeing. The relationship between people and nature has been experienced and conceptualized in multiple ways. Recently, ecosystem services (ES) concepts have permeated science, government policies, multi-national environmental agreements, and science–policy interfaces. In 2017, the Intergovernmental

Partially-deuterated nucleotide residues in large DNA duplex simplify the spectral overlap and provide both the J-coupling and nOe informations by the “NMR-window” approach

The nucleobase-prolecled parlially-deuteraled 5′-O-DMTr-2′#,2″#,3′,4′#, 5′,5″-2H5-2′-deoxyribonucleoside 3′-phosphoramidite derivatives 17a,b – 20a,b. containing C2′ isolopomeric mixture of deuterons and protons 1~15 atom % 2H at C2′(R), ~85 atom % 2H at C2′(S); 65 atom % 2H at C4′ (#), >97 atom % 2H at C3′ and C5′, i.e. Blocks B and C in Fig. 11, have been site specifically incorporated into a se

Inhibition of epileptiform activity by neuropeptide Y in brain tissue from drug-resistant temporal lobe epilepsy patients

In epilepsy patients, drug-resistant seizures often originate in one of the temporal lobes. In selected cases, when certain requirements are met, this area is surgically resected for therapeutic reasons. We kept the resected tissue slices alive in vitro for 48 h to create a platform for testing a novel treatment strategy based on neuropeptide Y (NPY) against drug-resistant epilepsy. We demonstrate

Loss of ZnT8 function protects against diabetes by enhanced insulin secretion

A rare loss-of-function allele p.Arg138* in SLC30A8 encoding the zinc transporter 8 (ZnT8), which is enriched in Western Finland, protects against type 2 diabetes (T2D). We recruited relatives of the identified carriers and showed that protection was associated with better insulin secretion due to enhanced glucose responsiveness and proinsulin conversion, particularly when compared with individual

Phytate, iron, zinc, and calcium content of common Bolivian foods and their estimated mineral bioavailability

There is a scarcity of information on mineral and phytate content in plant-based foods in Bolivia. This study aimed to analyze iron, zinc, calcium, and phytate content and estimate the mineral bioavailability of foods consumed in Chapare, Bolivia. Minerals and phytate were analyzed, and bioavailability was estimated in 17 food samples. Leafy vegetables and green legumes had the highest mineral con
