Subalgebras in K[x] of small codimension

We introduce the concept of subalgebra spectrum, Sp(A), for a subalgebra A of finite codimension in K[x]. The spectrum is a finite subset of the underlying field. We also introduce a tool, the characteristic polynomial of A, which has the spectrum as its set of zeroes. The characteristic polynomial can be computed from the generators of A, thus allowing us to find the spectrum of an algebra given

Solo mothers’ by choice experiences during pregnancy and early parenthood : Thoughts and feelings related to maternal health-services

The present study examined the thoughts and feelings of solo mothers by choice (SMC) regarding their experiences during pregnancy and early parenthood, with special focus on their contact with maternal health-services (MCHS). Semi-structured interviews were carried out with solo mothers (N = 10) who had undergone assisted fertilization in Sweden. Thematic analysis revealed two main themes. The fir

Incidental pulmonary embolism in patients with cancer : prevalence, underdiagnosis and evaluation of an AI algorithm for automatic detection of pulmonary embolism

Objectives: To assess the prevalence of reported and unreported incidental pulmonary embolism (iPE) in patients with cancer, and to evaluate an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm for automatic detection of iPE. Methods: Retrospective cohort study on patients with cancer with an elective CT study including the chest between 2018-07-01 and 2019-06-30. All study reports and images were reviewed t

Association Between Dietary Habits in Midlife With Dementia Incidence Over a 20-Year Period

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Dementia cases are expected to triple during the next 30 years, highlighting the importance of finding modifiable risk factors for dementia. The aim of this study is to investigate whether adherence to conventional dietary recommendations or to a modified Mediterranean diet are associated with subsequent lower risk of developing all-cause dementia, Alzheimer's disease (A

Blood lead levels and risk of atherosclerosis in the carotid artery : Results from a swedish cohort

BACKGROUND: Lead exposure has been associated with increased incidence of adverse clinical cardiovascular outcomes. Atherosclerosis has been suggested as one of the underlying mechanisms, and findings from experimental studies support this, but human data are scarce. OBJECTIVES: Our objective was to determine the association between environmental lead exposure based on blood lead (B-Pb) concentrat

Shared language is essential : Communication in a multiethnic obstetric care setting

This study focuses on communication and conceptions of obstetric care to address the postulates that immigrant women experience sensitive care through the use of an ethnically congruent interpreter and that such women prefer to meet health providers of the same ethnic and gender profile when in a multiethnic obstetrics care setting. During 2005-2006, we conducted in-depth interviews in Greater Lon

Experimental Validation of Single Base Station 5G mm Wave Positioning : Initial Findings

5G cellular networks can utilize millimeter wave signals, and support large bandwidths and large antenna arrays, which provide more geometric-based signals and higher delay and angle resolutions. These merits bring new opportunities in positioning the user with limited infrastructure through the use of combined angle and delay information. However, there are many practical challenges to overcome,

High-sensitivity troponin I with or without ultra-sensitive copeptin for the instant rule-out of acute myocardial infarction

Background: The instant, single-sampling rule-out of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is still an unmet clinical need. We aimed at testing and comparing diagnostic performance and prognostic value of two different single-sampling biomarker strategies for the instant rule-out of AMI. Methods: From the Biomarkers in Acute Cardiac Care (BACC) cohort, we recruited consecutive patients with acute ches

Stellar kinematics in surveys and simulations

We study stellar motions in the Milky Way with N-body simulations and large astrometric samples from ESA's Gaia mission. We identify two kinematic populations for white dwarfs in the Solar neighbourhood. We also investigate the accreted halo and reveal two new structures. Finally, our simulations show that radial migration as a function of vertical action depends on disc mass.

“This is no Eden:” Three generations of researchers coping with team conflicts in an outstanding research environment

Based on interviews with three generations of professors reflecting upon their development as early career researchers in an outstanding research environment within the STEMfield, this study aimed to explore how they had coped with relationship conflicts in the environment, how this had an impact on their team socialisation, and how their development was framed by their supervisors’ leadership. Us

Radiopaque dyes allow vessel imaging in lung tissue using laboratory phase contrast micro-CT

Phase contrast micro-CT is a powerful technique allowing imaging of soft tissue at synchrotrons or using lab- oratory sources. The use of contrast agents is a useful approach when imaging vascular structures. However, common x-ray contrast agents typically rely on heavy metals to increase absorption, which may affect the phase contrast and cause artifacts in the reconstructed volumes. Thus, utiliz

α-Synuclein Interaction with Lipid Bilayer Discs

α-Synuclein (aSyn) is a 140 residue long protein present in presynaptic termini of nerve cells. The protein is associated with Parkinson's disease, in which case it has been found to self-Assemble into long amyloid fibrils forming intracellular inclusions that are also rich in lipids. Furthermore, its synaptic function is proposed to involve interaction with lipid membranes, and hence, it is of in

The rigour-relevance debate : strategies to avoid creating an ivory tower in entrepreneurship research1

Traditionally entrepreneurship and small business research has been regarded as a practical and relevant research field, providing knowledge to be used to solve various societal problems. As the field is becoming more and more institutionalized in the academic system, scientific rigour in research has been emphasized at the expense of relevance. In the chapter the authors strives to show that prod

Coding for intangible competitive advantage - mapping the distribution and characteristics of software-developing firms in the Swedish economy

Software is at the core of digitalisation and is often claimed to play a central role in innovation and in shaping competition across industries and firms. There are yet few studies of the extent and nature of software development across firms. We employ a unique firm-level survey comprising 3,929 firms across Sweden to analyse the distribution and characteristics of firms that invest in software

Enhancement of phase change materials by nanoparticles to improve battery thermal management for autonomous underwater vehicles

Battery thermal management (BTM) plays a significant role in the safety and reliability of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV) at higher speeds. In this study, a nanoparticle/phase change material (nano-PCM) composite is proposed for the BTM of an AUV. The effects of nanoparticle loading percentage (φ = 5, 10, and 15%) and nanoparticle filling range (α = 30, 60, 90, and 120°) on the battery tempe

Timing and synchrony of migration in a freshwater fish : Consequences for survival

Animal migration is one of the most spectacular and visible behavioural phenomena in nature with profound implications for a range of ecological and evolutionary processes. Successful migration hinges on the ability to exploit temporary resources (e.g. food) and evade threats (e.g. predators) as they arise, and thus the timing of migration is often regarded as a dominant predictor of individual mi
