Classification of bird song syllables using wigner-ville ambiguity function cross-terms

A novel feature extraction method for lowdimensional signal representation is presented. The features are useful for classification of non-stationary multi-component signals with stochastic variation in amplitudes and time-frequency locations. Using a penalty function to suppress the Wigner-Ville ambiguity function auto-terms, the proposed feature set is based on the cross-term doppler- and lag pr

Integration of reliability analysis into mini-plate fixation strategy used in human mandible fractures : Convalescence and healing periods

Purpose: The objective was to assess the reliability level of mini-plate fixation used in fracture mandibles in order to evaluate the structure stability in both convalescence and healing periods. Methods: In the convalescence period, the failure scenario is measured by the relative displacement between two fracture surfaces which should not exceed an acceptable value in order to obtain a good sta

Effects of Nozzle Diameter on Diesel Spray Flames : A numerical study using an Eulerian Stochastic Field Method

The present numerical study aims to assess the performance of an Eulerian Stochastic Field (ESF) model in simulating spray flames produced by three fuel injectors with different nozzle diameters of 100 μm, 180 μm and 363 μm. A comparison to the measurements shows that although the simulated ignition delay times are consistently overestimated, the relative differences remain below 28%. Furthermore,

K2-111 b - a short period super-Earth transiting a metal poor, evolved old star

Context. From a light curve acquired through the K2 space mission, the star K2-111(EPIC 210894022) has been identified as possibly orbited by a transiting planet.Aims: Our aim is to confirm the planetary nature of the object and derive its fundamental parameters. Methods: We analyse the light curve variations during the planetary transit using packages developed specifically for exoplanetary transi

The naked truth about HIV and risk taking in Swedish prisons : A qualitative study

Background: This qualitative study explores former prison inmates’ perceptions and attitudes towards HIV risk inside Swedish prisons. Method: In 2014, eight semi-structured interviews were conducted with former male prisoners to gain a deeper understanding of situations perceived to be associated with risk of HIV transmission. The material gathered from the interviews was analyzed by manifest and

Defining and applying surrogate safety measures and behavioural indicators through site-based observations

This dissertation looks into surrogate safety measures and behavioural indicators that are collected through site-based observations. Surrogate safety measures are defined as measurements that are used to describe the relationship between two road users in a traffic event for the purpose of quantifying the crash probability and/or the potential crash severity in a meaningful way. The main goal of

The role of segmental and suprasegmental information in word-level and sentence-level predictions

IntroductionThis contribution presents recent research results on segmental andsuprasegmental cues to word-internal and sentence-level structure. InSwedish, prosody is tightly connected to morphological and syntacticstructure. For example, every word stem is pronounced with either a low or ahigh tone. The stem tone depends on what follows the stem. Thus, if asingular suffix is connected to the wor

Random Models in Time and Space with Financial, Economics and Engineering Applications : Structural Covariance in Space and Stochastic Variability in Time

In this thesis, we model stochastic processes in time and space. We focus on the processes whose covariance structure is either changing over the time span, or depends on the location in space. We develop models that appropriately describe and analyze such data behaviors in various different fields including finance, economics and engineering. This thesis begins with an introductory section which

ACTH stimulation test and computed tomography are useful for differentiating the subtype of primary aldosteronism

The diagnostic steps for primary aldosteronism (PA) include case screening tests, confirmatory tests, and localization. The aim of this study was to identify useful confirmatory tests and their cut-off values for differentiating the subtype of primary aldosteronism, especially in unilateral PA, such as aldosterone-producing adenoma, and bilateral PA, such as idiopathic hyperaldosteronism. Seventy-

Repetitive glucose spikes accelerate atherosclerotic lesion formation in C57BL/6 mice

Background: A number of epidemiological studies demonstrated that postprandial hyperglycemia is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease in individuals with impaired glucose tolerance. Although several laboratory studies have addressed the plausible causal role of postprandial acute hyperglycemia (glucose spikes) in the development of atherosclerosis, there is little convincing evidence in vivo wh

Sex hjälpverb och deras historia. En grammatikaliseringsstudie : Recension av Mara Bylin: Aspektuella hjälpverb i svenskan. (Acta universitatis Stockholmensis. Stockholm Studies in Scandinavian Philology. New Series 58.) Stockholm: Stockholms universitet (2013).

In her dissertation Aspektuella hjälpverb i svenskan, Maria Bylin investigates the evolution of six aspectual auxiliaries in Swedish (bruka ‘use to’, tendera ‘tend to’, börja ‘begin’, fortsätta ‘continue’, sluta ‘stop’ and hota ‘threaten’). The study is conducted within the framework of grammaticalization, and Bylin’s primary method is to apply so-called auxiliary tests on a historical material co

The Validity of the Screen for Child Anxiety Related Emotional Disorders Revised (SCARED-R) Scale and Sub-Scales in Swedish Youth

We evaluated the clinical utility of the Swedish SCARED-R in child- and adolescent psychiatric outpatients (n = 239) and validated it against Longitudinal Expert All Data (LEAD) DSM IV diagnoses based on the Children’s Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia (KSADS) and subsequent clinical work-up and treatment outcome. The SCARED-R total score and subscales had acceptable sensitivity/s

Benefits and Harms of Treatment of Asymptomatic Bacteriuria : A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis by the European Association of Urology Urological Infection Guidelines Panel

People with asymptomatic bacteriuria (ABU) are often unnecessarily treated with antibiotics risking adverse effects and antimicrobial resistance. We performed a systematic review to determine any benefits and harms of treating ABU in particular patient groups. Relevant databases were searched and eligible trials were assessed for risk-of-bias and Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development

Shifted dynamic interactions between subcortical nuclei and inferior frontal gyri during response preparation in persistent developmental stuttering

Persistent developmental stuttering is associated with basal ganglia dysfunction or dopamine dysregulation. Here, we studied whole-brain functional connectivity to test how basal ganglia structures coordinate and reorganize sensorimotor brain networks in stuttering. To this end, adults who stutter and fluent speakers (control participants) performed a response anticipation paradigm in the MRI scan

Ravens parallel great apes in flexible planning for tool-use and bartering

The ability to flexibly plan for events outside of the current sensory scope is at the core of being human and is crucial to our everyday lives and society. Studies on apes have shaped a belief that this ability evolved within the hominid lineage. Corvids, however, have shown evidence of planning their food hoarding, although this has been suggested to reflect a specific caching adaptation rather

Searching for monocular microsaccades - a red Hering of modern eye trackers?

Despite early reports and the contemporary consensus on microsaccades as purely binocular phenomena, recent work has proposed not only the existence of monocular microsaccades, but also that they serve functional purposes. We take a critical look at the detection of monocular microsaccades from a signal perspective, using raw data and a state-of-the-art, video-based eye tracker. In agreement with

Clinical applications of acoustophoresis in blood based diagnostics

In this thesis, acoustofluidics has been used to process blood samples as a sample preparation step prior to biomarker detection. This is often required as the large amount of blood cells otherwise can interfere with the detection method. Acoustofluidics means moving particles or cells with acoustic forces within microfluidic channels. Ultrasound is used to create a standing wave between the chann

Severe insulin-resistant diabetes due to insulin antibodies associated with eosinophilia

A 66-year-old man with type 2 diabetes on hemodialysis treatment was admitted due to poor glycemic control. His serum insulin level and the 125I-insulin binding rate were extremely high with an increased eosinophil count, although he did not have an allergic reaction to insulin or an elevation of specific IgE for human insulin. A Scatchard analysis revealed that the patient’s insulin antibodies ha
