Protein Interactions Involving the Laminin G-type Domains of Vitamin K-dependent Protein S.

The studies described in this thesis focus on the involvement of the two laminin G-type domains of vitamin K-dependent protein S in various biological contexts. The G-type domains are located in the C-terminal sex-hormone-binding globulin (SHBG)-like region. In human plasma, the majority of protein S circulates in a high-affinity complex with the complement regulatory protein C4b-binding protein (

Time and frequency synchronization for OFDM using PN-sequence preambles

Fast and reliable time and frequency synchronization is crucial for packet-based orthogonal frequency division multiplex (OFDM) systems. In this paper we compare and analyze preambles for OFDM systems based on repeated OFDM data symbols or repeated short pseudonoise sequences (PN-sequences). We make an analytical evaluation for AWGN channels and simulate the performance in oneand two-tap Rayleigh

Detecting speculations, contrasts and conditionals in consumer reviews

A support vector classifier was compared to a lexicon-based approach for the task of detecting the stance categories speculation, contrast and conditional in English consumer reviews. Around 3,000 training instances were required to achieve a stable performance of an F-score of 90 for speculation. This outperformed the lexicon-based approach, for which an Fscore of just above 80 was achieved. The

Chiral perturbation theory at two loops and the measurement of V(us)

I give an overview of the calculations done in three-flavour Chiral perturbation theory at next-to-next-to-leading order with an emphasis on those relevant for an improvement in the accuracy of the measurement of Vus. It is pointed out that all needed low energy constants can be obtained from experiment via the scalar form-factor in Kl3 decays

Don’t rock the boat! On why some NGO policy proposals are more successful than others in the negotiations on CDM reform.

The clean development mechanism (CDM), outlined in Article 12 of the Kyoto Protocol (UNFCCC 1997) is one of the most debated and disputed provisions of the current climate regime. Developing and developed states, business as well as environmental NGOs all seem to be dissatisfied with the mechanism in its current shape, and a reform of the CDM is therefore high on the agenda of the climate negotiat

The Benefit of Using High-Performance Concrete for Prefabrication.

This article outlines a numerical study on the benefit of using High-Performance/Strength Concrete for fabrication of concrete elements. For this purpose a comparison is done between the cost of existing beams with normal strength concrete and optimized beams made of High-Performance/Strength Concrete. A background is given concerning the most essential properties of High-Performance/Strength Conc

Stoppa plågsamma gudstjänstförsök! Om liturgireformer

Liturgical reform is rampant today. The liturgical movement of the twentieth century has been succeeded by a period of uninformed tinkering with the liturgy by individual priests and ministers. The article identifies and criticizes five possible reasons for reforming (or simply changing) the liturgy.

Recent Work on Intrinsic Value

Recent Work on Intrinsic Value brings together for the first time many of the most important and influential writings on the topic of intrinsic value to have appeared in the last half-century. During this period, inquiry into the nature of intrinsic value has intensified to such an extent that at the moment it is one of the hottest topics in the field of theoretical ethics. The contributions to th

On Legal Complexity: Between Law in Books and Planning in Practice

This chapter addresses the difference between the intentions of the law and its application by using mobile telephony infrastructure development in Sweden as a case. Three possible pitfalls for policy management in general are concluded and analyzed. The first pitfall deals with legal complexity, which may be a result of piecemeal changes to the governing legal bodies over a longer time and is her

Unfoldment of self-reference in logic and in computer science

The paradoxes induced by unrestricted self-reference have been of interest since antiquity. In this paper the author approaches the interpretation of self-reference in natural languages from the perspective of linguist - using as insight the treatments of self-reference by Russel, Tarski, Kleene and Scott. The subject of self-reference is approached historically. The works of Russell are first dis

Mechanical Analysis of Lubrication and Lubricants

This thesis comprises three different topics within the field of tribology. First, design functions for analyses of slider bearings are developed. Second, a lubricant model applied to elastohydrodynamically lubricated (EHL) line contacts considering wall-slip is presented. Finally, an experimental apparatus for investigations of lubricants at high pressures is presented. The design of hydrodynami

Partners or Counterparts?: Student Involvement in Management and Quality Assurance at Lund University

There is an increasing demand from students and their organisations all over Europe for involvement in quality assurance. Today, this demand is met with a wide international understanding that student involvement is a key factor in quality assurance. Student representatives and organisations are involved in the development and execution of quality assurance processes in many higher education insti

Measurements Based Channel Characterization for Vehicle-to-Vehicle Communications at Merging Lanes on Highway

This paper presents results for vehicle-to-vehicle channel characterization based on measurements conducted for the merging lane scenarios on a highway. We present power delay profiles as well as channel gains and analyze important propagation mechanisms to see the impact of line-of-sight (LOS) and the antenna radiation pattern on the total received power. It is found that the absence of LOS and s
