Comparison of fatty acid profile in plasma phospholipids in women from Granada (southern Spain) and Malmo (southern Sweden)

We conducted a first pilot study on healthy women living in two countries with different dietary habits, Granada in the south of Spain and Malmo in the south of Sweden, in order to compare their levels of plasma phospholipid fatty acids, and to examine the relationship between the differences in food consumption. This study is part of a pilot study which is nested in the European Prospective Inves

Microbial BOD sensors for wastewater analysis

The field of biosensors for measuring biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) is reviewed. Particularly, BOD sensors constructed on the biofilm configuration are discussed regarding performance characteristics like linearity, response time, precision, agreement between BOD values obtained from the biosensors and the conventional 5-days test, as well as toxic resistance to various compounds and operational

Recessiveness and Dominance in Barley Mutants Deficient in Mg-Chelatase Subunit D, an AAA Protein Involved in Chlorophyll Biosynthesis.

Mg-chelatase catalyzes the insertion of Mg2+ into protoporphyrin IX at the first committed step of the chlorophyll biosynthetic pathway. It consists of three subunits: I, D, and H. The I subunit belongs to the AAA protein superfamily ( ATPases associated with various cellular activities) that is known to form hexameric ring structures in an ATP-dependant fashion. Dominant mutations in the I subuni

A randomised study in all cervical hip fractures Osteosynthesis with Hansson hook-pins versus AO-screws in 199 consecutive patients followed for two years

A consecutive series of patients with all types of cervical hip fracture (both undisplaced and displaced) were randomised to osteosynthesis with Hansson hook-pins (n = 98) or AO-screws (n = 101). Background parameters, fracture type and reduction of the fracture did not differ significantly between the groups. Fifty-seven percent of the patients were operated on within 6 h of admission to hospital

Comprehensive ventilation/perfusion SPECT

Lung scintigraphy is the primary tool for diagnostics of pulmonary embolism. A perfusion study is often complemented by a ventilation study. Intermediate probability scans are frequent. Our goal was to develop a fast method for tomographic ventilation and perfusion scintigraphy to improve the diagnostic value of lung scintigraphy. METHODS: SPECT was performed with a dual-head gamma camera. Acquisi

Relativistic ab initio calculations of oscillator strengths and hyperfine structure constants in TlII

We present accurate calculations of oscillator strengths and hyperfine structure splitting for a set of transitions in Tl II, and discuss how they can be used in stellar atmosphere models of chemically peculiar stars. The results are in good agreement with recent experiments. The predicted uncertainty for oscillator strengths ranges from about 5 to 20% and in most cases less than 10% for hyperfine

On Behavioral Model Identification

This paper presents theory andalgorithms for system identification suitable for the framework of behavioral system theory. An algorithm basedon algebraic system theory and realization theory (Ho-Kalman realization) in a subspace model identification framework is presented. The novel approach taken consists of the formulation of input-output data as an impulse response model and the subsequent appl

On the Characteristics of Fires in Tunnels

Popular Abstract in Swedish I avhandlingen presenteras viktiga fenomen i samband med bränder i tunnlar. Detta baseras både på experimentellt och teoretiskt arbete. Tyngdpunkten ligger på de brandförsök i fullskala som genomfördes 2003 i Runehamartunneln i Norge. Under dessa försök mättes brandeffektutvecklingen (HRR), temperaturer, gaskoncentrationer (O2, CO2, CO, HCN och H2O), gashastigheter, strImportant phenomena related to tunnel fires are presented including both experimental and theoretical work. The main focus is on the large-scale fire tests performed in 2003, in the Runehamar tunnel in Norway. During these tests heat release rate (HRR), temperatures, gas concentrations (O2, CO2, CO, HCN, and H2O), velocities, radiation, and smoke were measured. Four tests with a set-up simulating

Antioxidant capacity of bovine milk as assayed by spectrophotometric and amperometric methods

The total antioxidant capacity (TAC) of bovine milk, whey, and low-molecular-weight (LMW) fractions of whey was investigated using spectrophotometric methods including an ABTS-based method (reduction of the cation radical of 2,2′-azinobis(3-ethylenebenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)) and a FRAP method (reduction of Fe3+). Significant antioxidant capacity in milk and whey was demonstrated by the ABTS

MCDF calculations for the lowest excited states in the Zn-like sequence

We report on large scale ab initio calculation for the 4s(2) S-1(0)-4s4p P-1,3(0,1,2) transitions in the zinc-like sequence, using the multiconfiguration Dirac Fock ( MCDF) method. Our attention is focused on the spin-forbidden transition 4s(2) S-1(0)-4s4p P-3(1) and the hyperfine- induced ( HPF) transition 4s(2) S-1(0)-4s4p P-3(0) for ions between Z = 30 ( Zn) and Z = 47 ( Ag).
