The complete genome of Blastobotrys (Arxula) adeninivorans LS3 - A yeast of biotechnological interest

Background: The industrially important yeast Blastobotrys (Arxula) adeninivorans is an asexual hemiascomycete phylogenetically very distant from Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Its unusual metabolic flexibility allows it to use a wide range of carbon and nitrogen sources, while being thermotolerant, xerotolerant and osmotolerant. Results: The sequencing of strain LS3 revealed that the nuclear genome of

Cancer gene expression data analysis using rough based symmetrical clustering

Identification of cancer subtypes is the central goal in the cancer gene expression data analysis. Modified symmetry-based clustering is an unsupervised learning technique for detecting symmetrical convex or non-convex shaped clusters. To enable fast automatic clustering of cancer tissues (samples), in this chapter, the authors propose a rough set based hybrid approach for modified symmetry-based

Life cycle assessment of carbon flow through Harvested wood products

The paper discusses a life cycle model of wood products of Dalbergia sissoo from Saharanpur and Bijnor to calculate and trace the amount of carbon retained. A simulation model is built to trace the fate of carbon bound in the products produced in the year 2009 for a period of 200 years, until most of the carbon is released back into the atmosphere. The amount of carbon that enters the life cycle i

Searching Remote Homology with Spectral Clustering with Symmetry in Neighborhood Cluster Kernels

Remote homology detection among proteins utilizing only the unlabelled sequences is a central problem in comparative genomics. The existing cluster kernel methods based on neighborhoods and profiles and the Markov clustering algorithms are currently the most popular methods for protein family recognition. The deviation from random walks with inflation or dependency on hard threshold in similarity

The family based variability in protein family expansion

In this paper we propose an automatic protein family expansion approach for recruitment of new members among the protein-coding genes in newly sequenced genomes. The criteria for adding a new member to a family depends on the structure of each individual family versus being globally uniform. The detection of a threshold in the ROC space of all sorted iterative profile sets defines the alignments s

Pichia sorbitophila, an Interspecies Yeast Hybrid, Reveals Early Steps of Genome Resolution After Polyploidization

Polyploidization is an important process in the evolution of eukaryotic genomes, but ensuing molecular mechanisms remain to be clarified. Autopolyploidization or whole-genome duplication events frequently are resolved in resulting lineages by the loss of single genes from most duplicated pairs, causing transient gene dosage imbalance and accelerating speciation through meiotic infertility. Allopol

Efficient parallel algorithm for pixel classification in remote sensing imagery

An important approach for image classification is the clustering of pixels in the spectral domain. Fast detection of different land cover regions or clusters of arbitrarily varying shapes and sizes in satellite images presents a challenging task. In this article, an efficient scalable parallel clustering technique of multi-spectral remote sensing imagery using a recently developed point symmetry-b

Identification of conserved gene clusters in multiple genomes based on synteny and homology

Background: Uncovering the relationship between the conserved chromosomal segments and the functional relatedness of elements within these segments is an important question in computational genomics. We build upon the series of works on gene teams and homology teams. Results: Our primary contribution is a local sliding-window SYNS (SYNtenic teamS) algorithm that refines an existing family structure

Spectral clustering on neighborhood kernels with modified symmetry for remote homology detection

Remote homology detction among proteins in an unsupervised approach from sequences is an important problem in computational biology. The existing neighborhood cluster kernel methods and Markov clustering algorithms are most efficient for homolog detection. Yet they deviate from random walks with inflation or similarity depending on hard thresholds. Our spectral clustering approach with new combine

Evolutionary rough parallel multi-objective optimization algorithm

A hybrid unsupervised learning algorithm, which is termed as Parallel Rough-based Archived Multi-Objective Simulated Annealing (PARAMOSA), is proposed in this article. It comprises a judicious integration of the principles of the rough sets theory and the scalable distributed paradigm with the archived multi-objective simulated annealing approach. While the concept of boundary approximations of ro

The PanCareSurFup consortium : research and guidelines to improve lives for survivors of childhood cancer

Background: Second malignant neoplasms and cardiotoxicity are among the most serious and frequent adverse health outcomes experienced by childhood and adolescent cancer survivors (CCSs) and contribute significantly to their increased risk of premature mortality. Owing to differences in health-care systems, language and culture across the continent, Europe has had limited success in establishing mu

Bridging the gap : citizenship diversity and global innovation networks in small and medium size companies

Recent literature stresses the increasing importance of global innovation networks (GINs) as a mechanism to organize innovation across geographical space. This paper investigates why and to what extent citizenship diversity of the firm's employees relates to the engagement of small and medium size companies in GINs. Citizenship diversity provides knowledge about the institutional context of other

Neutron-deficient N≈126 Nuclei Produced in 238U Fragmentation : Population of High-spin States

The population of metastable states produced in relativistic-energy fragmentation of a 238U beam has been measured. For states with high angular momentum, I=17 and I=21.5, a higher population than expected has been observed, with the discrepancy increasing with angular momentum. By considering two sources for the angular momentum, related to single-particle and collective motions, a much improved

PanCareLIFE: The scientific basis for a European project to improve long-term care regarding fertility, ototoxicity and health-related quality of life after cancer occurring among children and adolescents

Aims: Survival after cancer diagnosed during childhood or adolescence continues to improve with new treatments and supportive therapies. Optimal long-term care requires that risks to vulnerable organs are clearly defined and translated into guidelines that are implemented into practice. PanCareLIFE is a pan-European consortium that addresses survivorship issues comprising fertility, hearing impair

Exotic Nuclear Studies Around and Below A=100

A RISING experiment with an aim to study exotic Cd nuclei was carried out at GSI-FRS facility. Some preliminary results from this experiment are presented here. In particular, the β decay of 96Cd to 96Ag revealed the existence of a high spin isomer predicted a few decades ago. In this context, the structures of both these nuclei are discussed. Shell model calculations using the Gross-Frenkel inter

Structure of N≥126 Nuclei Produced in Fragmentation of 238U

The nuclear structure of neutron-rich N≥126 nuclei have been investigated following their production via relativistic projectile fragmentation of a E/A=l GeV 238U beam on a Be target. The cocktail of secondary beam products were separated and identified using the GSI FRagment Separator (FRS). The nuclei of interest were implanted in a high-granularity active stopper detector set-up consisting of 6
