Studies on the Epidemiology and Outcome of Primary Systemic Vasculitis

Primary Systemic Vasculitides [PSV: Wegener's granulomatosis (WG), microscopic polyangiitis (MPA), Churg-Strauss syndrome (CSS) and polyarteritis nodosa (PAN)] are rare systemic diseases of unknown etiology; if untreated, they are associated with high morbidity and mortality rates. Changes in the classification and diagnostic improvements during the last decades have increased reported prevalence

Improving the Transient Performance of the Gas Turbine by Steam Injection during Frequency Dips

Single-shaft gas turbines are sensitive to frequency changes which might affect the grid stability during large frequency drops. This paper presents a new control system that uses steam injection as an auxiliary input to improve the transient performance of the gas turbine during frequency drops. Steam injection is beneficial because it reduces the peak temperature in the combustion chamber and au

Outcome after HSCT in Philadelphia chromosome positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia in Sweden: a population-based study

Even in the tyrosine kinase inhibitor era, allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is regarded as standard care for adult Philadelphia (Ph) positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). In this retrospective national study, we have reviewed the outcome after HSCT in Sweden for adult Ph-positive ALL between 2000 and 2009. In total, 51 patients with median age 42 (range 20-66) years

High-Current GaSb/InAs(Sb) Nanowire Tunnel Field-Effect Transistors

We present electrical characterization of GaSb/InAs(Sb) nanowire tunnel field-effect transistors. The broken band alignment of the GaSb/InAs(Sb) heterostructure is exploited to allow for interband tunneling without a barrier, leading to high ON-current levels. We report a maximum drive current of 310 μA/μm at Vds = 0.5 V. Devices with scaled gate oxides display transconductances up to gm = 250 mS/m

Profaning the sacred in leadership studies: a reading of Murakami's A Wild Sheep Chase

The leadership literature is full of stories of heroic self-sacrifice. Sacrificial leadership behaviour, some scholars conclude, is to be recommended. In this article we follow Keith Grint's conceptualization of leadership as necessarily pertaining to the sacred, butdrawing on Giorgio Agamben's notion of profanationwe highlight the need for organization scholars to profane the sacralizations embed

Comparison of PIV and PDA droplet velocity measurement techniques on two high-pressure water mist nozzles

The need for reliable measurement of droplet velocities and droplet size has increased with the more widespread use of water mist systems. Two optical measuring techniques have been investigated, Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and phase Doppler anemometry (PDA). Measurements have been performed on two high-pressure nozzles, a hollow cone nozzle and a full cone nozzle. Both methods performed well

Body part terms in Kammu

This article is a study of words for body parts in the Mon-Khmer language Kammu. It contains one descriptive part, presenting some 200 thematically ordered entries of words related to the body, with belonging elucidation and illustrations. In a more theoretical and comparative part, the data are used to relate Kammu to a wider debate concerning the semantic domain of body parts. Cross-linguistic s

Complement aberrations and autoantibodies to complement proteins in relation to disease mechanisms.

The complement system, a part of the innate immune system with several links to the adaptive immune system, plays an important role in the pathogenesis of many diseases. The purpose of this thesis was to document and clarify some of these mechanisms. The thesis is based on four papers (I-IV). (I and II) Autoantibodies to the C3 cleaving enzyme complex of the alternative pathway, C3 nephritic facto

Quantification of mRNA in single cells and modelling of RT-qPCR induced noise

Background: Gene expression has a strong stochastic element resulting in highly variable mRNA levels between individual cells, even in a seemingly homogeneous cell population. Access to fundamental information about cellular mechanisms, such as correlated gene expression, motivates measurements of multiple genes in individual cells. Quantitative reverse transcription PCR ( RT-qPCR) is the most acc

Weight loss in patients with head and neck cancer during and after conventional and accelerated radiotherapy

Background. Weight loss is common among patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (SCCHN) and is mainly due to tumor and treatment related factors. The aim of the present study was to evaluate weight loss in patients with SCCHN undergoing two different radiotherapy (RT) schedules. Material and methods. Nutritional data were analyzed from the ARTSCAN study, a controlled randomized

Beurling-Landau densities of weighted Fekete sets and correlation kernel estimates

Let Q be a suitable real function on C. An n-Fekete set corresponding to Q is a subset {z(n vertical bar) , . . . , z(nn)} of C which maximizes the expression Pi(n)(i infinity. In this note we prove that Fekete sets are, in a sense, maximally spread out with respect to the equilibrium measure. In general, our results apply only to a part of the Fekete set, which is at a certain distance away from

Late effects on hearing and balance after treatment for childhood cancer

During the last several decades, improvements in diagnostic skills and in the treatment of children with cancer have substantially increased the number of long term survivors of childhood cancer. Treatment of children with cytostatic drugs is known to create a range of late adverse effects. Among these are damage to certain structures of the inner ear and hearing impairment. In children, a hearing

Determination of the Propagation Constant From Single-Ended Line Test Data

This paper presents a numerical method, here, called recursive obliquely moving approximation (ROMA), for determining the propagation constant from single-ended line test measurements. The method is based on deriving an equation binding the input impedance of the open-ended transmission line and the characteristic impedance with the line propagation constant. The algorithm solving this equation re

Spatial distribution of spiders and epedaphic Collembola in an environmentally heterogeneous forest floor habitat

Describing the biotic and abiotic processes that are responsible for the formation of spatial patterns in predators and their prey is crucial for improving our understanding of food-web interactions. We studied the spatial distribution of four abundant spider species and three common groups of epedaphic Collembola prey in a beech-dominated (Fagus sylvatica) forest floor habitat and related the obs

Muscle strength in adolescent men and risk of cardiovascular disease events and mortality in middle age: a prospective cohort study

Background Ischemic heart disease and stroke are two severe types of cardiovascular disease (CVD), a major contributor to the global burden of disease. The preventive framework currently includes promotion of both adequate cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness. Although muscle fitness is established as an indicator of health, it is currently unknown whether muscle strength is associated with lat

Men modern evolutionsteori utvecklas kontinuerligt. Den darwinistiska evolutionsteorin med sina förgreningsmodeller förklarar mångfalden av levande organismer och deras anpassning till miljön. Moderna sammanslutningar som Tree

Somatic Mutations in Exocrine Pancreatic Tumors: Association with Patient Survival

KRAS mutations are major factors involved in initiation and maintenance of pancreatic tumors. The impact of different mutations on patient survival has not been clearly defined. We screened tumors from 171 pancreatic cancer patients for mutations in KRAS and CDKN2A genes. Mutations in KRAS were detected in 134 tumors, with 131 in codon 12 and only 3 in codon 61. The GGT>GAT (G12D) was the most fre
