Predictors of long-term cognitive outcome in Alzheimer's disease.

Introduction: The objective of this study was to describe the longitudinal cognitive outcome in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and analyze factors that affect the outcome, including the impact of different cholinesterase inhibitors (ChEI). Methods: In an open, three-year, nonrandomized, prospective, multicenter study, 843 patients were treated with donepezil, rivastigmine, or galantamine in a routine cl

Diagnostic and prognostic value of proteinuria in chronic renal diseases

To the extent that increased urinary protein excretion is an indicator of alterations of the glomerular capillary wall (GCW) and appearance of tubulointerstitial damage, proteinuria can be a good marker of the overall severity of the glomerular and tubulointerstitial damage, and therefore, the prognosis of glomerular diseases. Studies I, II, and III show that it is the type of proteinuria, rather

Bayesian Formulation of Image Patch Matching Using Cross-correlation

A classical solution for matching two image patches is to use the cross-correlation coefficient. This works well if there is a lot of structure within the patches, but not so well if the patches are close to uniform. This means that some patches are matched with more confidence than others. By estimating this uncertainty more weight can be put on the confident matches than those that are more unce

Experimental Study of Flameless Combustion in Gas Turbine Combustors

This paper presents experimental data on investigation of novel flameless combustors in application of gas turbine engines at atmospheric conditions. Flameless combustion is characterized by distributed flame and even temperature distribution under the conditions of high preheat air temperature and sufficient large amount of recirculating low oxygen concentration exhaust gas. Extremely low emissio

MAX-IV Design: Pushing the Envelope

The proposed MAX IV facility is meant as a successor to the existing MAX-lab. The accelerator part will consist of three storage rings, two new ones operated at 3 and 1.5 GeV respectively and the existing 700 MeV MAX III ring. The two new rings have identical lattices and are placed on top of each other. Both these rings have a very small emittance, 0.86 and 0.4 nm rad respectively, and offer sync

NOSQL based 3d city model management system

To manage increasingly complicated 3D city models, a framework based on NoSQL database is proposed in this paper. The framework supports import and export of 3D city model according to international standards such as CityGML, KML/COLLADA and X3D. We also suggest and implement 3D model analysis and visualization in the framework. For city model analysis, 3D geometry data and semantic information (s

Generalized Accelerated Gradient Methods for Distributed MPC Based on Dual Decomposition

We consider distributed model predictive control (DMPC) where a sparse centralized optimization problem without a terminal cost or a terminal constraint set is solved in distributed fashion. Distribution of the optimization algorithm is enabled by dual decomposition. Gradient methods are usually used to solve the dual problem resulting from dual decomposition. However, gradient methods are known f

Predicting seminal quality with artificial intelligence methods

Fertility rates have dramatically decreased in the last two decades, especially in men. It has been described that environmental factors, as well as life habits, may affect semen quality. Artificial intelligence techniques are now an emerging methodology as decision support systems in medicine. In this paper we compare three artificial intelligence techniques, decision trees, Multilayer Perceptron

Density of insect-pollinated grassland plants decreases with increasing surrounding land-use intensity.

Pollinator declines have raised concerns about the persistence of plant species that depend on insect pollination, in particular by bees, for their reproduction. The impact of pollinator declines remains unknown for species-rich plant communities found in temperate seminatural grasslands. We investigated effects of land-use intensity in the surrounding landscape on the distribution of plant traits

Similar response in male and female B10.RIII mice in a murine model of allergic airway inflammation.

BACKGROUND: Several reports have been published on the gender differences associated with allergies in mice. GOAL: In the present study we investigate the influence of gender on allergy response using a strain of mice, B10.RIII, which is commonly used in the collagen-induced arthritis murine model. METHODS: Both male and female B10.RIII young mice were immunized with OVA and challenged four times

Simple guidelines for efficient referral of soft-tissue sarcomas: a population-based evaluation of adherence to guidelines and referral patterns.

BACKGROUND: Optimal treatment of soft-tissue sarcoma requires multidisciplinary management at a sarcoma center. However, these rare tumors are often misinterpreted as benign and many are inadequately treated outside a sarcoma center, with an increased risk of local recurrence that often requires further extensive surgical treatment. To improve referral and centralization of soft-tissue sarcoma man

Use of ENCODE Resources to Characterize Novel Proteoforms and Missing Proteins in the Human Proteome

We describe integrated strategies that employ both translation of ENCODE data and major proteomic technology pillars to improve the identification of the missing proteins, protein isoforms, and PTMs. The results from proteoENCODEdb searches with experimental mass spectral data indicate that some novel splice forms detected at the transcript level are in fact translated to proteins. Our results pro

Soil fauna feeding activity in temperate grassland soils increases with legume and grass species richness

Edaphic fauna contributes to important ecosystem functions in grassland soils such as decomposition and nutrient mineralization. Since this functional role is likely to be altered by global change and associated shifts in plant communities, a thorough understanding of large scale drivers on below-ground processes independent of regional differences in soil type or climate is essential. We investig

Measurement of the low-mass Drell-Yan differential cross section at root s=7 TeV using the ATLAS detector

The differential cross section for the process Z/gamma* -> ll (l = e, mu) as a function of dilepton invariant mass is measured in pp collisions at root s = 7 TeV at the LHC using the ATLAS detector. The measurement is performed in the e and mu channels for invariant masses between 26 GeV and 66 GeV using an integrated luminosity of 1.6 fb(-1) collected in 2011 and these measurements are combined.

Induction of morphological changes in death-induced cancer cells monitored by holographic microscopy.

We are using the label-free technique of holographic microscopy to analyze cellular parameters including cell number, confluence, cellular volume and area directly in the cell culture environment. We show that death-induced cells can be distinguished from untreated counterparts by the use of holographic microscopy, and we demonstrate its capability for cell death assessment. Morphological analysis
