Predicting the dielectric constant-water content relationship using artificial neural networks
Accurate measurements of soil water content (theta) are important in various applications in hydrology and soil science. The time domain reflectometry (TDR) technique has been widely used for theta measurements during the last two decades. The TDR utilizes the apparent dielectric constant (K-s) for estimations of theta. The K-a-theta relationship has been described using both empirical and physica

Search for leptoquark bosons in ep collisions at HERA
A search for scalar and vector leptoquarks coupling to first generation fermions is performed using the e(+) p and e(-) p scattering data collected by the H1 experiment between 1994 and 2000. The data correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 117 pb(-1). No evidence for the direct or indirect production of such particles is found in data samples with a large transverse momentum final state el
Circulating soluble E-selectin in early rheumatoid arthritis: a prospective five year study
Background: Soluble E-selectin (sE-selectin) is a marker of activation of vascular endothelium. Objective: To examine serum levels of sE-selectin in a cohort of 85 patients with early rheumatoid arthritis (RA) followed up for five years. Methods: sE-selectin levels were assessed annually using an enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and related to simultaneously obtained clinical and laborato
Biocompatibility of a novel avidin-agarose adsorbent for extracorporeal removal of redundant radiopharmaceutical from the blood.
The use of monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) in cytotoxic conjugates (radionuclides, toxins, or drugs) for targeting tumor cells is restricted due to toxicity in vital organs. Through improved tumor targeting, it is possible to administer larger amounts of such labeled MAbs, thus improving the ability to eradicate tumor cells without increased normal organ toxicity. Extracorporeal affinity adsorption t
Checking the conformational stability of cystatin C and its L68Q variant by molecular dynamics studies: Why is the L68Q variant amyloidogenic?
Human L68Q cystatin C is one of the known human amyloidogenic proteins. In its native state it is a monomer with alpha/beta structure. Experimental evidence suggests that L68Q variant associates into dimeric intermediates and that the dimers subsequently self-assemble to form amyloid deposits and insoluble fibrils. Details of the pathway of L68Q mutant amyloid formation are unclear; however, diffe
Effects of solar radiation on the abiotic and bacterially mediated carbon flux in aquatic ecosystems
SlutlIn this Thesis, I studied some of the current aspects of organic matter photochemistry. I analyzed abiotic phototransformations of several types of dissolved (DOM) and particulate organic matter (POM). I also evaluated the effects of phototransformation of several types of DOM on bacteria. Finally, in a field experiment, I analyzed net effects of solar radiation on organic matter decomposition. DO
Affinity fractionation of lymphocytes using a monolithic cryogel.
A new type of continuous, supermacroporous, monolithic, cryogel affinity adsorbent was developed, allowing specific fractionation and separation of human peripheral blood lymphocytes in a chromatographic format. The affinity adsorbent was used to design a novel cell separation strategy, which was based on the interaction of protein A from Staphylococcus aureus with cells bearing IgG antibodies on
The effects of small roundabouts on emissions and fuel consumption: a case study
The effects of small roundabouts on emissions and fuel consumption were evaluated using the “car-following” method in a before/after study. The results showed that at a roundabout replacing a signalised junction, CO emissions decreased by 29%, NOx emissions by 21%, and fuel consumption by 28%. At roundabouts, replacing yield regulated junctions, CO emissions increased on average by 4%, NOx emissio

High-density lipoprotein concentrations increase after stopping smoking
Concentrations of plasma lipoproteins in 10 men who were habitual smokers were monitored for six weeks after they stopped smoking and related to changes in diet and body weight. The energy intake increased by 10% (p less than 0.05) owing to a higher consumption of carbohydrates and fat, and body weight increased by 2% (p less than 0.01). Plasma triglyceride, cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotei

Weyl product algebras and modulation spaces
We discuss algebraic properties of the Weyl product acting on modulation spaces. For a certain class of weight functions omega we prove that M-(omega)(p,q) is an algebra under the Weyl product if p epsilon [1, infinity] and 1

Heterogeneity of the blood group Ax allele: genetic recombination of common alleles can result in the Ax phenotype
The Ax phenotype is an important subgroup of the ABO blood group system. Its inheritance does not always follow Mendelian rules and recent studies suggested that different alleles can result in this phenotype. This suggestion has been explored by cloning and sequencing exons 6 and 7 of the ABO gene and the intervening intron from members of six unrelated families expressing the Ax phenotype. Two f
