Comparison of Riemann and Lebesque sampling for first order stochastic systems

The normal approach to digital control is to sample periodically in time. Using an analog of integration theory we can call this Riemann sampling. Lebesgue sampling or event based sampling is an alternative to Riemann sampling. It means that signals are sampled only when measurements pass certain limits. In this paper it is shown that Lebesgue sampling gives better performance for some simple syst

PREVENTION OF POSTSURGICAL ABDOMINAL ADHESIONS BY POLYPEPTIDES

De i denna avhandling ingåenPeritoneal adhesions develop after almost all abdominal surgical interventions and represent an important cause of postoperative intestinal obstruction, abdominal discomfort and infertility. Postoperative adhesions can potentially be reduced by using different antiadhesive agents. In the present study, we hypothesized that a combination of oppositely charged polypeptides could effectively decrease

Psychosocial stress in relation to blood pressure and cardivascular disease - epidemiological and genetic aspects

Psychosocial stress has been linked to both hypertension and cardiovascular disease (CVD), and hypertension has been proposed to be one mediator of the increased CVD risk in subjects reporting stress. Genetic susceptibility for blood pressure elevation in relation to stress has been proposed, but so far there is little evidence. We aimed to study the prospective CVD risk of chronic stress (Pap

Synthesis of decaline analogues of isovelleral

Decaline analogues of the bioactive fungal sesquiterpene (+)-isovelleral (1a), retaining the bicyclo[4,1,0]hept-2-en-1,2-dicarbaldehyde system, were prepared, and their cytotoxic and antimicrobial activities were compared with those of the natural product. While the two isomers (+/-)-2 and (+/-)-3 were as active as isovelleral (1a), the isomer (+/-)-4 was approximately 10 times less potent.

High-Resolution Infrared and Microwave Study of the n20 and n21 Levels near 300 cm-1 in 1,2,4-Triazine.

The gas phase far-IR spectrum of the small nu, Greek20 (A″, 367.88 cm−1) and small nu, Greek21 (A″, 311.28 cm−1) bands of 1,2,4-triazine, a five membered ring having the point group Cs, has been studied at a resolution ranging from 0.002 to 0.003 cm−1. From the MW spectrum 58 transitions in the small nu, Greek20 level and 64 in the small nu, Greek21 level have been assigned. The small nu, Greek20

Induction of operational tolerance to discordant dopaminergic porcine xenografts.

BACKGROUND: Porcine embryonic neural tissue transplanted intracerebrally could potentially relieve the symptoms of Parkinson's disease if the immune response toward the graft could be overcome. However, conventional immunosuppressive treatments have proven inefficient in preventing rejection. An alternative is blocking the costimulatory signals for lymphocyte activation. Treatment with cytotoxic T

Cloning, sequence analysis, and expression of a gene encoding an endoxylanase from Bacillus halodurans S7

The gene encoding an alkaline active xylanase of Bacillus halodurans S7, containing an open reading frame of 1188 nucleotides encoding 396 amino acids, was cloned and expressed in Escherchia coli. On the basis of sequence similarity, possible -10 and -35, ribosome binding, and transcription terminator regions were identified. Analysis of the deduced amino acid sequence revealed that the protein wa

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers at a solid waste incineration plant II: atmospheric deposition

In the second of two papers, the atmospheric polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) deposition (wet and dry) at a municipal solid waste incineration (MSW) plant with electronics recycling is compared with that at an industrial urban reference site (URS) producing asphalt and concrete. Results of BDE209 and SigmaPBDE excluding BDE209 as representatives of "new" vs. "old" PBDEs are presented. Volume

Mutations in the endosomal ESCRTIII-complex subunit CHMP2B in frontotemporal dementia

We have previously reported a large Danish pedigree with autosomal dominant frontotemporal dementia (FTD) linked to chromosome 3 (FTD3). Here we identify a mutation in CHMP2B, encoding a component of the endosomal ESCRTIII complex, and show that it results in aberrant mRNA splicing in tissue samples from affected members of this family. We also describe an additional missense mutation in an unrela

Outbildad personal i hemtjänsten utsätter vårdtagaren för risk. Bättre kunskaper i läkemedelshantering måste krävas

During the last few years the home care services have had to face an increased responsibility for medical tasks. A study in the city of Malmö in 1993, repeated in 1998, shows that 95% of the health care assistants are engaged in the administration of medication. The studies demonstrate that health care assistants have inadequate knowledge not only about medicines and their administration but also

Local cerebral blood flow in the rat during severe hypoglycemia, and in the recovery period following glucose injection

In order to assess the influence of severe hypoglycemia on local cerebral blood flow (1-CBF) artificially ventilated rats, maintained on 70% N2O, were injected with insulin to provide either an EEG pattern of slow-wave polyspikes, or cessation of spontaneous EEG activity for 5, 15 or 30 min ("coma"). In other animals, glucose was injected at the end of a 30 min period of "coma" and 1-CBF was measu

Mechanical response of wood perpendicular to grain when subjected to changes of humidity

This paper describes the deformations caused by stress and humidity interaction, mechano-sorption, in the cross grain directions of wood and the relaxation or accumulation of internal stresses caused by these deformations. Long-term tests on small clear specimens in cyclic climates with both tensile and compressive loads were carried out. The development of internal stresses in timber was measured

On acoustic particle and cell manipulation in microfluidic systems
