A genetic polymorphism in connexin 37 as a prognostic marker for atherosclerotic plaque development

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Atherosclerosis is a multifactorial disease, in part characterized by chronic inflammatory changes in the vessel wall and loss of normal physical and biochemical interactions between endothelial cells and smooth muscle cells. Previous studies [Hu J., Cotgreave IA. J Clin Invest; 99: 1-5] have provided molecular links between inflammation and myoendothelial communication

Delineating the specificity of an IgE-encoding transcriptome.

Background Although much is known about the reactivity of polyclonal populations of antibodies targeting the wide array of allergens produced by timothy (Phleum pratense) and other grass species, little is known about the finer details at the level of individual antibody specificities. Objective We sought to investigate the IgE repertoire as it occurs in a patient with grass pollen allergy. Meth

Phase II studies on docetaxel alone every third week, or weekly in combination with gemcitabine in patients with primary locally advanced, metastatic, or recurrent esophageal cancer

Background The purpose of these studies was to compare efficacy and toxicity of docetaxel alone with the combination of gemcitabine and docetaxel for treatment of metastatic esophageal carcinoma. Patients and methods These studies enrolled patients with histopathologically verified squamous cell carcinoma or adenocarcinoma of the esophagus or cardia. Between March 1997 and June 1999, 52 patients w

Upp och hoppa då, feminister

This article argues against lesbophobia in Swedish feminist politics and theory and opens up a perspective for feminist solidarity.

Bone mineral density assessed by quantitative ultrasound and dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. Normative data in Malmo, Sweden

We measured bone mineral density (BMD) in 128 men and 143 women, aged 22-90, by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) and quantitative ultrasound (QUS). We found reduced bone mineral density in relation to age as measured both by DEXA and QUS. There was a correlation between 0.28 and 0.52 in men and between 0.53 and 0.77 in women when comparing DEXA and QUS measurements. When including only pers

Preventative environmental strategies in the service sector

Denna avhandling förklarar hur förebyggande miljöskydd som ett strategPreventative environmental approaches (e.g. Cleaner Production and Pollution Prevention) have been successfully implemented in the manufacturing industry. They are, however, far from being fully adopted by all society actors. It has, for instance, not been fully embraced by the service sector. When this research project started, the initial question was whether it was possible to adopt experiences

Tissue transglutaminase autoantibodies in childhood celiac disease

Intoleransen mot gluten orsakas av en immunologisk reaktion mot tunntarmens slemhinna som efCeliac disease is a prevalent small bowel disease in children caused by permanent intolerance against gliadin, which is the alcohol-soluble fraction of the cereal protein gluten in wheat, rye and barley. Celiac disease is characterized by an inflammatory infiltrate of CD4+ T lymphocytes in the intestinal mucosa leading to damage of villous structure and loss of absorptive surface. As a consequence

Empirical Evaluations of Usage-Based Reading and Fault Content Estimation for Software Inspections

Empirical evaluations in software engineering are important in order to build a body of knowledge of methods that work in different environments. This thesis presents six empirical investigations of two techniques applied to software inspections, namely reading techniques and fault content estimation techniques. The first part of the thesis presents a series of experiments of a novel reading tech

Kernels and multiple windows for estimation of the Wigner-Ville spectrum of Gaussian locally stationary processes

This paper treats estimation of the Wigner-Ville spectrum (WVS) of Gaussian continuous-time stochastic processes using Cohen's class of time-frequency representations of random signals. We study the minimum mean square error estimation kernel for locally stationary processes in Silverman's sense, and two modifications where we first allow chirp multiplication and then allow nonnegative linear comb

Low recurrence rate after deep calf-vein thrombosis with 6 weeks of oral anticoagulation

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the recurrence rate after deep calf-vein thrombosis treated with 6 weeks of oral anticoagulation. DESIGN AND SUBJECTS: A 2 year follow-up of 126 consecutive patients admitted to the Department of Internal Medicine with venographically verified deep calf-vein thrombosis. RESULTS: One hundred and twenty-six patients were treated with warfarin for 6 weeks, 18 of them having ha

Growth, morbidity and mortality after chickenpox infection in young children in Guinea-Bissau

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether chickenpox in children below 2 years of age is associated with post-infection changes in growth, morbidity or mortality. METHODS: An outbreak of chickenpox was investigated in Guinea-Bissau. An examination, interview and anthropometry were performed 6 months after the epidemic for a group of children and matched controls whose weight had been measured at the time of t

Biodiversity at Linnaeus' birthplace in the parish of Stenbrohult, southern Sweden. 5. Butterflies and burnet moths.

We counted butterflies in almost all open grasslands in an area of 8000 hectare over five years (2001-2005) in the central part of the parish of Stenbrohult, southern Sweden (Fig. 1; 56 degrees 37' N, 14 degrees 11' O). This area is currently dominated by forests. Grasslands, mainly grazed by cattle and horses, only cover about 6 % of the area. The study area consisted of 18 farms, most ot them ar

Gene expression changes in the course of neural progenitor cell differentiation

The molecular changes underlying neural progenitor differentiation are essentially unknown. We applied cDNA microarrays with 13,627 clones to measure dynamic gene expression changes during the in vitro differentiation of neural progenitor cells that were isolated from the subventricular zone of postnatal day 7 mice and grown in vitro as neurospheres. In two experimental series in which we withdrew

Appetitive flight patterns of male Agrotis segetum moths over landscape scales

An analysis is presented of the first harmonic radar studies of pheromone-plume locating flights of male Agrotis segetum moths over distances of up to 500m. Upon release most moths flew in a direction having a downwind component. The first significant changes in flight orientations occur in the immediate vicinity of a pheromone source. Moths that were initially flying downwind change course and st
