Role of hexaminolevulinate-guided fluorescence cystoscopy in bladder cancer: critical analysis of the latest data and European guidance

Objective. Hexaminolevulinate (HAL) is an optical imaging agent used with fluorescence cystoscopy (FC) for the detection of non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). Guidelines from the European Association of Urology (EAU) and a recent, more detailed European expert consensus statement agree that HAL-FC has a role in improving detection of NMIBC and provide recommendations on situations for its

Study of W-boson polarisations and triple gauge boson couplings in the reaction e(+)e(-)-> W+W- at LEP 2

A determination of the single W spin density matrix (SDM) elements in the reaction e(+)e(-) -> W+W--> l nu q (q) over bar (l=e/mu) is reported at centre-of-mass energies between 189 and 209GeV. The data sample used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 520pb(-1) taken by DELPHI between 1998 and 2000. The single W SDM elements, rho(W +/-)(tau tau') (tau,tau'=+/- 1 or 0), are determined as a fu

Reproductive and Hormonal Factors, and Ovarian Cancer Risk for BRCA1 and BRCA2 Mutation Carriers: Results from the International BRCA1/2 Carrier Cohort Study

Background: Several reproductive and hormonal factors are known to be associated with ovarian cancer risk in the general population, including parity and oral contraceptive (00 use. However, their effect on ovarian cancer risk for BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutation carriers has only been investigated in a small number of studies. Methods: We used data on 2,281. BRCA1. carriers and 1,038 BRCA2 carriers from

The Columnar Lined Esophagus: aspects on the assessment of dysplasia and on the relationship with the esophageal submucosal glands

Columnar metaplasia, where columnar epithelium replaces the normal squamous epithelium in esophagus, is considered to be a precancerous condition in which the development of adenocarcinoma can be followed through various grades of dysplasia. The interpretation of these histological changes is subjective and suffers from considerable inter-observer variation among pathologists. In study I, we devis

Multiple Effects of Changes in Arctic Snow Cover

Snow cover plays a major role in the climate, hydrological and ecological systems of the Arctic and other regions through its influence on the surface energy balance (e.g. reflectivity), water balance (e.g. water storage and release), thermal regimes (e.g. insulation), vegetation and trace gas fluxes. Feedbacks to the climate system have global consequences. The livelihoods and well-being of Arcti

ScFv Anti-Heparan Sulfate Antibodies Unexpectedly Activate Endothelial and Cancer Cells through p38 MAPK: Implications for Antibody-Based Targeting of Heparan Sulfate Proteoglycans in Cancer.

Tumor development requires angiogenesis and anti-angiogenic therapies have been introduced in the treatment of cancer. In this context, heparan sulfate proteoglycans (HSPGs) emerge as interesting targets, owing to their function as co-receptors of major, pro-angiogenic factors. Accordingly, previous studies have suggested anti-tumor effects of heparin, i.e. over-sulfated HS, and various heparin mi

GaMnAs: Layers, Wires and Dots

Thin layers of GaMnAs ferromagnetic semiconductor grown by molecular beam epitaxy on GaAS(001) substrates were studied. To improve their magnetic properties the post-growth annealing procedures were applied, using the surface passivation layers of amorphous arsenic. This post-growth treatment effectively increases the ferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic phase transition temperature in GaMnAs, and provid

Multiple mechanisms of MYCN dysregulation in Wilms tumour.

Genomic gain of the proto-oncogene transcription factor gene MYCN is associated with poor prognosis in several childhood cancers. Here we present a comprehensive copy number analysis of MYCN in Wilms tumour (WT), demonstrating that gain of this gene is associated with anaplasia and with poorer relapse-free and overall survival, independent of histology. Using whole exome and gene-specific sequenci

Plasma phospholipid fatty acid concentrations and risk of gastric adenocarcinomas in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC-EURGAST)

Background: Epidemiologic data suggest that diet is a risk factor in the etiology of gastric cancer. However, the role of dietary fatty acids, a modifiable risk factor, remains relatively unexplored. Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the association of plasma phospholipid fatty acid concentrations, as biomarkers of exogenous and endogenously derived fatty acids, with the risk

Physiotherapy in a Danish private context - a social and ethical practice

Long-term Morbidity and Socioeconomic Outcome among Nordic Childhood Cancer Survivors

Survival after childhood cancer has improved dramatically during the past four decades, resulting in a five-year survival rate of 80% in children recently treated for cancer in the Nordic countries. However, these advances in treatment and survival has come at a price, and many survivors face significant treatment-induced sequelae, most of which only become clinically apparent many years after the

Towards Integrated Pest Management in Red Clover Seed Production

The development of integrated pest management is hampered by lack of information on how insect pest abundances relate to yield losses, and how pests are affected by control measures. In this study, we develop integrated pest management tactics for Apion spp. weevils (Coleoptera: Brentidae) in seed production of red clover, Trifolium pratense L. We tested a method to forecast pest damage, quantifie

Studies on Potency and breadth of HIV-1, HIV-2 and SIV neutralizing antibody responses

Popular Abstract in English Thirty years after the discovery of HIV, the AIDS epidemic is still with us. While the incidence is declining globally and access to anti-retroviral therapy for low- and middle-income countries is improving, the number of new HIV infections is still high. Despite stubborn efforts to design viral immunogens, an effective formulation for the induction of broad and potent Even though the relative contribution of neutralizing antibodies (Nab) to prevent progression to AIDS during HIV-1 infection is still unclear, the induction of broadly NAb directed against HIV-1 through vaccination is considered to represent an important goal for the development of HIV-1 vaccines. Factors contributing to the induction of NAb may include the strength and duration of antigenic stimu

Variation in host specificity and gene content in strains from genetically isolated lineages of the ectomycorrhizal fungus Paxillus involutus s. lat.

Ectomycorrhizal fungi are known to vary in host range. Some fungi can enter into symbiosis with multiple plant species, while others have restricted host ranges. The aim of this study was to examine variation in host specificity among strains from the basidiomycete Paxillus involutus s. lat. Recent studies have shown that this fungus consists of at least four genetically isolated lineages, phyloge

Inductive pointing device for tongue control system for computers and assistive devices

Experimental results for pointing tasks using a tongue control system are reported in this paper. Ten untrained subjects participated in the experiment. Both typing and pointing tasks were performed, in three short-term training sessions, in consecutive days, by each subject. The system provided a key pad (14 sensors) and a mouse pad (10 sensors with joystick functionality) whose placements were i

Intensive glucose therapy and clinical implications of recent data: a consensus statement from the Global Task Force on Glycaemic Control

Background: There is compelling evidence showing that achieving good glycaemic control reduces the risk of microvascular complications in people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Likewise, there is clear evidence to show that achieving good glycaemic control reduces the risk of macrovascular complications in type 1 diabetes. The UKPDS 10-year follow up suggests that good glycaemic control also redu

Rutinmässig rektalpalpation bör inte göras vid akut buk hos vuxnaA digital rectal examination (DRE) is standard practice in cases of acute abdomen in adult patients. We analyzed the evidence for this by a systematic literature search, and identified 16 relevant original studies. These studies showed that there is no evidence for a diagnostic value of DRE in adult patients with acute abdomen. We should stop doing routine DRE in adult cases of acute abdomen.

A Numerical Study of the Thermal Performance of Microchannel Heat Sinks with Multiple Length Bifurcation in Laminar Liquid Flow

A rectangular, straight microchannel heat sink with multiple length bifurcation has been designed, and the corresponding laminar flow and thermal performance have been investigated, numerically. Five different cases with multiple length bifurcation and various arrangements are investigated, as well as one case without bifurcations. All laminar fluid flow and surface heat transfer results are obtai

Outriggers Lost in the sea of Time: An Overlooked Aspect of Cultural Change and Conditions for Sustainable Development in Oceania

A series of comparative studies is suggested, focused on perceptions of outrigger canoes, and aimed at an increased understanding of the relationship between social relations, biodiversity, and sustainable development in Oceanic societies on small islands and in coastal areas undergoing rapid cultural change. After a critique of the recent notion that canoe-building in Polynesia developed as a res
