A molecule wired: Electrostatic investigation

We present calculations of ground state and excitation energies for ethene between metal electrodes. The model determines the effects of the electrodes by incorporating a heterogeneous and structured solvation model with the quantum mechanical description of the molecular system. The effects of the electrodes are of electrostatic origin and an external bias can be applied enabling a close connecti

Metabolism and force in hypertrophic smooth muscle from rat urinary bladder

Ten days of urinary outlet obstruction in the rat induced a threefold increase in bladder weight. Active force of control and hypertrophic bladder muscle strips was measured at varying PO2 levels after high-K+, carbachol, or electrical field stimulation. Highest force output was obtained with carbachol. Force per muscle area was lower in the hypertrophic muscles. The basal rates of oxygen consumpt

The disciplinary effect of the single market on Swedish firms

In the 1980s it became increasingly clear that the European Community market was still segmented by national borders because of non-tariff barriers to trade. A major objective of the Single Market Program in 1992 was to remove these barriers, thereby enforcing intra-union competition. In this paper, a panel of Swedish firm-level data is used to evaluate whether domestic market power has been curta

Coastline evolution at different time scales - examples from the Pomeranian Bight, southern Baltic Sea

Sedimentological and morphological changes on the upper and lower shoreface during relatively stable sea-level highstand conditions have been investigated in the Pomeranian Bight, southern Baltic Sea, at time scales ranging from storm events to millennia. In order to cover that variety of time scales, different methods have been applied. Seasonal variations in the morphology of the upper shoreface

MUC16 is produced in tracheal surface epithelium and submucosal glands and is present in secretions from normal human airway and cultured bronchial epithelial cells.

The gel-forming MUC5AC and MUC5B mucins have been identified as major components of human airway mucus but it is not known whether additional mucin species, possibly with other functions, are also present. MUC16 mucin is a well-known serum marker for ovarian cancer, but the molecule has also been found on the ocular surface and in cervical secretions suggesting that it may play a role on the norma

Influence of IGF-IR stimulation or blockade on proliferation of human renal cell carcinoma cell lines

Several tumors secrete insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) for autocrine growth stimulation and protection from apoptosis. However, the mechanisms responsible for tumor growth in renal cell carcinoma (RCC) are unclear. In this study the biological role of exogenous IGFs in two malignant RCC cells (Caki-2 and SK-RC-52) were investigated in vitro, and compared to the breast cancer cell line MCF-7. IG

Ultraweak light emission, free radicals, chilling and light sensitivity

Ultraweak light emission (UWLE) was measured from leaves of various chillingsensitive (Lycopersicon esculentum, Cucumis sativus and Phaseolus vulgaris) and tolerant (Pisum sativum and Vicia faba) plants after exposure to low (47C) temperature in the light. UWLE increased upon chilling treatment combined with illumination with 200 mol m2 s1 PAR in all plants, by about 30 in tolerant and by more tha

Mechanisms for reactive dc magnetron sputtering with different atomic masses - large area coatings of Al oxide and W oxide

Stoichiometric Al and W oxide films are prepared with high stability from the metallic state of the cathodes using conventional reactive DC magnetron sputtering on an industrial prototype scale. While for the Al, increased target power is a trivial way to increase growth rates, W oxide sputtering of optically functional films with sufficiently amorphous structure is severely limited by the effect

Färdmedelsvalet och valprocessen för lokala resor till regional tågtrafik : en analys med betoning på cykelns betydelse

PURPOSE: The dissertation addresses the choice of mode of transport, and the selection process, for local travel to regional rail service, with special emphasis on the significance of the bicycle. APPROACH TO THE PROBLEM AND METHODOLOGY: Choice of mode can be viewed as a 2-stage selection process in which different alternatives are rejected at different points in time. First there is a sorting amo

Särskilt fokuserar studien på hur prästen som teolog och själavårdare lösThe aim of this thesis is, using a comparative approach, to examine the pastoral function of the funeral homily as a faith interpretation and a life interpretation in funeral services in the Church of Sweden and in the diocese of Porvoo in Finland. In the Church of Sweden, represented here by the diocese of Växjö, the diocese of Strängnäs, the diocese of Härnösand, and the Evangelical Lutheran Chu

Execution-Time Properties of a Hybrid Controller

We are interested in gaining more knowledge about the execution-time requirements of real-time control tasks, and this paper presents a system for gathering statistics of the execution times of real-time tasks. The system allows real-time code to be instrumented in order to gather, analyze, and present execution-time statistics. It has been used to instrument an existing hybrid controller to gathe

Eosinophil lysis and free granules: an in vivo paradigm for cell activation and drug development

Release of cytotoxic granule proteins from activated eosinophil granules is considered to be a key pathogenic mechanism in eosinophilic diseases. Degenerated eosinophils and extracellular eosinophil granules have been repeatedly depicted. The present overview describes evidence that eosinophil lysis and distribution of free eosinophil granules (as opposed to 'classical degranulation') is an import
