Sustainable development through innovation diffusion via an entrepreneur in rural western Kenya : Progress and related challenges

This article presents the accomplishments and challenges of a rural sustainable development initiative in Nyanza Province, Kenya. Our focus is on the sale and financing of a simple technology — an improved cookstove — by a local entrepreneur. The theoretical basis of the research is innovation systems and (social) entrepreneurship. We first define the major challenges of the diffusion process enc

Auger Spectra of K+ L23 Excitations in Potassium Halides

The L23M23M23 Auger spectra of K+ L23 excitation in potassium halides are measured using photon excitation with different energies in the region of the K+ L23 absorption edge (around 300 eV). It is shown that the screening of the two 3p holes caused by the collapsed 3d electron of the K+ L23 exciton leads to a considerable shift (by about (6÷7) eV) of the K+ L23M23M23 Auger bands to higher energie

Synchrotron-radiation-excited soft-x-ray-fluorescence studies of Cu and Zn : On the validity of the sudden approximation

The L23 x-ray-emission spectra of Cu and Zn have been recorded using tunable-synchrotron-radiation-excited fluorescence spectroscopy. The satellite structure was studied in detail by varying the excitation energy from threshold to several hundred eV above. Strong satellites are observed which can unambiguously be associated with the decay of multiply excited states. This disproves recent claims of

The nature of an upscale nature : Bro Hof Slott Golf Club and the political ecology of high-end golf

Political ecology, as a perspective for exploring power-permeated socio-ecological transformations, has to date rarely engaged with tourism. Neither has tourism theory, with some notable exceptions, engaged much with political ecology. In this article, I argue that the resultant lack of dialogue between these signifies a loss for political ecology and tourism theory alike, but also that current co

Numerical methods for load and response prediction for use in acoustic fatigue

Acoustic fatigue can occur in structural elements of an aircraft exposed to very high sound pressures. To deal with acoustic fatigue, mainly empirical methods have been applied and often late in the design phase. Current design guidelines have three main limitations. First, they do not say anything about the load intensities. The load levels can be determined either experimentally or numerically. Revisiting the role of selection for the evolution of industries

Despite a growing reliance on evolutionary theories when explaining industrial dynamics, the mechanism of selection has received limited attention. Selection is often taken for granted and conceptualised as product market competition. We go beyond this view and distinguish between different types of selection—formal and social—and consider how these lead to different entities being selected. Forma

Ethnic packaging and gentrification : The case of four neighborhoods in Toronto

Urban theory has historically situated ethnic commercial strips as an organic extension of nearby ethnic residential enclaving. While this is still a useful way to frame such commercial spaces in many cities, this article argues that some areas of this sort function as a marketable branding mechanism (intended or not) to produce nearby residential gentrification. This article explores the influenc
