Reduction of trans-dichloro- and trans-dibromo-tetracyanoplatinate(IV) by L-methionine

Reduction of trans-[Pt(CN) 4 X 2 ] 2- (X = Cl or Br) [as model compounds for antitumour-active platinum(IV) pro-drugs] to [Pt(CN) 4 ] 2- by L-methionine, MeSR, has been studied at 25 °C in the range 0 < pH < 12 (X = Cl) and 0 < pH < 6 (X = Br) by use of stopped-flow spectrophotometry. The stoichiometry is [Pt IV ] : [MeSR] ≈ 1 : 1; the reaction products are methionine S-oxide and [Pt(CN) 4 ] 2- asReduction of trans-[Pt(CN)4 X2]2- (X = Cl or Br) as model compounds for antitumour-active platinum(IV) pro-drugs, to [Pt(CN)4]2- by L-methionine, MeSR, has been studied at 25 °C in the range 0 < pH < 12 (X = Cl) and 0 < pH < 6 (X = Br) by use of stopped-flow spectrophotometry. Kinetics and Mechanism for Reduction of Gold(III) Complexes by Dimethylsulfide

The reactions between trans-[Au(CN) 2 X 2 ] - (X = Cl or Br) and Me 2 S have been studied by conventional and high-pressure stopped-flow spectrophotometry in acidic aqueous solution containing 10% (w/w) methanol. The overall stoichiometry Au III ∶Me 2 S is 1∶(1.0 ± 0.1) in agreement with the reaction: trans-[Au(CN) 2 X 2 ] - + Me 2 S + H 2 O → [Au(CN) 2 ] - + Me 2 SO + 2H + + 2X - . Development of new characterization techniques for III-V nanowire devices

Strukturell sammanThis dissertation presents the new methods and techniques developed to investigate the properties of nanowires (NWs) and NW devices and the results obtained using these methods. The growth and characterization of NWs have become a large research field because NWs have been shown to improve the properties of many semiconductor applications such as transistors, solar cells, and light emitting diodes

Linear Free Energy Relationships for Complex Formation Reactions between Carboxylic Acids and Palladium(II). Equilibrium and High-Pressure Kinetics Study

SynopsisLinear free energy relationships based on equilibrium and kinetics measurements, including variable-temperature and high-pressure data, for complex formation reactions and aquations of square-planar palladium(II) complexes are derived and discussed. In particular, data for an extensive series of carboxylic acids of widely different basicities and steric properties, acting as nucleophiles tSynopsisLinear free energy relationships based on equilibrium and kinetics measurements, including variable-temperature and high-pressure data, for complex formation reactions and aquations of square-planar palladium(II) complexes are derived and discussed. Evaluation of the impact of a simple hand-washing and water-treatment intervention in rural health facilities on hygiene knowledge and reported behaviours of health workers and their clients, Nyanza Province, Kenya, 2008

Many clinics in rural western Kenya lack access to safe water and hand-washing facilities. To address this problem, in 2005 a programme was initiated to install water stations for hand washing and drinking water in 109 health facilities, train health workers on water treatment and hygiene, and motivate clients to adopt these practices. In 2008, we evaluated this intervention's impact by conducting

Exploring the opportunities and barriers of using prefabricated house components

To satisfy customers’ desires with a maintained efficiency of the production process is a challenge for many house construction companies. Houses are one-off projects with a production process characterized by variability and complexity that often lead to unpredicted costs. Prefabricated component solutions could possibly solve these issues through modularization, mass customization and delayed prTo satisfy customers’ desires with a maintained efficiency of the production process is a challenge for many house construction companies. On the development of gender in simultaneous and successive bilingual acquisition of French : Evidence for AOA and input effects

This study investigates the effects of Age of Onset of Acquisition (AOA) and the quality and quantity of input on the longitudinal development of gender in the acquisition of French by simultaneous (2L1) and successive bilingual children (cL2). There's an on-going debate regarding the main factors underlying linguistic development in bilingual children. Two independent variables, AOA and input, ha

Structure-Reactivity Correlations for Complex Formation Reactions between Square-Planar Metal Centers and Thioethers

SynopsisReactivity trends of thioethers toward square-planar complexes can be generally interpreted by use of an equation of the form: log k = γ + α∑σ* + βθ, where k denotes second-order rate constants, ∑σ* the sum of Taft constants for the thioether substituents, and θ the thioether cone angles. γ represents an intrinsic parameter for each substrate complex, while α is an electronic and β a steriSynopsisReactivity trends of thioethers toward square-planar complexes can be generally interpreted by use of an equation of the form: log k = γ + α∑σ* + βθ, where k denotes second-order rate constants, ∑σ* the sum of Taft constants for the thioether substituents, and θ the thioether cone angles. γ represents an intrinsic parameter for each substrate complex, while α is an electronic and β a steri

Snus use and risk of schizophrenia and non-affective psychosis

Background: Recent studies suggest a possible causal role for smoking in schizophrenia and psychosis. Most studies have focused on cigarette smoking, the most common form of tobacco use, but other forms of tobacco exist, including smokeless products such as Swedish snuff (or "snus"). Methods: We explored whether snus use is associated with schizophrenia and non-affective psychotic illness in a lar
