Expression of bovine calmodulin in tobacco plants confers faster germination on saline media
Calmodulin is a Ca2+-dependent regulatory protein in eukaryotic cells involved in a variety of intracellular activities. Many responses to abiotic stresses involve signaling by Ca2+ and Ca2+/calmodulin regulation, including water and salinity stress. To investigate how calmodulin affects germination on media with high concentrations of NaCl, transgenic tobacco plants expressing heterologous calmod
Neuron-specific TGF-beta signaling deficiency results in retinal detachment and cataracts in mice
We generated a mouse model (cKO) with a conditional deletion of TGF-beta signaling in the retinal neurons by crossing TGF-beta receptor I (TGF-beta RI) floxed mice with nestin-Cre mice. Almost all of the newborn cKO mice had retinal detachment at the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE)/photoreceptor layer junction of the neurosensory retina (NSR). The immunostaining for chondroitin-6-sulfate showed a

Surface resonance on the (6 root 3 x 6 root 3)-R30 degrees-reconstructed 5 ML Au on (root 3 x root 3)-R30 degrees-4H-SiC(0001)
In this paper we present evidence for a surface resonance on the (6v root 3 x 6 root 3)-R30 degrees-reconstruction obtained on 5 monolayers (ML) of An deposited on the (root 3 x root 3)-R30 degrees-4H-SiC(0001) and subsequently annealed. We use synchrotron radiation-based angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy to show that this resonance has no k(parallel to)-dispersion, but a parabolic-like ki

Deras agerande mot baptisterna i landets södra delar blir i denDuring the 1850's, Baptism appeared as the first real free church movement in Sweden. It distanced itself completely from normal church life and therefore came into conflict with society's religious rules. Ecclesiastical and temporal authorities regarded Baptism as erroneous and social disruptive. In the present treatise, their actions against the Baptists in the southern parts of the country beco

Nutritional status among patients with hip fracture in relation to pressure ulcers.
Background & aims Patients with a hip fracture often have a poor nutritional status that is associated with increased risk of complications, morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of an improved care intervention in relation to nutritional status and pressure ulcers. An intervention of best practices for patients with hip fracture was introduced, using t
Structure of ribosomal protein TL5 complexed with RNA provides new insights into the CTC family of stress proteins
The crystal structure of Thermus thermophilus ribosomal protein TL5 in complex with a fragment of Escherichia coli 5S rRNA has been determined at 2.3 Å resolution. The protein consists of two domains. The structure of the N-terminal domain is close to the structure of E. coli ribosomal protein L25, but the C-terminal domain represents a new fold composed of seven -strands connected by long loops.
Allocation of plant carbon to foraging and storage in arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi
Foraging strategies, the cost-benefit associated with the search for new resources, have only begun to be explored in arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). We show the use of C-13-labelling, via shoot photosynthesis, of the 16: 1omega5 fatty acid biomarker (the dominant and rather specific fatty acid in AMF storage lipids) to study the immediate patterns of carbon allocation to fungal lipids in resp

Inter- and intraspecific trait compensation of defence mechanisms in freshwater snails
Trait compensation occurs when mechanically independent adaptations are negatively correlated. Here, we report the first study to demonstrate trait compensation in predator-defence adaptations across several species. Freshwater pulmonate snails exposed experimentally to predation chemical cues from fishes and crushed conspecifics showed clear interspecific differences in their behavioural avoidanc
Activation of the neutrophil nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate oxidase by galectin-1
Galectins are a group of lactose-binding proteins widely distributed in nature. Twelve mammalian galectins have so far been identified, but their functions are to a large extent unknown. In this work we study galectin-1 in its interaction with human neutrophils, with regard to both cell surface binding and activation of the superoxide-producing NADPH-oxidase. We show that galectin-1 is able to act
Huvudsakligen har källmaterial från det i DDR styrande kommunistpartSince the early 1950’s the foreign policy of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) towards Sweden and the other Western European states was dominated by a striving for diplomatic recognition. This thesis examines that striving through an analysis of the East German-Swedish relations from 1949 until 1972. The main focus is on the years 1954-1972. The thesis draws mainly on East German archival mater
Resonant photoemission of N2O on Ir(110)
The adsorption of N2O on Ir(110) was investigated with high-resolution resonant photoemission at 135 K. The results obtained show evidence of molecular adsorption of N2O, along with some dissociation. It is found that the nitrogen photoemission spectra measured at the terminal and central nitrogen energy positions of the N2O/Ir(110) system are equivalent to those of N2O in the gas phase. In contra
Contractile and cytoskeletal proteins in smooth muscle during hypertrophy and its reversal
Hypertrophy of rat urinary bladder smooth muscle was induced by partial urethral obstruction. Bladder weight increased from 70 to 240 mg after 10 days and to 700 mg after 7 wk. Removal of the obstruction after 10 days caused a regression of bladder weight to 130 mg. The relative volume of smooth muscle in the bladder wall increased during hypertrophy. The concentration of myosin in the smooth musc
Intramolecular Electron Transfer from Manganese(II) Coordinatively Linked to a Photogenerated Ru(III)-Polypyridine Complex: A Kinetic Analysis
For further investigations in the field of artificial photosynthesis, a model compound, 1, has been developed to mimic the electron-transfer steps from the manganese cluster to P680+ in photosystem II. In this model compound the photosensitizer ruthenium(II)-trisbipyridyl was linked to a manganese(II) ion through a bridging ligand. Photoexcitation of 1 in the presence of the electron acceptor meth
Modelling of Solid Oxide Fuel Cells Applied to the Analysis of Integrated Systems with Gas Turbines
Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), working at high temperatures with an incomplete fuel oxidation process, have become an interesting candidate for combination with conventional power generation technology, such as gas turbines, in order to develop power plants that are both functional and efficient. An absolute condition for successful analysis and optimisation of such plants is the existence of rel
