Down-regulation of the strawberry Bet v 1-homologous allergen in concert with the flavonoid biosynthesis pathway in colorless strawberry mutant
Proteomic screening of strawberry (Fragaria ananassa) yielded a 58% success rate in protein identification in spite of the fact that no genomic sequence is available for this species. This was achieved by a combination of MALDI-MS/MS de novo sequencing of double-derivatized peptides and indel-tolerant searching against local protein databases built on both EST and full-length nucleotide sequences.
Enhanced benefit of increasing interferon beta-1a dose and frequency in relapsing multiple sclerosis - The EVIDENCE study
Background: The EVIDENCE (Evidence of Interferon Dose-Response: European North American Comparative Efficacy) Study demonstrated that patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) who initiate interferon beta-la therapy with 44 μ g 3 times weekly (TIW) were less likely to have a relapse or activity on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) compared with those who initiate therapy at a dosage of 30 μ g 1 time we
Sex and muscle structural lipids in obese subjects - an impact on insulin action?
Background Long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (LCPUFA) especially the n-3-FA of skeletal muscle phospholipids may facilitate insulin action, whereas saturated and trans-FA act oppositely. Community studies show that non-diabetic weight matched obese men and women display similar insulin resistance, despite the fact that an android fat distribution is detrimental to insulin action. The increased
Effects of carbon substrate enrichment and DOC concentration on biodegradation of PAHs in soil
Aims: Two common reasons to explain slow environmental biodegradation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), namely lack of appropriate carbon sources for microbial growth and limited bioavailability of PAHs, were tested in a laboratory bioassay using a creosote-contaminated soil. Methods and Results: The soil, containing a total of 8 mg g(-1) of 16 PAHs, was sieved and incubated in bottles f
THE COST-EFFECTIVENESS OF ADJUNCTIVE TREATMENT WITH LACOSAMIDE IN PATIENTS WITH UNCONTROLLED PARTIAL EPILEPSY
Anti-Fas mAb-induced apoptosis and cytolysis of airway tissue eosinophils aggravates rather than resolves established inflammation.
Local Smoothing for the Backscattering Transform
An analysis of the backscattering data for the Schrodinger operator in odd dimensions n3 motivates the introduction of the backscattering transform [image omitted]. This is an entire analytic mapping and we write [image omitted] where BNv is the Nth order term in the power series expansion at v=0. In this paper we study estimates for BNv in H(s) spaces, and prove that Bv is entire analytic in vH(s
Formation of a liquid crystalline phase from phosphatidylcholine at the oil-aqueous interface
Adsorption of phospholipid (1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphatidylcholine) and formation of a surface phase at the oil-water interface has been followed by using ellipsometry. The properties of the interfacial phase were found to depend strongly on whether phospholipid was added to the oil phase or to the aqueous phase as liposomal structures. In the latter case a monolayer formed, while if the ph
Rational design and purification of human Bruton's tyrosine kinase SH3-SH2 protein for structure-function studies
Bruton's tyrosine kinase (Btk) is a cytoplasmic protein tyrosine kinase consisting of N-terminal pleck-strin homology (PH) domain followed by Tec homology (TH) domain, Src homology 3 and 2 (SH3 and SH2) domains, and a C-terminal kinase domain. Mutations in the human BTK gene cause the severe immunodeficiency disease X-linked agammaglobulinemia (XLA). The structural and functional basis of several
Synthesis of Dihalo-Substituted Analogues of Tröger’s Base from ortho- and meta-Substituted Anilines.
For the first time, ortho- and meta-halo-substituted anilines were successfully condensed with formaldehyde to dihalo-substituted analogues of Trögers base. By using paraformaldehyde and TFA, yields of 2-85% of these potential supramolecular building blocks were obtained. Even the inconceivable achievement of condensing anilines unsubstituted in para-position to analogues of Trögers base was succe

Oral mucosal microvascular network abnormalities in de novo mutation achondroplasia
Approximately 90% of achondroplasia (ACH) cases are the result of a de novo mutation, with no phenotypical markers for the unaffected ACH parents being known to date. Here, the hypothesis of the presence of an oral mucosal microvascular abnormality in ACH children and unaffected ACH parents was tested. Two-dimensional vascular network geometry was analyzed in 15 children with sporadic ACH, 30 unaf
Accuracy of advanced versus strictly conventional 12-lead ECG for detection and screening of coronary artery disease, left ventricular hypertrophy and left ventricular systolic dysfunction
Background: Resting conventional 12-lead ECG has low sensitivity for detection of coronary artery disease (CAD) and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and low positive predictive value (PPV) for prediction of left ventricular systolic dysfunction (LVSD). We hypothesized that a similar to 5-min resting 12-lead advanced ECG test ("A-ECG") that combined results from both the advanced and conventional
Detection of neutron clusters
A new approach to the production and detection of bound neutron clusters is presented. The technique is based on the breakup of beams of very neutron-rich nuclei and the subsequent detection of the recoiling proton in a liquid scintillator. The method has been tested in the breakup of intermediate energy (30–50 MeV/nucleon) 11Li, 14Be, and 15B beams. Some six events were observed that exhibit the

Primary seminal vesicle carcinoma detected at transurethral resection of prostate
We present a case of primary seminal vesicle carcinoma detected at transurethral resection. The clinical presentation, radiologic findings, and pathologic features of these tumors are reviewed. Grossly, seminal vesicle carcinoma is poorly circumscribed and solid or solid/cystic and may be misinterpreted as an abscess or hemorrhage on radiologic examination. Although a definitive diagnosis often ca
An excess of chromosome 1 breakpoints in male infertility.
In a search for potential infertility loci, which might be revealed by clustering of chromosomal breakpoints, we compiled 464 infertile males with a balanced rearrangement from Mendelian Cytogenetics Network database (MCNdb) and compared their karyotypes with those of a Danish nation-wide cohort. We excluded Robertsonian translocations, rearrangements involving sex chromosomes and common variants.
On the numerical evaluation of elastostatic fields in locally isotropic two-dimensional composites
We present a fast algorithm for the calculation of elastostatic fields in locally isotropic composites. The method uses an integral equation approach due to Sherman, combined with the fast multipole method and an adaptive quadrature technique. Accurate solutions can be obtained with inclusions of arbitrary shape at a cost roughly proportional to the number of points needed to resolve the interface
