Photoconversion of chlorophylls in higher-plant CP43 characterized by persistent spectral hole burning at 1.7 K.
The chorophyll-protein complex CP43 is a proximal-antenna subunit important for excitation energy transfers from peripheral light-harvesting antenna to the Photosystem II (PSII) reaction centre. We report persistent spectral hole burning at 1.7 K in the Qy(0,0) origin and Qy(1,0) vibrational satellite bands of chorophyll a (chl a) in CP43 isolated from higher plants. The isolated CP43 is known to
Neural cell adhesion molecule-deficient beta-cell tumorigenesis results in diminished extracellular matrix molecule expression and tumour cell-matrix adhesion
To understand by which mechanism neural cell adhesion molecule (N-CAM) limits tumour cell disaggregation and dissemination, we searched for potential downstream genes of N-CAM during tumour cell progression by gene expression profiling. Here, we show that N-CAM- deficient - cell tumorigenesis is associated with changes in the expression of genes involved in cell-matrix adhesion and cytoskeletal dy
A secret agent in the middle?
An examination of the needs of parents of hospitalized children: comparing parents' and staff's perceptions.
The needs of parents of hospitalized children have received some attention in the health literature, but few studies have compared parents' perceptions of needs with staff's ideas about parents' needs. The aim of this study was to examine differences between the perceptions of the needs of parents of hospitalized children held by staff - nurses, doctors and allied health staff, and parents in a 15
Rapid and convenient determination of oxalic acid employing a novel oxalate biosensor based on oxalate oxidase and SIRE technology
A new method for rapid determination of oxalic acid was developed using oxalate oxidase and a biosensor based on SIRE (sensors based on injection of the recognition element) technology. The method was selective, simple, fast, and cheap compared with other present detection systems for oxalate. The total analysis time for each assay was 2-9 min. A linear range was observed between 0 and 5 mM when t
Some probability models for diagnosing neurogenic disorders
Healthy human skeletal muscles are composed of two distinguishable types of fibre, apparently randomly arranged within fascicles (bundles of fibres surrounded by connective tissue). Large groups of fibres of the same type indicate a neurogenic muscle disorder. An objective method for detecting nonrandom arrangements of fibres could improve the diagnosis of such disorders, particularly at an early

This thesis concerns the development of negation in the Italian L2 of a group of Swedish adults who live in Italy and acquire the language by formal and spontaneous learning. Various negative expressions and the verbal system were studied in a longitudinal analysis of a corpus with 29 recordings of seven subjects. The recordings consist mainly of spontaneous dialogue. While the development of the
Optimal age for preventing osteoporosis after menopause depends on effects of stopping treatment
The aim of this study was to model the effect of short (3 year) treatments for osteoporosis at different times after menopause on the risk of osteoporotic fracture and to assess the impact of strategies to target high-risk individuals. Treatment efficacy for hip, proximal forearm, shoulder, and spine fracture were computed from the relationship between bone mineral density (BMD) and fracture in wo
Human papillomavirus subtypes are not uncommon.
While both variants and types of human papillomavirus (HPV) are common, subtypes (2-10% sequence divergence in the L1 gene) have been considered to be rare. We searched GenBank and in-house databases using a 440 nt L1 fragment and identified 7, 30 and 10 subtypes/putative subtypes in the HPV genera Alpha, Beta and Gamma, respectively. The number of types/putative types in each genus was 54, 58 and
Geographical variation in incidence of prostate cancer in Sweden - Survey from the National Prostate Cancer Register
Objective. To investigate the geographical variation in prostate cancer incidence in Sweden, in particular the incidences of screening-detected tumours and curative treatment of prostate cancer. Material and methods. Data were retrieved from the National Prostate Cancer Register of Sweden for all cases of prostate cancer diagnosed in the year 2000-01. There were a total of 14 376 cases of prostate

Portable digital clock generator for digital signal processing applications
A fully integrated clock generator with behaviour similar to a PLL is proposed. A free-running ring oscillator is used as internal clock and the output clock is generated using two counters. The clock generator is described in synthesisable VHDL-code and can therefore easily be made from standard cells found in any commercial standard CMOS cell library.
Role of cultivation media in the development of yeast strains for large scale industrial use
The composition of cultivation media in relation to strain development for industrial application is reviewed. Heterologous protein production and pentose utilization by Saccharomyces cerevisiae are used to illustrate the influence of media composition at different stages of strain construction and strain development. The effects of complex, defined and industrial media are compared. Auxotrophic s

Electrocochleographic and audiometric evaluation of hypobaric effect in Meniere's disease
OBJECTIVES: To elucidate the effects of hypobaric pressure on cochlear hydrodynamics in patents with well-defined Meniere's disease. DESIGN: Sixteen patients were consecutively selected. Elevated hearing threshold levels and pathological transtympanal electrocochleography (tt-ECOG) were confirmed at the day of trial. The patients were exposed to repeated episodes of hypobaric pressure in a pressur

Geographic variations in possible risk factors for severe cardiac malformations
The aim of this study was to investigate various putative risk factors in a county in Sweden, described as having a 28% increased prevalence of cardiovascular malformations, and to compare them with the risk factors in two reference counties. Women giving birth in the studied counties differed in age and parity distribution, smoking, and educational level but these differences could not explain th
Vertical distribution of major, minor, and rare elements in a Haplic Podzol
Total and 0.2 M HCl-soluble concentrations of 44 mineral elements were studied in four profiles (0-110 cm) of a Haplic Podzol, developed from a 13,000-14,000-year-old quartzite-gneiss moraine deposit in south Sweden. Depending on element and soil fraction of the element considered, concentration maxima occurred in different horizons in the soil. The E horizon was impoverished in HCl-soluble fracti
