Molecularly imprinted materials: Towards the next generation

This brief overview summarizes some recent developments from our Center for Molecular Imprinting related to the topic of this symposium. After a short presentation of the principle of molecular imprinting and recognition, the use of different materials including hybrids for the formation of the host will be discussed, followed by examples given of different formats used such as small polymer beads

Effects of MgSO4 and glucose, insulin and potassium (GIK) on atrial conduction during the first 12 hours after DC-conversion of chronic atrial fibrillation

OBJECTIVE: To investigate changes in atrial conduction induced by MgSO4 and glucose, insulin and potassium (GIK) during the first 12-h period of sinus rhythm after successful DC-conversion of chronic atrial fibrillation (CAF). METHODS: Signal-averaged P-wave duration, QRS-duration and PQ-time were recorded in 20 patients who were randomly assigned to control or intervention. Ten patients received

Shape and duration of clicks in modulated FM transmission

Slepian model is derived for the shape of dicks in modulated FM transmission. The modulated signal may be a deterministic periodic function or a stationary stochastic process, not necessarily Gaussian. To describe the clicks one first derives the stochastic properties of noise and signal at the clicks. (For a periodic signal this amounts to giving the relative number of clicks in any given part of

An Algorithm for Phase-Space Detection of the P Characteristic Points

A new algorithm, based on embedding phase space, to detect the P-wave characteristic points of an ECG signal is reported in this paper. The multi-lead ECG is transformed into points of an embedding phase space where similar ECG morphologies are converted into phase space points that are close using some distance measure. The algorithm is robust with respect to the type of selected characteristic p

Wobbling phonon excitations, coexisting with normal deformed structures in Lu-163

Wobbling is a rotational mode unique to a triaxial body. The Lu-Hf isotopes with N similar to 94 at high spin provide a possible region of nuclei with pronounced triaxiality. We have investigated Lu-163 through the fusion-evaporation reaction La-139(Si-29,5n)Lu-163 with a beam energy of 152 MeV. Three excited bands decaying into the known, presumably triaxial, superdeformed (TSD) band built on the

Evidence that Hy-RBCs express weak Jo(a) antigen

BACKGROUND: RBCs of the Hy- phenotype have, in the past, been typed as Gy(a+(w)), Hy-, Jo(a-), and RBCs with the Jo(a-) phenotype type Gy(a+), Hy-(w), and Jo(a-). Anti-Hy and anti-Jo(a) are difficult to identify mainly because appropriate reagent R6Cs are poorly characterized. Historically, anti-Jo(a) has not reacted with RBCs with either phenotype. This report describes a case of an anti-Jo(a) th

Comparison of three expression systems for heterologous xylanase production by S-cerevisiae in defined medium

The influence of the auxotrophic deficiencies of the host strain and expression vector selection on the production of a heterologous protein was investigated. Heterologous xylanase production by two prototrophic S. cerevisiae transformants, containing either a plasmid-based, YEp-type expression system or an integrative, YIp-type expression system, were compared with production by an auxotrophic tr

Male-produced sex pheromone in Tribolium confusum: Behaviour and investigation of pheromone production locations

It is generally accepted that mating in flour beetles of the genus Tribolium is mediated by a male-produced aggregation pheromone. The pheromone production site in T. castaneum is believed to be glands on the ventral side of the femur. Behavioural experiments with the confused flour beetle T. confusum were conducted using extracts of beetles and different body parts as well as live beetles to inve

Generation of hexahydrophthalic anhydride atmospheres in a controlled human-use test chamber

A method for generating controlled atmospheres of hexahydrophthalic anhydride (HHPA) in an 8 m3 exposure chamber was developed. The permeation principle was used for gaseous HHPA generation. HHPA concentration was monitored by sampling on XAD-2 tubes and by a Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer using the partial least-square quantitative method. The repeatability of the FTIR was 5%, the

Ultraviolet radiation and air contamination during total hip replacement

Ultraviolet (uv) radiation of the operating room was assessed bacteriologically in an open randomized study of 30 total hip procedures. Volumetric air-sampling demonstrated that the number of colony forming units (cfu m-3) were significantly reduced (P less than 0.001) by uv light, both close to the wound and in the periphery of the operating room. No adverse effects of the uv-irradiation were obs

Rate of over-diagnosis of breast cancer 15 years after end of Malmö mammographic screening trial: follow-up study.

Objective To evaluate the rate of over-diagnosis of breast cancer 15 years after the end of the Malmo mammographic screening trial. Design Follow-up Study. Setting Malmo, Sweden. Subjects 42 283 women aged 45-69 years at randomisation. Interventions Screening for breast cancer with mammography or not (controls). Screening was offered at end of randomisation design to both groups aged 45-54 at rand

Lactate dehydrogenase activity and isoform distribution in the rat urinary bladder: effects of outlet obstruction and its removal

The rat urinary bladder responded to infravesical obstruction by an increased weight. The weight began to increase after 3 days of obstruction. After 10 days the weight gain had become significant, but increased further with time. At 90 days the bladders weighed 12 times the initial weight. Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activity per unit bladder weight increased with the duration of the obstruction.

Search for fermiophobic Higgs bosons in final states with photons at LEP 2

Higgs boson production with subsequent decay to photons was searched for in the data collected by the DELPHI detector at centre-of-mass energies between 183 GeV and 209 GeV, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of nearly 650 pb(-1). No evidence for a signal was found, and limits were set on h(0)Z(0) and h(0)A(0) production with h(0) decay to photons. These results were used to exclude re

Mellan det förflutna och framtiden : Den sandinistiska revolutionen i Nicaragua

The theme throughout this book is the buildning up of a new societal structure and the conflicts encompassed in such a project. I discuss the societal changes in Sandinista Nicaragua by way of placing the revolution in a historic, political, and social context. Throughout the work process it became increasingly clear that the conflicts of the FSLN were in principal due to two factors. First, the F
