Ethanol from Softwood - Techno-Economic Evaluation for Development of the Enzymatic Process

Popular Abstract in Swedish Etanol som produceras från förnyelsebara råvaror kan ersätta fossila bränslen som t.ex. bensin och diesel. Denna avhandling behandlar den enzymatiska processen för etanolproduktion från barrträd. Baserat på datorprogrammen Aspen Plus och Icarus Process Evaluator har ett verktyg för tekniska och ekonomiska beräkningar tagits fram i vilket hela processen, från trä till etEthanol produced from renewable resources can be used to replace fossil fuels such as gasoline and diesel. This thesis deals with the development of the enzymatic process used for ethanol production from softwood. A techno-economic tool, based on Aspen Plus and Icarus Process Evaluator, was developed in which the whole process, from raw material to ethanol, was studied and critical process paramet

At present, when economy and environment receive high priority, the ideal anaesthesia system with inhalation anaesthetics is a closed circle system in which only the gases which the patient consumes or produces are replaced or eliminated. Low-flow (LF) anaesthesia in which the fresh gas flow which is employed in a closed system, provides a stable system compares with closed anaesthesia systems. Co

Low serum concentration of sulfatide and presence of sulfated lactosylceramid are associated with Type 2 diabetes. The Skaraborg Project

Aims The glycosphingolipid sulfatide (sulfated galactosyl-ceramide) increases exocytosis of beta-cell secretory granules, activates K-ATP-channels and is thereby able to influence insulin secretion through its presence in the islets. A closely related compound, sulfated lactosylceramide (sulf-lac-cer), is present in the islets during fetal and neonatal life when, as in Type 2 diabetes, insulin is

Swelling isotherms of surfactant-responsive polymer gels

Recent progress in the study of surfactant-responsive polymer gels is reviewed. Polymer gels can be designed that drastically swell or shrink in response to small changes in the concentration of an ionic surfactant in an external bath containing the gel. The gel swelling isotherm, where the equilibrium gel volume is measured as a function of the external surfactant concentration, yields useful inf

Clouding of a cationic hydrophobically associating comb polymer

A novel cationic hydrophobically associating comb polymer, containing poly(oxyethylene) chains in the back-bone, is described and investigated with respect to the aqueous solubility by cloud point measurements. Cloud points were investigated as a function of polymer charge, poly(oxyethylene) chain length and concentrations of added NaCl and could be interpreted in terms of the aqueous behavior of

The lowermost Silurian of Jamtland, central Sweden: conodont biostratigraphy, correlation and biofacies

The Late Ordovician-Early Silurian succession in Jamtland includes the marine Kogsta Siltstone, which is unconformably overlain by the shallow-water Ede Quartzite that grades into the open-marine Berge Limestone. A Hirnantia shelly fauna dates the uppermost Kogsta Siltstone as Hirnantian, and shelly fossils indicate an Aeronian age for the Berge Limestone. Biostratigraphically highly diagnostic co

Cellular localization of ovarian histamine, its cyclic variations, and histaminergic effects on ovulation in the rat ovary perfused in vitro

Mast cells, visualized with toluidine blue staining and the Falck-Hillarp fluorescence technique, were mainly located around large blood vessels in the hilus region of the ovary in adult rats and in immature rats treated with PMSG. Histamine concentration in the rat ovary was significantly reduced after the LH surge in PMSG-treated animals, corresponding to a reduced number of ovarian mast cells.

Doppler blood flow changes and placental morphology in pregnancies with third trimester hemorrhage

Combined real-time ultrasound and pulsed Doppler ultrasound examinations were performed in 67 patients with third trimester hemorrhage and other symptoms related to placental abruption, starting from the onset of symptoms to delivery. In 52 of the cases, placental morphology was investigated by light microscopy. Thirteen patients were ultimately given the diagnosis abruptio placentae. None of the

Intuition and ex-post facto reasoning in moral judgment: Some experimental findings

Psychological theories have traditionally assumed that moral judgment is caused by a reasoning process. This idea was challenged in two experiments. In the first participants were asked to make judgments in tasks set up to produce a conflict between intuition and reason. In the second, participants made judgments of morally questionable actions that were described either in a vividly disgusting wa

Error Bounds for Balanced Truncation of Linear Time-Varying Systems

In this paper error bounds for truncated balanced linear time-varying systems in discrete time are obtained. The analysis is based on direct calculations with the time-varying observability and controllability Lyapunov inequalities. The obtained bounds in the induced l-script -norm generalize well-known error-bound formulas for time-invariant systems. The case of time-varying state-space dimension

Report of the First International Workshop on molecular blood group genotyping

The use of molecular genetic technology for blood group typing is becoming routine procedure in many reference laboratories worldwide. A First International Workshop was organized on behalf of the International Society of Blood Transfusion (ISBT) and the International Council for Standardization in Haematology (ICSH). Thirty laboratories that provide a molecular diagnostic service participated in

Adrenaline stimulates glucagon secretion in pancreatic A-cells by increasing the Ca2+ current and the number of granules close to the L-type Ca2+ channels

We have monitored electrical activity, voltage-gated Ca2+ currents, and exocytosis in single rat glucagon-secreting pancreatic A-cells. The A-cells were electrically excitable and generated spontaneous Na+- and Ca2+-dependent action potentials. Under basal conditions, exocytosis was tightly linked to Ca2+ influx through omega-conotoxin-GVIA-sensitive (N-type) Ca2+ channels. Stimulation of the A-ce

Performance Analysis and Optimal Design of Heat Exchangers and Heat Exchanger Networks

This thesis presents a study on performance analysis and optimal design of heat exchangers and heat exchanger networks. The study includes an experimental investigation of steam condensation in plate heat exchangers, optimal design of plate heat exchangers and plate-fin heat exchangers, and optimization of heat exchanger networks. In the experimental investigation of steam condensation in plate h

Estradiol induced changes in tumor growth and steroid receptor content in a heterotransplanted human endometrial adenocarcinoma

To study the importance of estrogen availability to growth pattern and other tumor characteristic such as estrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone receptor (PgR) content and histopathology, we have used a human tumor-nude mouse model, in which an ER- and PgR-positive and estradiol-sensitive (stimulated) human endometrial adenocarcinoma was heterotransplanted and serially passed in female (non-oopho

Ultrafast light-induced charge pair formation dynamics in poly[3-(2 '-methoxy-5 ' octylphenyl)thiophene]

Charge pair photogeneration was investigated by ultrafast absorption spectroscopy for different excitation photon energies in poly[3-(2(')-methoxy-5(')octylphenyl)thiophene] (POMeOPT) film with and without an external electric field. Electric field-assisted charge pair photogeneration in POMeOPT occurs from vibrationally relaxed singlet excitons during their entire lifetime and charge pair formati

No diurnal variation in rate or carbon isotope composition of soil respiration in a boreal forest

Characterization of soil respiration rates and δ13C values of soil-respired CO2 are often based on measurements at a particular time of day. A study by Gower et al. (2001) in a boreal forest demonstrated diurnal patterns of soil CO2 flux using transparent measurement chambers that included the understory vegetation. It is unclear whether these diurnal patterns were solely the result of photosynthe
