Experimental and theoretical studies of lifetimes and transition probabilities for Au II

We report lifetime measurements for three of the 5d(9)6p levels in An II and relativistic multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock (MCDF) calculations of lifetimes and transitions probabilities in this ion. The work was motivated by significant disagreements between previous experimental 5d(9)6p lifetimes, obtained by means of the beam-foil (BF) method and theoretical data based on Hartree-Fock calculations

Harmonic morphisms from even-dimensional hyperbolic spaces

In this paper we give a method for constructing complex valued harmonic morphisms in some pseudo-Riemannian manifolds using a parametrization of isotropic subbundles of the complexified tangent bundle. As a result we construct the first known examples of complex valued harmonic morphisms in real hyperbolic spaces of even dimension not equal to 4 which do not have totally geodesic fibres.

Endothelium-dependent relaxation by substance P in human isolated omental arteries and veins: relative contribution of prostanoids, nitric oxide and hyperpolarization

1. The objective of the present study was to investigate human omental arteries and veins with respect to: (i) the contractile effect of the thromboxane A2 analogue U46619, (ii) endothelium-dependency and mediators of the relaxing effect of substance P (SP) and acetylcholine (ACh). 2. Changes in isometric tension in response to administration of U46619, SP and ACh were measured in human isolated o

The VO2* defect in silicon

The vacancy-dioxygen complex (VO2) is one of the main defects formed in irradiated Cz-Si crystals upon annealing (or irradiation) in the temperature range 300-400degreesC. In this defect two oxygen atoms share a vacancy, each bonded to two silicon neighbors. Independent vibrations of these 0 atoms give rise to one infrared absorption band at 895.5 cm(-1) at 10 K. We report on an experimentally dis

Inter-population variations in concentrations, determinants of and correlations between 2,2',4,4',5,5'-hexachlorobiphenyl (CB-153) and 1,1-dichloro-2,2-bis (p-chlorophenyl)-ethylene (p,p'-DDE): a cross-sectional study of 3161 men and women from Inuit and European populations

BACKGROUND: The study is part of a collaborative project (Inuendo), aiming to assess the impact of dietary persistent organochlorine pollutants (POPs) on human fertility. The aims with the present study are to analyze inter-population variations in serum concentrations of 2,2',4,4',5,5'-hexachlorobiphenyl (CB-153) and 1,1-dichloro-2,2-bis (p-chlorophenyl)-ethylene (p,p'-DDE), to assess inter-popul

The protease inhibitor cystatin C is differentially expressed among dendritic cell populations, but does not control antigen presentation

Dendritic cells (DC) undergo complex developmental changes during maturation. The MHC class H (MHC H) molecules of immature DC accumulate in intracellular compartments, but are expressed at high levels on the plasma membrane upon DC maturation. It has been proposed that the cysteine protease inhibitor cystatin C (CyC) plays a pivotal role in the control of this process by regulating the activity o

Supplementation with conjugated linoleic acid causes isomer-dependent oxidative stress and elevated C-reactive protein - A potential link to fatty acid-induced insulin resistance

Background-Conjugated linoleic acids (CLAs), a group of fatty acids shown to have beneficial effects in animals, are also used as weight loss supplements. Recently, we reported that the t10c12 CLA-isomer caused insulin resistance in abdominally obese men via unknown mechanisms. The aim of the present study was to examine whether CLA has isomer-specific effects on oxidative stress or inflammatory b

COX-2 is necessary for venous ligation-mediated bone adaptation in mice

In osteoblasts, cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) is the major isozyme responsible for production of prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are local mediators of bone resorption and formation and are known to be involved in bone's adaptive response to fluid shear stress (FSS). We have previously described a model of trabecular bone loss in hindlimb-suspended mice and rats and demonstrated partial protection from

Footwear for cold work: a limited questionnaire survey

This questionnaire survey was initiated to acquire information for prepration of a series of field studies. The paper deals with questions that were related to the thermal responses of the feet and footwear performance. The questionnaire was sent to a harbour, a telecommunication company and a customs office. At the harbour most of the workers used footwear with warm lining during winter. Half of

Applications of membrane processes in the beet and cane sugar production

Despite their success in different segments of the food industry, membranes are not well-established in the beet and cane sugar industry. A comprehensive overview on the potential applications of membranes in both the beet and cane sugar industry is given. The part on the beet sugar industry focuses on pulp press water recycling, pectin production from beet pulp, beet juice purification, demineral

Deletion of laminin-8 results in increased tumor neovascularization and metastasis in mice

Laminin-8 (alpha4beta1gamma1) is one of the major laminin isoforms expressed in vascular endothelial basement membranes. Here we show that deletion of laminin-8 in mice affects angiogenesis under pathological conditions. Murine tumor models used in laminin alpha4-deficient mice results in hyperneovascularization and significant promotion of tumor growth and metastasis. The higher tumor growth rate

HIV/AIDS knowledge and condom use among Somali and Sudanese immigrants in Denmark.

Aims: This study explores the knowledge, attitudes and practices among Somali and Sudanese immigrants in Denmark with regard to HIV/AIDS and condom use. Material and methods: A 78-item questionnaire, divided into five thematic sections, was given to 192 purposively selected Sudanese and Somalis of both sexes, aged 18-49, who had lived in Denmark for one or more years. It was administered in Arabic

Immuno-modulatory functions of CD1d-restricted natural killer T cells

NKT cells have many unique features; such as recognition of glycolipids presented by CD1d, expression of NK receptors and rapid production of large amounts of cytokines, such as IL-4 and IFN-gamma,?upon activation. This early and robust cytokine burst is believed to give NKT cells the
