Endoplasmic reticulum stress associated with caspases-4 and-2 mediates korbazol-induced B-chronic lymphocytic leukemia cell apoptosis

Purpose: B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (B-CLL) is an incurable disease that rapidly develops drug resistance. Therefore there is a need for identifying new agents that will improve the therapeutic outcome. Korbazol is a natural product known to exert cytotoxic effect on the in vitro survival of leukemic cells. The aim of this study was to investigate the mechanism of korbazol-induced apoptos

Sensationellt valresultat i Indiens folkrikaste delstat

Patient-relevant outcomes fourteen years after meniscectomy : influence of type of meniscal tear and size of resection

OBJECTIVES: To study long-term patient-relevant outcomes after meniscectomy, a surgical procedure associated with a high risk of knee osteoarthritis (OA). Principal objectives were to compare traumatic with degenerative meniscal tear and partial with subtotal meniscectomy.METHODS: We studied a well-defined cohort of 205 patients who had undergone isolated unilateral meniscectomy between 1983 and 1

Early changes in gene expression in the dorsal root ganglia after transection of the sciatic nerve; effects of amphiregulin and PAI-1 on regeneration.

To characterize the gene activity that may be required for neuronal survival and regeneration, we used the Affymetrix GeneChip Mu74A to screen 12000 genes and expressed sequence tag (EST) mRNA from L4 and L5 mouse dorsal root ganglia (DRG) 12 h and 24 h after sciatic nerve transection. At 12 h, we found 17 upregulated transcripts, and at 24 h, 49 that met our criteria of a significant 2-fold incre

Comparison of isotropic hardening and kinematic hardening in thermoplasticity

A coupled thermo-mechanical problem is presented in this paper. The constitutive model is based on thermoplastic model for large strains where both kinematic and isotropic hardening are included. It is shown that a non-associated plasticity formulation enables thermodynamic consistent heat generation to be modeled, which can be fitted accurately to experimental data. In the numerical examples the

Cloning, sequence analysis, and expression of a gene encoding an endoxylanase from Bacillus halodurans S7

The gene encoding an alkaline active xylanase of Bacillus halodurans S7, containing an open reading frame of 1188 nucleotides encoding 396 amino acids, was cloned and expressed in Escherchia coli. On the basis of sequence similarity, possible -10 and -35, ribosome binding, and transcription terminator regions were identified. Analysis of the deduced amino acid sequence revealed that the protein wa

The Tragedy of the Commoners: The Decline of the Customary Marine Tenure System of Tonga

The breakdown of traditional marine tenure systems and overexploitation of marine organisms as a result of rapid modernization, urbanization and population growth in the case of Tonga is outlined. The customary marine tenure system is described and the threats against the coral reefs are discussed. It is shown how accumulative strategies correlate with the move toward overexploitation. It is argue

Structural analysis of an anti-estradiol antibody

An anti-estradiol antibody with improved specificity is searched for by combining steroid analog binding studies, mutant antibodies obtained from a phage-display library and structural modeling. Three-dimensional models for the anti-estradiol antibody 57-2 were constructed by comparative model building. Estradiol and analogs were docked into the combining site and molecular dynamics simulation was

Cutaneous human papillomaviruses found in sun-exposed skin: Beta-papillomavirus species 2 predominates in squamous cell carcinoma

Background. A spectrum of cutaneous human papillomaviruses (HPVs) is detectable in nonmelanoma skin cancers, as well as in healthy skin, but the significance that the presence of these types of HPV DNA has for the pathogenesis of skin cancer remains unclear. Methods. We studied 349 nonimmunosuppressed patients with skin lesions (82 with squamous cell carcinomas, 126 with basal cell carcinomas, 49

Regeneration of commercial TiO2-V2O5-WO3SCR catalysts used in bio fuel plants

Deactivation of SCR catalysts applied in bio fuel plants is a major problem due to higher amounts of potassium in bio fuel compared to other fuels. Regeneration of deactivated catalysts seems to be a promising way for minimising the total cost of bio fuel plants and great potential lies in finding regeneration processes that can be used commercially. The first applied regeneration method was washi

Absence of mutations of the BRAF gene in malignant melanoma of soft parts (clear cell sarcoma of tendons and aponeuroses)

Malignant melanoma of soft parts (MMSP), also called clear cell sarcoma of tendons and aponeuroses, is cytogenetically characterized by the t(12;22)(q13;q12) resulting in the chimeric EWSR1/ATF1 gene. MMSP shares a number of morphologic, histologic, and immunohistochemical features with malignant melanoma of the skin, causing diagnostic difficulties in the distinction between MMSP and metastatic m

Melatonin as antioxidant, geroprotector and anticarcinogen

The effect of the pineal indole hormone melatonin on the life span of mice, rats and fruit flies has been studied using various approaches. It has been observed that in female CBA, SHR, SAM and transgenic HER-2/neu mice long-term administration of melatonin was followed by an increase in the mean life span. In rats, melatonin treatment increased survival of male and female rats. In D. melanogaster

Videoradiographic analysis of how carbonated thin liquids and thickened liquids affect the physiology of swallowing in subjects with aspiration on thin liquids.

Purpose: To analyze how carbonated thin liquids affected the physiology of swallowing in dysphagic patients. Material and Methods: 40 patients were analyzed; 36 were neurologically impaired. During a therapeutic videoradiographic swallowing examination the patients had to swallow liquids with the following consistencies three times: thin, thickened and carbonated. The liquids were given in doses

Impact of iron status on cadmium uptake in suckling piglets

Low iron status is known to increase the uptake of dietary cadmium in both adolescents and adults and there are indications that cadmium is absorbed from the intestine by the two major iron transporters divalent metal transporter 1 (DMT1) and ferroportin 1 (FPN1), In addition, it has been suggested that duodenal metallothionein (MT) may limit the transport of cadmium across the intestinal epitheli
