Use of a hydrocapillary dressing in the management of highly exuding ulcers; a comparative study
Objective: To evaluate the safety and performance of Alione Hydrocapillary dressing (Coloplast A/S) in the management of highly exuding chronic venous leg ulcers and compare it with two hydropolymer dressings, Tielle and Tielle Plus (Johnson & Johnson). Method: A comparative clinical trial was conducted on 97 patients with an ankle brachial pressure index ?0.8 and a highly exuding leg ulcer. U

Onset of breeding among Swedish Starlings Sturnus vulgaris in relation to spring temperature in 1981-2003
Both spring temperature and date of the first Starling Sturnus vulgaris egg were highly correlated between different study sites and weather stations in the southern half of Sweden. In southern Sweden, but not in northern Sweden, onset of breeding correlated strongly with spring temperature, particularly during the last ten days of April, the period that happens to coincide with the start of breed
Pathogenic paths? A time geographical approach in medical geography
Medical geography usually attempts to disentangle and explain the ecological and causal contexts of health, disease and environment by mapping spatial patterns of cases and potential pathogenic factors. However, many diseases are believed to show after long periods of latency , spanning years and even decades between initial exposure and clinical onset. In view of high spatial human mobility - in

Simulation and experimentation of a single-phase claw-pole motor
Purpose - The purpose of the paper is to evaluate theoretically and experimentally the static and dynamic characteristics of a single-phase claw-pole motor using soft magnetic composite (SMC) for the stator core. Design/methodology/approach - On the basis of the static characteristics, which are measured and obtained from a series of 3D FE magnetostatic solutions, the dynamic characteristics are s
Hole-burning techniques for isolation and study of individual hyperfine transitions in inhomogeneously broadened solids demonstrated in Pr3+: Y2SiO5
Due to their narrow homogeneous linewidths, rare-earth ions in inorganic crystals at low temperatures have recently been given considerable attention as test materials for experiments in coherent quantum optics. Because these narrow linewidth transitions have been buried in a wide inhomogeneous line, the scope of experiments that could be carried out in these materials has been limited. However, h
Testing an oral assessment guide during chemotherapy treatment in a Swedish care setting: a pilot study
Oral complications are common in patients with haematological malignancies who undergo chemotherapy treatment. A pilot study including 16 haematological patients was carried out to evaluate the oral status using an Oral Assessment Guide (OAG) and to test the reliability of the OAG. The oral assessments were made daily by registered nurses at a Department of Internal Medicine in Sweden. Once a week
Intrauterine growth restriction.
Pathophysiological processes underlying intrauterine growth restriction are very complex and poorly understood. Growth restricted fetuses are at risk of hypoxia and, therefore, an early diagnosis of intrauterine growth restriction is important for initiation of fetal surveillance. Application of a three-dimensional ultrasound method for estimation of fetal weight promises better precision. Use of
The semenogelins: proteins with functions beyond reproduction?
The coagulum proteins of human semen, semenogelins I and II, are secreted in abundance by the seminal vesicles. Their function in reproduction is poorly understood as they are rapidly degraded in ejaculated semen. However, more recent results indicate that it is time to put the semenogelins in a broader physiological perspective that goes beyond reproduction and fertility.
Hybrid Dish/Stirling systems: Combustor and heat pipe receiver development
A hybrid sodium heat pipe receiver has been developed within the project HYHPIRE, funded 50% by the European Commission. The hybrid receiver was designed for the SBP/LCS 10-kWel dish/Stirling system with the SOLO-161 Stirling engine. Design of the heat pipe receiver and combustion system are described in this paper The system has been tested successfully in all operation modes. Results and experie
Xafs Study of Co(Ii) Sorption at the Alpha-Al2o3-Water Interface
Aqueous Co(II) sorption onto alpha-Al2O3 at pH 8.1 and surface concentrations (Gamma) of 0.16 to 11.3 mu mol m(-2) has been studied by XAFS spectroscopy. At low Gamma, Co adsorbs in a monodentate fashion or in a bridging bidentate fashion and is present as small oligomers. A Co(OH)(2)-like phase forms at high Gamma.

Belief & Desire : The Standard Model of Intentional Action — Critique and Defence
The scheme of concepts we employ in daily life to explain intentional behaviour form a belief-desire model (BD model), in which motivating states are sorted into two suitably broad categories. The BD model embeds a philosophy of action, i.e. a set of assumptions about the ontology of motivation with subsequent restrictions on psychologising and norms of practical reason. A comprehensive critique o
The ballad dance of the faeroese: Island biocultural geography in an age of globalisation
Boundary issues are central to globalisation - the expansion and time-space integration of human societies - and to both biological and cultural diversity. The latter are, in turn, intrinsically related in processes of coevolution that generate change in the patchwork quilt of cultural and natural landscapes. These processes are especially discernible in small island societies. This paper argues t
Effects of sample pretreatment and sequential fractionation by centrifuge drainage on concentrations of minerals in a calcareous soil solution
Soil solution is the direct source of mineral nutrients to vascular plants. Soil solutions of sieved samples at water-holding capacity of a seminatural calcareous soil, never cultivated or treated by fertilizers, were collected by sequential centrifugation at 24-18,900 X g relative centrifugal force (RCF), followed by ultrafiltration (0.2 mu m), and analysed for Al, Ca, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, P, S
