The gonadotropin receptors FSH-R and LH-R of Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus), 1: Isolation of multiple transcripts encoding full-length and truncated variants of FSH-R.
As a first step towards understanding the regulatory mechanisms underlying the asynchronous oogenesis in repetitive spawning fish, full-length cDNAs encoding the receptors for follicle stimulating hormone (FSH-R) and luteinizing hormone (LH-R) were isolated from the gonads of the flatfish Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus). The predicted halibut FSH-R and LH-R of 664 and 698 amino acids,

Cash Cow, Civic Space or Co-optation: Private Schools in Urban China
Almost all realms of Chinese society have been affected by privatization. Education is no exception, although its privatization does not necessarily affect the school system per se. Chinese scholars have usually provided two explanations for privatized schooling in China: 'massification' (educational expansion) and 'pluralization' (diversification). In my research project on private schools in ur

Language and landscape: a cross-linguistic perspective
This special issue is the outcome of collaborative work on the relationship between language and landscape, carried out in the Language and Cognition Group at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics. The contributions explore the linguistic categories of landscape terms and place names in nine genetically, typologically and geographically diverse languages, drawing on data from first-hand f
Molecular cloning of a small prostate protein, known as beta-microsemenoprotein, PSP94 or beta-inhibin, and demonstration of transcripts in non-genital tissues
In order to study the gene expression of the seminal plasma protein beta-microseminoprotein, also known as PSP94 and beta-inhibin, clones encoding this protein were isolated from a cDNA library constructed in lambda gt11. Nucleotide sequencing confirmed the structure of a previously cloned cDNA. By northern blot analysis identical sized transcripts were demonstrated in the prostate, the respirator

Studies of Molecular and Cluster Fragmentation Using Synchrotron Radiation: Measurements and Models
A new spectrometer for studying photoinduced fragmentation has been designed and commissioned. The instrument produces a detailed view of the energy and angular emission of fragments, which in the case of small molecules can be related to their geometry at the moment of dissociation. The spectral profiles for single, double and triple ion coincidences are analyzed in terms of molecular alignment,
