Modeling the wind structure of AG Peg by fitting of C IV and N V resonance doublets

The latest outburst of AG Peg has lasted for 150 years, which makes itthe slowest nova eruption ever recorded. During the time of IUEobservations (1978-1995) line profiles and intensity ratios of the N Vand C IV doublet components changed remarkably, and we discuss plausiblereasons. One of them is radiative pumping of Fe II which is investigatedby studying the fluorescence lines from pumped levels

Understanding what it means to be a Montessori teacher: Teachers' reflections on their lives and work.

Analys av lärarnas livsberättelser i samband med övriga data har granskats fThe overall aim of this study has been to come to a better understanding of what it means to be a Montessori teacher, by getting a group of Montessori teachers to reflect on their lives and work. Data exploration has comprised journals, interviews, written reflections and collaborative contextual analysis. Analysis of the teachers' occupational life histories and the findings as a whole have been

Homocysteine and Coronary Artery Disease With special Reference to Biochemical Effects Of Vitamin Therapy

Medfödd enzymbrist kan ge mycket höga blodnivåer av homocystein, vilket bland annat leder till kärlskada ochAn elevated plasma level of homocysteine has been suggested as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. The objectives of this thesis were to study the influence of renal function on homocysteine levels in patients with coronary artery disease and to explore the association of elevated plasma levels of homocysteine to oxidative stress, inflammation, and endothelial dysfunction. The effects of pla

Modelling Steel Behaviour

When modelling material mechanical behaviour, an analytical description is required of the relationship between stresses and strains. A computer oriented mechanical behaviour model for steel is described. The model is based on the fact that the deformation process at transient high temperature conditions can be desribed by three strain components which are separately found in different steady stat

Astrocytes as Cellular Vehicles in Ex Vivo Gene Therapy Studies to the Rat Brain

Today, there are no cures for any of the various diseases. Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disorder with a prevalence of 0.1% and the first symptoms usually start to appear between 50-60 years of age with rigidity, tremor, bradykinesia and postural abno

A Swedish case-control network for studies of drug-induced morbidity - acute pancreatitis

Objective: To evaluate risk factors - notably drugs - for developing acute pancreatitis. Methods: A population-based, case-control study, encompassing 1.4 million inhabitants aged 20-85 years from four regions in Sweden between 1 January 1995 and 31 May 1998. A total of 462 cases were hospitalised in surgical departments with their first episode of acute pancreatitis without previously known bilia

Presence and function of the calcitonin gene-related peptide receptor on rat pial arteries investigated in vitro and in vivo

Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and related peptides may be involved in migraine pathogenesis. To understand their vasomotor role in the cerebral circulation, we performed two studies, a pressurized arteriography study of the middle cerebral artery (MCA) and a genuine closed cranial window (gCCW) in vivo study. Using the pressurized arteriography model rat MCAs were mounted on micropipettes

Increased serum cartilage oligomeric matrix protein levels and decreased patellar bone mineral density in patients with chondromalacia patellae.

BACKGROUND: Chondromalacia patellae is a potentially disabling disorder characterised by features of patellar cartilage degradation. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate markers of cartilage and bone turnover in patients with chondromalacia patellae. METHODS: 18 patients with chondromalacia patellae were studied. Serum cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (s-COMP) and bone sialoprotein (s-BSP) levels were measur

Determination of Novel Borrelia Genospecies in Swedish Ixodes ricinus Ticks.

A total of 301 adult questing Ixodes ricinus ticks were collected at 15 different locations along the south and east coasts of Sweden to determine the Borrelia genospecies diversity. Thirty-two ticks (11%) were found to be positive by nested PCR with Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato-specific primers. Species determination was based on partial sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene and the flagellin gene.

A Brush-Model Based Semi-Empirical Tire-Model for Combined Slips

This paper presents a new method to derive the tire forces for simultaneous braking and cornering, by combining empirical models for pure braking and cornering using brush-model tire mechanics. The method is aimed at simulation of vehicle handling, and is of intermediate complexity such that it may be implemented and calibratedby the end user. The brush model states that the contact patch between

Photochromic pigments from blue-green algae - phycochrome-A, phycochrome-B and phycochrome-C

Aqueous extracts of blue-green algae were fractionated by electrofocusing. In all algae investigated, fractions with isoelectric points at or near 4.6 showed photochromic behavior analogous to that of phytochrome, although they were sensitive to light of shorter wavelength. Three main types of photochromic pigments were found. Phycochrome a (in Tolypothrix distorta, Phormidium luridium, Nostoc mus

Extraterrestrial chromite in Middle Ordovician marine limestone at Kinnekulle, southern Sweden - Traces of a major asteroid breakup event

The distribution of sediment-dispersed extraterrestrial chromite grains and other Cr-rich spinels (> 63 mu m) has been studied in Middle Ordovician Orthoceratite Limestone from two quarries at Kinnekulle, southern Sweden. In the Thorsberg quarry, all similar to 3.2 m thick sequence of beds previously shown to be rich in fossil meteorites is also rich in sediment-dispersed extraterrestrial chromite
