The Historical Roots of Dowries in Contemporary Kerala

Dowry payments from the family of the bride to that of the groom were rarely encountered in Kerala during the early twentieth century, but now are almost universal. Based on an examination of historical documents, including legislative debates, court cases, and reports, the way dowry was explained in the past is compared with the results of 200 contemporary interviews to determine its current rati

Consequences and adaptation in daily life - patients' experiences three decades after a nerve injury sustained in adolescence

Background: To explore the patients' experiences during the three decades following repair of a nerve injury in the forearm and its consequences for daily life. Strategies that were used to facilitate adaptation were also investigated. Methods: Fifteen participants with a complete median and/or ulnar nerve injury repaired in the ages from 13-20 years were interviewed using a semi-structured interv

Interfacing citizens’ and institutions’ practice and responsibilities for climate change adaptation

Climate change poses a serious challenge to sustainable urban development, placing many cities at risk. Climatic conditions are changing to such an extent that the capacity of urban institutions and associated governance systems to deal with climatic extremes and variability is being reduced. New approaches for urban climate change adaptation are thus urgently needed. There is an increasing conse

Analysis of laser wakefield dynamics in capillary tubes

A general approach to the modifications of the spectrum of a laser pulse interacting with matter is elaborated and used for spectral diagnostics of laser wakefield generation in guiding structures. Analytical predictions of the laser frequency red shift due to the wakefield excited in a capillary waveguide are confirmed by self-consistent modeling results. The role of ionization blue shift, and no

Factor analysis in predominantly severe COPD: Identification of disease heterogeneity by easily measurable characteristics

Background: The clinical and demographic variables defining the heterogeneity of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are unclear. A post-hoc analysis of five randomised studies in patients with a history of previous exacerbations examined the clinical and demographic characteristics describing moderate-to-very-severe COPD. Methods: Factor analysis was performed on all continuous baseline

Interlamellar forces and the thermodynamic characterization of lamellar phospholipid systems

In this review, we summarize a series of experimental studies of the swelling of zwitterionic lamellar phospholipid and phospholipid-cholesterol systems using a novel double twin calorimeter. With this method, one can obtain simultaneous measures of the partial molar free energy and the partial molar enthalpy, and the experimental studies thus provide a complete thermodynamic characterization of t

Beta-delayed proton emission from Mg-21

Beta-delayed proton emission from Mg-21 has been measured at ISOLDE, CERN, with a detection setup consisting of two charged-particle telescopes surrounding the decay point. Altogether 27 beta p branches were measured with center-of-mass energies between 0.4-7.2MeV. Seven new beta p branches were observed. Beta-delayed protons were used to determine the half-life of Mg-21 as 118.6 +/- 0.5 ms. From

Gene therapy by enzyme replacement for Parkinson’s disease Optimization of continuous DOPA delivery and development of a candidate vector for clinical application

The introduction of L-DOPA pharmacotherapy revolutionized the treatment of Parkinson’s disease close to fifty years ago. Before the discovery of dopamine as a neurotransmitter and its involvement in the disease, these patients had very little aid from medication and were bound to a life without movement. The dopamine neurons in the midbrain are a key player in the circuitry that is responsible for

Enzymes catalyzing the hydrolysis of long-chain monoacyglycerols in rat adipose tissue

Acetone-ether preparations of epididymal fat pads from fasted or fed rats contained two enzymes catalyzing the hydrolysis of long-chain monoacylglycerols. The enzymes were identified as monoacylglycerol lipase (Tornqvist, H. and Belfrage, P., (1976) J. Biol Chem. 251, 813--819) and lipoprotein lipase by their apparent pI values after electrofocusing in non-ionic detergent, selective inhibition pro

Utformning och användning av kommunala verksamhetsmått

Popular Abstract in Swedish Något tillspetsat förefaller varje kommun driva utvecklingsarbete inriktat på verksamhetsmått. Är så inte fallet är ansvariga snabba att betona att verksamhetsmått är viktigt och att de precis har beslutat om ett större måttprojekt. Denna bok ger en bild av i vilken omfattning fyra gatukontor utformar och använder verksamhetsmått. Boken innehåller också beskrivningar ocThe purpose of this study is to develop a frame of reference within which formal control system performance measures can be described and their design and use can be analyzed for control systems in municipalities. From a cybernetic control approach measures are used as instruments to plan and gain feedback from employee actions, and adjust them to the internal and external environment of which the

Continuous-Time Models in Kernel Smoothing

This thesis consists of five papers (Papers A-E) treating problems in non-parametric statistics, especially methods of kernel smoothing applied to density estimation for stochastic processes (Papers A-D) and regression analysis (Paper E). A recurrent theme is to, instead of treating highly positively correlated data as ``asymptotically independent'', take advantage of local dependence structures b

Five-factor inventories have a major higher order factor related to social desirability which can be reduced by framing items neutrally

The factors in self-report inventories measuring the five-factor model (FFM) correlate with one another although they theoretically should not. Study 1 showed, across three different FFM-questionnaires, that almost all of the common variance between factors can be attributed to a single general factor related to social desirability. In Study 2, simple rephrasing of items from a FFM-questionnaire m

A new energy and angle resolving electron spectrometer - First results

A new energy and angle resolved analyzer for photoelectron spectroscopy is described. This analyzer is based on combining an advanced focusing electron lens system with time-of-flight measurements. A position sensitive detector gives time and position for the electron events. From this information the kinetic energy and start direction are obtained through a transformation procedure, giving both a

Measurement of the top quark pair cross section with ATLAS in pp collisions at root s=7 TeV using final states with an electron or a muon and a hadronically decaying tau lepton

A measurement of the cross section of top quark pair production in proton-proton collisions recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV is reported. The data sample used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.05 fb(-1). Events with an isolated electron or muon and a tau lePton decaying hadronically are used. In addition, a large missing t

Genomic organization of profilin-III and evidence for a transcript expressed exclusively in testis.

Profilins are small, widely expressed actin binding proteins, thought to be key regulators of actin dynamics in living cells. So far, three profilin-genes have been described: profilin-I (PFN1), profilin-II (PFN2) with two splice variants and the recently identified profilin-III (PFN3). Here we describe the genomic organization of the genes encoding human and mouse profilin-III. Both are single ex

Sex determination in barn swallows Hirundo rustica by means of discriminant analysis in two European populations

Aims: Differences in morphology in adult barn swallows were investigated using bone and feather measurements taken from birds from a northern (Danish) and a southern (Spanish) European population. Discriminant Function Analysis was used to help in discriminating the sex of individuals of both populations. Location: Badajoz (Spain) and Kraghede (Denmark). Methods: Two discriminant functions were ob
