Both total and phosphorylated tau are increased in Alzheimer's disease
BACKROUND: Pathological tau protein concentrations in CSF are found in both Alzheimer's disease (AD) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD), but studies on brain tissue have suggested that the tau pathology in AD differs from that in FTD and that the difference may be related to the degree of phosphorylation. As CSF tau protein is increased after stroke, tau may also be implicated in the pathophysiolog
Codes of Power. Deconstruction of institutional discourses
The text introduces the semiology as method in the analysis of Sociology as area of authoritarian social discourse. In opposition to an "empirical" description where the "fact" is described as if it was not "social" but a fact "of nature" the deconstruction of the Power discourse shows that the "fact" is produced as definition or description, i.e, the Power-discourse works as Code which through st
Development of asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation-multi angle laser light scattering analysis for molecular mass characterization of cationic potato amylopectin
The goal of this study is to investigate the applicability of asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation (AsFlFFF)–multi angle laser light scattering (MALLS), and to develop a method for analysis of cationic potato amylopectin (CPAP) having ultrahigh molecular mass (UHMr). Use of the aqueous carrier having low salt content (3 mM NaN3) resulted in a distortion in AsFlFFF fractograms of CPAP with a
Plastic response to pond drying in tadpoles Rana temporaria: tests of cost models
Tadpoles from two types of ponds, temporary and permanent, were raised in a common garden experiment. There was no clear effect of pond type on development rate (time for metamorphosis). From each sibship, one group was raised under a constant water regime (deep tanks) and one was subject to simulated pond drying (shallow tanks). The tadpoles exhibited a plastic response to pond drying: they metam

Comparison between tape-recorded and amplitude-integrated EEG monitoring in sick newborn infants
In 15 ill newborn infants a comparison between long-term multichannel and single-channel recordings of simultaneously tape-recorded (Medilog system) and amplitude-integrated EEG (Cerebral Function Monitor) was made. There was good agreement between the main type of background activity diagnosed with the tape-recorded and the amplitude-integrated EEG for all recordings. Two infants had repetitive s

Hereditary dyslipidemias and combined risk factors in children with a family history of premature coronary artery disease
AIM: Schoolchildren aged 10-11 with a family history of premature coronary artery disease (CAD), were examined in order to identify children with genetically determined dyslipidemias and a combination of risk factors. METHODS: A total of 4000 questionnaires were distributed by the school; 55% of the families answered and returned the questionnaire. Blood lipids, apolipoprotein B, and Lp(a) lipopro
Gas chromatographic determination of D-arabinitol/L-arabinitol ratios in urine: a potential method for diagnosis of disseminated candidiasis
A gas chromatographic procedure was developed to determine the relative amounts of D- and L-arabinitol in urine. Samples were filtered, diluted, purified through extractions, evaporated, and treated with trifluoroacetic anhydride; the arabinitol derivatives thus obtained were separated on a chiral stationary phase and registered by using an electron-capture detector. Urine samples from a patient w
It is a largely accepted fact that creative individuals are products of their social environment. This book takes the concept further and builds upon the hypothesis that in most cases a creative individual is the result of not just one, but several environments. Using the time-geographical method it studies how individuals passing through different environments are shaped into future Nobel Prize l
Tachyphylaxis of the ECL-cell response to PACAP: receptor desensitization and/or depletion of secretory products
Background and purpose: Rat stomach ECL cells secrete histamine and pancreastatin in response to gastrin and pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating peptide-27 ( PACAP). This study applies microdialysis to explore how ECL cells in situ respond to PACAP and gastrin. Experimental approach: Both peptides were administered by microinfusion into the gastric submucosa. The microdialysate was analysed for

On the Effect of Transient Data-Errors in Controller Implementations
Computer-level faults leading to data errors in computations arepredicted to occur increasingly frequent in future microprocessors. This work discusses the impact of such errors on closed-loopperformance in implementations of digital control systems. A method torender a control system more robust to data errors by introducingartificial signal limits and then combine them with an anti-windupscheme i
Wavelet Analysis of In-Cylinder LDV Measurements and Correlation Against Heat-Release
Wavelet analysis was used to calculate turbulence and mean velocity levels for LDV measurements made in a four valve spark ignition engine. Five different camshafts were tested, and they produce significantly different flow behaviour. The standard cam gives tumble and with valve deactivation, swirl is produced. One camshaft with early inlet valve closing and two camshafts with late inlet valve clo
The global obesity epidemic: Snacking and obesity may start with free meals during infant feeding.
Feeding is vital for survival. The brain has strong hunger and reward mechanisms that ensure optimal food intake for adequate nutrition. The drive for feeding is particularly strong in humans whose large brains require large energy support. This starts immediately after birth; the newborn child being able to taste sucrose and suck the sweet and fat from its mother's milk. At present, mothers are g
An argument for agent-neutral value
This paper argues (a) that to any agent-relative value maker there will correspond an agent-neutral value maker, and the latter explains the former; and (b) that to each agent-relative constitutive ground there corresponds a neutral one, and the latter explains the former. It follows from (b), if not from (a), that agent-neutral value exists if agent-relative value does.
