First Superheavy Element Experiments at the GSI Recoil Separator TASCA: The Production and Decay of Element 114 in the 244Pu(48Ca,3-4n) Reaction

Experiments with the new recoil separator, Transactinide Separator and Chemistry Apparatus (TASCA), at the GSI were performed by using beams of Ca-48 to irradiate targets of Pb206-208, which led to the production of No252-254 isotopes. These studies allowed for evaluation of the performance of TASCA when coupled to a new detector and electronics system. By following these studies, the isotopes of

cis-trans Isomers of PtX4L2 (X=halogen and L=neutral ligand): trans -bis(dimethyl sulfide)tetraiodidoplatinum(IV)

The octahedral title complex, [PtI4(C2H6S)2] or trans PtI4(dms)2 (dms is dimethylsulfide), crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P21/n (Z=2) with molecular symmetry Ci, which is the most frequently occurring point group for trans-PtX4L2[56%, 28 structures in the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) [Allen, 2002, Acta Cryst B58, 380-388]] followed by C1 (22%, 11 structures). The complexes form

The aqueous phase behavior of polyion-surfactant ion complex salts mixed with nonionic surfactants.

The aim of this work was to study intermolecular interactions in systems containing charged polyion (polyacrylate, PA(-)), charged surfactant (C(16)TA(+)) and nonionic surfactant (C(12)E(5) or C(12)E(8)). To achieve this we have created four different phase diagrams using two different so-called complex salts, C(16)TAPA(25) and C(16)TAPA(6000), both consisting of positively charged surfactant (C(1

Alcohol dehydrogenase gene ADH3 activates glucose alcoholic fermentation in genetically engineered Dekkera bruxellensis yeast.

Dekkera bruxellensis is a non-conventional Crabtree-positive yeast with a good ethanol production capability. Compared to Saccharomyces cerevisiae, its tolerance to acidic pH and its utilization of alternative carbon sources make it a promising organism for producing biofuel. In this study, we developed an auxotrophic transformation system and an expression vector, which enabled the manipulation o

Physiological effects of over-expressing compartment-specific components of the protein folding machinery in xylose-fermenting Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Background: Efficient utilization of both glucose and xylose is necessary for a competitive ethanol production from lignocellulosic materials. Although many advances have been made in the development of xylose-fermenting strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the productivity remains much lower compared to glucose. Previous transcriptional analyses of recombinant xylose-fermenting strains have mainl

Visualization of Biomass Pyrolysis and Temperature Imaging in a Heated-Grid Reactor

The main advantage of a heated-grid reactor for studying pyrolysis kinetics of solid fuel samples is that high heating rates of up to 1000 K/s can be obtained. However, one of the concerns is whether the temperature distribution over the grid material is uniform and whether the presence of a thermocouple welded to the grid causes any measurement errors. Biomass samples were placed on the heated-gr

Design of global production and distribution networks: A literature review and research agenda

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to systematically and critically review the extant literature on the design of global production and distribution networks to identify gaps in the literature and identify future research opportunities. The design aspects deal with strategic and structural decisions such as: opening or closing of manufacturing plants or distribution centres, selection of locat

20 GHz Wavelet Generator Using a Gated Tunnel Diode

We demonstrate the use of a GaAs-AlGaAs gated tunnel diode (GTD) in an ultra-wideband (UWB) wavelet generator. An inductor is integrated to form an oscillator circuit, which is driven by the negative differential conductance property of a GTD. It is demonstrated that as the gate tunes the magnitude of the output conductance, the oscillator may be switched on and off, creating short RF pulses. The

Alternative Lead Systems for Diagnostic Electrocardiography: Validation and Clinical Applicability

Inom både industrin och akademin har många års arbete lagts ned på utveckling av deThe standard 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) remains one of the most important and most frequently used tools for diagnosing cardiac diseases, although several different examination modalities in cardio¬logy have been developed over the years. The standard ECG uses 10 electrodes placed on well-defined positions on the body, 6 on the torso and 4 distally on the limbs. Both industry and academia hav

Causes and risk factors for death in systemic sclerosis: a study from the EULAR Scleroderma Trials and Research (EUSTAR) database

Objectives To determine the causes and predictors of mortality in systemic sclerosis (SSc). Methods Patients with SSc (n=5860) fulfilling the American College of Rheumatology criteria and prospectively followed in the EULAR Scleroderma Trials and Research (EUSTAR) cohort were analysed. EUSTAR centres completed a structured questionnaire on cause of death and comorbidities. Kaplan-Meier and Cox pro

Nutrient intake in adolescent girls and boys diagnosed with coeliac disease at an early age is mostly comparable to their non-coeliac contemporaries

BackgroundFood habits, nutrient needs and intakes differ between males and females, although few nutritional studies on patients with coeliac disease (CD) have reported results stratified by gender. ObjectivesTo compare energy and nutrient intakes among 13-year olds diagnosed with CD in early childhood with those of a non-coeliac (NC) age- and gender-matched control group, and also with estimated

Prey-type-dependent foraging of young-of-the-year fish in turbid and humic environments

Fish, which are generally visual foragers, experiences reduced reaction distance in visually degraded environments, which has consequences for encounter rates with prey. Small prey is detected at shorter distances than larger prey, and piscivores are therefore predicted to be more strongly affected by visual degradation. In experiments, roach (Rutilus rutilus) were fed two plankton prey types and

Modelling and Forecasting Short-Term Interest Rate Volatility: A Semiparametric Approach

This paper employs a semiparametric procedure to estimate the diffusion process of short-term interest rates. The Monte Carlo study shows that the semiparametric approach produces more accurate volatility estimates than models that accommodate asymmetry, levels e¤ect and serial dependence in the conditional variance. Moreover, the semiparametric approach yields robust volatility estimates even if
