On the modelling of the dynamic propagation of biological components in the secondary clarifier

When coupling a model of the biological reactor to a model of the settler, difficulties appear because of the different representations used for the particulate material. A combined model of the entire activated sludge process needs to include an algorithm for the dynamic propagation of the biological components of the particulate material through the secondary clarifier. In particular, this is of

Effects of E-selectin and P-selectin blockade on neutrophil sequestration in tissues and neutrophil oxidative burst in burned rats

OBJECTIVE: Neutrophil deposition in tissues (leukosequestration) after shock may produce local tissue injury from proteases and high-energy oxygen species released from sequestered neutrophils. The initial step in the binding of neutrophils to capillary endothelium is the interaction of adhesion molecule (selectin) receptors between neutrophils and endothelial cells. We quantified leukosequestrati

Studien tar sin utgångspunkt i en musikalproducerande verksaThe present thesis examines the meeting between the artistic and the pedagogical dimensions in the work of teachers. The main aim is to describe the learning in practice, emerging from a collective creative process. The point of departure is teachers' experience of a musical-production as part of the pedagogical work in school. Research questions are: 1) What are the implications of being a teach

A new method for isolating physiologically active Mg-protoporphyrin

Mg-protoporphyrin monomethyl ester (MPE) is a biosynthetic intermediate of chlorophyll and converted by MPE cyclase to protochlorophyllide. Limited availability of MPE has so far hampered cyclase research. In a new, simplified, method MPE was prepared from freeze dried bchE mutant Rhodobacter capsulatus DB575 cells by extraction with acetone/H2O/25% NH3. Isolated MPE was identified by absorption a

Platelet-derived growth factor receptors expressed in response to injury of differentiated vascular smooth muscle in vitro: effects on Ca2+ and growth signals

Vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) in the intact vascular wall are differentiated for contraction, whereas the response to vascular injury involves transition towards a synthetic phenotype, with increased tendency for proliferation. Platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) is thought to be important for this process. We investigated expression and functional coupling of PDGF receptors (PDGFRs) alph

DAK, a new low-incidence antigen in the Rh blood group system

BACKGROUND: Some low-incidence antigens in the Rh blood group system (e.g., VS, Rh32, FPTT) are expressed by more than one Rh complex. We describe a new low-incidence antigen that is present on RBCs with the partial D phenotypes, DIIIa or DOL, on RN RBCs and on one example of STEM+S RBCs. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Standard hemagglutination testing was performed with two sera that agglutinated DIII

Strategisk förändring, makt och kunskap : om disciplinering och motstånd i tidningsföretag

Popular Abstract in Swedish Studien beskriver och analyserar strategisk förändring i tre svenska tidningsföretag. I studien beskrivs hur företagen utvecklades från enaffärs-verksamheter till multiaffärs-verksamheter. Studien pekar på hur denna utveckling framförallt ska ses som resultat av etableringen och spridningen av en ny kunskapsformation. Ett centralt innehåll i den kunskapsformationen var The dissertation examines power and knowledge in strategic changes. It is a study of changes in three Swedish newspaper companies which developed from single-business to multi-business corporations. It is suggested that this transformation was based upon the establishment and reproduction of a new knowledge formation. This knowledge was the knowledge of strategy, particularly the classical perspec

Effects of total parenteral nutrition on lipid metabolism in rats

BACKGROUND: The pathophysiologic mechanisms behind the development of liver steatosis during total parenteral nutrition (TPN) and the possible relationship to alterations of lipoprotein lipase activities in different tissues are not fully known. It is also unknown whether continuous and discontinuous administration of TPN affect lipid metabolism differently. METHODS: TPN, including 8.4 g of trigly

Numerical simulation of Camassa-Holm peakons by adaptive upwinding

The Camassa-Holm equation is a conservation law with a non-local flux that models shallow water waves and features soliton solutions with a corner at their crests, so-called peakons. In the present paper a finite-volume method is developed to simulate the dynamics of peakons. This conservative scheme is adaptive, high resolution and stable without any explicit introduction of artificial viscosity.

Interobserver agreement in the results of Doppler examinations of extrauterine pelvic tumors

The aim of this study was to evaluate interobserver agreement in the results of Doppler measurements of peak systolic velocity (PSV), time-averaged maximum velocity (TAMXV) and the color content of tumor scans in extrauterine pelvic tumors. The results of transvaginal color and spectral Doppler examinations of 66 extrauterine pelvic masses obtained by two observers experienced in ultrasonography w

Nonthermal GSM microwaves affect chromatin conformation in human lymphocytes similar to heat shock

Here we investigated whether microwaves (MWs) of Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) induce changes in chromatin conformation in human lymphocytes. Effects of MWs were studied at different frequencies in the range of 895-915 MHz in experiments with lymphocytes from seven healthy persons. Exposure was performed in transverse electromagnetic transmission line cell (TEM-cell) using a GSM tes

Nurse-led heart failure clinics improve survival and self-care behaviour in patients with heart failure - Results from a prospective, randomised trial

Aim The aim of this trial was to prospectively evaluate the effect of follow-up at a nurse-led heart failure clinic on mortality, morbidity and self-care behaviour for patients hospitalised due to heart failure for 12 months after discharge. Methods A total of 106 patients were randomly assigned to either follow-up at a nurse-led heart failure clinic or to usual care. The nurse-led heart failure c

On the complexity of some cryptographic problems based on the general decoding problem

A new probabilistic algorithm for decoding one received word from a set of many given received words, into a codeword such that the Hamming distance between the received word and the codeword is at most t, is proposed. The new algorithm is applicable to several cryptographic problems, such as the Stern identification scheme, the McEliece public-key cryptosystem, and in correlation attacks on strea
