Social environments and interpersonal distance regulation in psychosis : A virtual reality study

Background: Experimentally studying the influence of social environments on mental health and behavior is challenging, as social context is difficult to standardize in laboratory settings. Virtual Reality (VR) enables studying social interaction in terms of interpersonal distance in a more ecologically valid manner. Regulation of interpersonal distance may be abnormal in patients with psychotic di

Longitudinal clinical and functional outcome in distinct cognitive subgroups of first-episode psychosis : A cluster analysis

Background Cognitive deficits may be characteristic for only a subgroup of first-episode psychosis (FEP) and the link with clinical and functional outcomes is less profound than previously thought. This study aimed to identify cognitive subgroups in a large sample of FEP using a clustering approach with healthy controls as a reference group, subsequently linking cognitive subgroups to clinical and

Exploring the role of clinical and demographic characteristics on the effects of virtual reality cognitive behavioral therapy for psychosis : A moderator analysis

Background: Virtual Reality cognitive behavioral therapy (VR-CBT) has proven to be an effective treatment method for paranoia and anxiety in psychosis. However, it is unknown, which individuals benefit most from VR-CBT. Previous studies examined factors affecting the treatment effect of regular CBTp, including illness duration, paranoia, depression, and pre-therapy avoidance behaviors, but results

Dynamic Interactive Social Cognition Training in Virtual Reality (DiSCoVR) versus Virtual Reality Relaxation (VRelax) for People with a Psychotic Disorder : A Single-Blind Multicenter Randomized Controlled Trial

Background and Hypothesis: Social cognition training (SCT), an intervention for social cognition and social functioning, might be improved by using virtual reality (VR), because VR may offer better opportunities to practice in a potentially more realistic environment. To date, no controlled studies have investigated VR-SCT. This study investigated a VR-SCT, "DiSCoVR". We hypothesized that DiSCoVR

Virtual Reality Aggression Prevention Training for People with Mild Intellectual Disabilities : A Feasibility Study

Introduction: Problems with adequately regulating aggression are comon in people with mild to borderline intellectual disabilities (MBID). Learning through experience has been shown to be effective in MBID. Therefore, we adapted an aggression prevention training that uses virtual reality (VR), which was initially made for a forensic psychiatric population. We aimed to assess the feasibility of thi

To continue or not to continue? Antipsychotic medication maintenance versus dose-reduction/discontinuation in first episode psychosis : HAMLETT, a pragmatic multicenter single-blind randomized controlled trial

Background: Antipsychotic medication is effective for symptomatic treatment in schizophrenia-spectrum disorders. After symptom remission, continuation of antipsychotic treatment is associated with lower relapse rates and lower symptom severity compared to dose reduction/discontinuation. Therefore, most guidelines recommend continuation of treatment with antipsychotic medication for at least 1 year

Medication strategies in first episode psychosis patients : A survey among psychiatrists

Aim: There is an ongoing debate regarding the optimal timing of discontinuation of antipsychotic drugs for patients with first episode psychosis. Although most guidelines recommend maintenance therapy for at least 1 or 2 years after reaching remission, study results indicate that early discontinuation may be beneficial for at least a subsample of patients. To date, little is known about which medi

Rescaling : Change agency and the emerging geography of economic relationships

In this paper, we propose a theoretical and conceptual framework for articulating and studying changes in the global economic landscape and illustrate this framework in the current context. The framework pivots around the notion of rescaling, which is interpreted from a human agency perspective. We disentangle three theoretically distinct dimensions of rescaling and show how they play together usi

Asthma and allergy trajectories in children based on combined parental report and register data

Background: Trajectories of asthma and allergy in children are heterogeneous and commonly derived from parental report of disease or clinical records. This study combined parental-reported and register-based dispensed medication data to characterize childhood trajectories of co-existing asthma, allergic rhinitis, and eczema. Methods: From a Swedish population-based birth cohort (N = 5654), survey

The Effect of Military Base Closures on Young Adults

This study examines the response among young adults to the closure of a large local employer. By using military base closures in Sweden, I find that men experience lower earnings and enroll in tertiary education. This is driven by low-ability men who choose shortterm enrollment at nearby colleges and universities. For women, the closures have a positive impact after some years, with increases in b

Revisiting the breadwinner norm : Replicating Bertrand, Kamenica, and Pan (2015)

I perform a narrow and wide replication of the labor force participation analyses in Bertand,Pan, and Kamenica (2015), which finds a negative relationship between realized and predicted female breadwinning and wives’ labor force participation. Their results replicate in a narrow sense, even when samples from the same data sources cannot be perfectly reproduced. In the broader replication, I test w

Interactions of intrinsically disordered peptides with phospholipid bilayers

The main goal of this thesis has been to investigate the interaction of the intrinsically disordered peptide Histatin 5 (Hst5), with phospholipid bilayers, using a mixture of experimental and computational techniques, such as, small- angle X-ray scattering, circular dichroism, neutron reflectometry, quartz-crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring, atomistic molecular dynamics simulations, The main goal of this thesis has been to investigate the interaction of the intrinsically disordered peptide Histatin 5 (Hst5), with phospholipid bilayers, using a mixture of experimental and computational techniques, such as, small- angle X-ray scattering, circular dichroism, neutron reflectometry, quartz-crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring, atomistic molecular dynamics simulations,

Policy amnesia and the promise of housing cooperatives : Finnish housing cooperativism from 1920 to 2020

Finland seems to suffer from a kind of ‘policy amnesia’ when it comes to the topic of housing cooperatives. Tracing back from 1920 to 2020, this article analyses waves of experimentation and political debate with housing cooperativism across both housing production and consumption. Supplementing a document analysis with expert interviews, it investigates which cooperatively-organized modes of hous

Lignin-Based Electrolytes for Aqueous Redox Flow Batteries

Lignin is one of the most naturally occurring biopolymers on Earth and exists in a relatively large portion of the residual stream of the pulp and paper industry. Technical lignin is water-soluble, nontoxic, and rich in quinone-type groups; therefore, it could be a potential redox species for next-generation aqueous redox flow batteries (RFBs). Despite having attractive features, lignin does not s
