Dispersal, inbreeding and fitness in natural populations

Organismer som lever i sådana uppsplittrade miljöer kommer att vara isolerade från varandra, vilket får som följdTo evaluate how inbreeding affects the viability of small populations, it is crucial to determine what constitutes a population (i.e., the number of breeders in local patches and the degree of dispersal), and also to estimate the reproductive consequences of philopatry and emigration. In this thesis, I concentrate on dispersal, inbreeding and fitness in natural populations. I consider dispersal ra

The Staff’s View on Dementia and the Care in three Cultures – a Qualitative Study in France, Portugal and Sweden

Abstract in UndeterminedThis article discusses the staff’s view on dementia and its impact on the care delivered arising outof a qualitative comparative study focusing on long-term care of older people in France, Portugaland Sweden. The aim was to explore the staff’s view on the illness dementia; on older peoplesuffering from dementia; the care provided and the impact of various views on the care.

A Brief Overview of Some Methods and Approaches for Investigating Interdependencies in Critical Infrastructures

This chapter presents methods for analysing interdependencies in critical infrastructures. In general, there are three groups of methods for analysing interdependencies; (1) conceptual, (2) model and simulation and (3) empirical and knowledge-based approaches. Examples of methods belonging to these groups are presented. The latter part of the chapter discusses challenges related to modelling, focu

The identification of step-atoms by high resolution core level spectroscopy

We have studied the vicinal Rh(553) surface by the use of High Resolution Core Level Spectroscopy (HRCLS). We demonstrate that we are able to resolve the photo-emitted electrons from the Rh3d5/2 level originating from the step atoms with respect to those emitted from the atoms in the (111) terrace. Our study therefore shows that it is possible to obtain a core level "fingerprint" from the step ato

SYSTEMIC EVALUATION TO ENHANCE THE QUALITY OF E-LEARNING COURSEWARE: THE EXAMPLE OF EPPROBATE

This paper deals with the quality aspects of e-learning courseware as seen by different quality stakeholders. In 2011, researchers and practitioners from more than 12 countries joined an initiative called “epprobate” with the aim of building a consensus on how to create a quality label and related consultative services for those who wish to enhance the educational value of their e-learning coursew

Recent aging studies for the ATLAS transition radiation tracker

The transition radiation tracker (TRT) is one of the three subsystems of the inner detector of the ATLAS experiment. It is designed to operate for 10 yr at the LHC, with integrated charges of /spl sim/10 C/cm of wire and radiation doses of about 10 Mrad and 2/spl times/10/sup 14/ neutrons/cm/sup 2/. These doses translate into unprecedented ionization currents and integrated charges for a large-sca

Hox transcription factors in hematopoiesis

Hematopoiesis is a lifelong, dynamic process in which a small number of pluripotent hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) residing in the bone marrow (BM) give rise to billions of mature blood cells of both myeloid and lymphoid origin each day. This enormous capacity of HSC has been utilized in BM transplantations for 4 decades and is also very important for future gene therapy. Understanding what molecu
