Management of symptomatic sacral perineural cysts with microsurgery and a vascularized fasciocutaneous flap

Background: The optimal treatment of symptomatic perineural (Tarlov) cysts is controversial. Numerous surgical techniques have been proposed with conflicting results. A series of Tarlov cysts treated with a novel surgical approach is presented. Methods: Patients with surgically treated symptomatic perineural cysts during 2013-2016 were included. The main indications for surgery were persistent radi

Intracranial pressure elevations in diffuse axonal injury : association with nonhemorrhagic MR lesions in central mesencephalic structures

OBJECTIVEIncreased intracranial pressure (ICP) in patients with severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) with diffuse axonal injury (DAI) is not well defined. This study investigated the occurrence of increased ICP and whether clinical factors and lesion localization on MRI were associated with increased ICP in patients with DAI.METHODSFifty-two patients with severe TBI (median age 24 years, range 9-61

Levelling Vagueness: A study of cultural diversity in an international project group

Imagine one Brit, one Dutch, two North Americans, one Spaniard and three Swedes setting up a joint international research project. Their areas of expertise vary: sociology, labour law and organisational theory. The scene is taking place in a hotel conference room in Uppsala. The North Americans are tired from the long trip and the jet-lag. The Spaniard arrived later than everybody, including himse

Heme detoxification by heme oxygenase-1 reinstates proliferative and immune balances upon genotoxic tissue injury

Phenotypic changes of myeloid cells are critical to the regulation of premature aging, development of cancer, and responses to infection. Heme metabolism has a fundamental role in the regulation of myeloid cell function and activity. Here, we show that deletion of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), an enzyme that removes heme, results in an impaired DNA damage response (DDR), reduced cell proliferation, and

Shared heritability and functional enrichment across six solid cancers

Quantifying the genetic correlation between cancers can provide important insights into the mechanisms driving cancer etiology. Using genome-wide association study summary statistics across six cancer types based on a total of 296,215 cases and 301,319 controls of European ancestry, here we estimate the pair-wise genetic correlations between breast, colorectal, head/neck, lung, ovary and prostate

Effect of a lifestyle-focused electronic patient support application for improving risk factor management, self-rated health, and prognosis in post-myocardial infarction patients : study protocol for a multi-center randomized controlled trial

BACKGROUND: Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) programs addressing risk factor management, educational interventions, and exercise contribute to reduce mortality after myocardial infarction (MI). However, the fulfillment of guideline-recommended CR targets is currently unsatisfactory. eHealth, i.e., the use of electronic communication for healthcare, including the use of mobile smartphone applications co

The factors affecting a native obligate parasite, Cuscuta australis, in selecting an exotic weed, Humulus scandens, as its host

In weed management, using native parasites to control exotic weeds is considered a better alternative than classical biological control. But the risk must be assessed because of the potential damage caused by these agents. We conducted this project to investigate the mechanism driving the choice of a native obligate parasite, Cuscuta australis, between the exotic, Humulus scandens, and native plan

Bilateralt bortfall av horisontell vestibulo-okulär reflex - Ett tidigt och specifikt kliniskt tecken vid Wernickes encefalopati

Wernicke encephalopathy is a condition in which thiamine deficiency causes cognitive dysfunction, ataxia and eye motor abnormalities. The condition is potentially reversible if treated with high doses of intravenous thiamine (vitamin B1). The video head impulse test, in which the vestibulo-ocular reflex is tested, can reveal an early specific sign of selective dysfunction in the medial vestibular

pKa Determination of a Histidine Residue in a Short Peptide Using Raman Spectroscopy

Determining the pKa of key functional groups is critical to understanding the pH-dependent behavior of biological proteins and peptide-based biomaterials. Traditionally, ¹H NMR spectroscopy has been used to determine the pKa of amino acids; however, for larger molecules and aggregating systems, this method can be practically impossible. Previous studies concluded that the C-D stretches in Raman ar

Investigating the mechanical characteristics of bone-metal implant interface using in situ synchrotron tomographic imaging

Long-term stability of endosseous implants depends on successful bone formation, ingrowth and adaptation to the implant. Specifically, it will define the mechanical properties of the newly formed bone-implant interface. 3D imaging during mechanical loading tests (in situ loading) can improve the understanding of the local processes leading to bone damage and failure. In this study, titanium screws

Dynamic modelling of weathering rates - The benefit over steady-state modelling

Weathering rates are of considerable importance in estimating the acidification sensitivity and recovery capacity of soil and are thus important in the assessment of the sustainability of forestry in a time of changing climate and growing demands for forestry products. In this study, we modelled rates of weathering in mineral soil at two forested sites in southern Sweden included in a monitoring n

First commissioning results of phase i insertion devices at MAX IV Laboratory

An overview of the insertion devices (ID) activities at MAX IV Laboratory will be presented. This paper describes the current status of the MAX IV insertion devices and the first commissioning results of some of the first 12 IDs installed at the three accelerators in MAX IV laboratory. The IDs are two Elliptically Polarizing Undulators (EPU), two In-Vacuum Undulators (IVU) and one In-vacuum wiggle

Two layers of modal grounding of recommendations

This article centres on the modal properties of recommendations. Using data from the genre of wine tasting notes, it argues that a recommendation is understood in relation to its role in the social and discursive practice in which it occurs. Recommendations are profiled against two layers of modal grounding in the communicative situation. At the discourse level, recommendations express a weakly de
